I've used an electric B & D trimmer for years. It's been a workhorse but I no longer am, and wanted to make my job easier. kzbin.infoUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG Around the corners, the small side yard etc. was a pain to run the cord out to, so I bought this thinking I'd use it for touch-ups and hard to reach places. Well, I haven't used the corded one since!This is so light weight and so much easier. It has all the power I need because I start wearing down after about 20 minutes and I haven't run out of battery yet. It takes about two hours to charge. I've used it about twice a week for a month and still have line left too. My favorite feature is the blade inside the shield that keeps the line trim to where I don't even have to think about it. You can see from my pic that it's been heavily used and I probably should clean it more often. Very happy with it.

Thank you Stihl GB for your comments, I fully understand what you are saying, it just doesn’t happen this way when you are trying to earn a living. In an ideal world a platform is very useful if on flat ground, utterly useless on a hill. I will however add to the beginners, I fell off the bottom rung of a normal ladder years ago and was out of action for days. Ps:Stihl machines are the best you can get and that’s all i use.

Yes I too love STIHL machines and I also like my tripod ladders to get a better view of the top ... after 25 years my arms and shoulders creak a bit now 😊

I only ever use the long reach when necessary, get up a ladder or a tower & get that top sharp as you can. And unless you have a van load of batteries, petrol is king, I get an hour of cutting with my Husky 535LK and probably an hour & a half with my Stihl hand held!

i have the sthil HLA 86 ; with the AP 300 battery ... damn it's really impressive, and the battery last ... like 3 hours of continous running time ... with the fast charge it charge really fast the battery, during the time i clean the yard, the battery is almost finished

I thought about reaching up to the top of the hedge with my hedge trimmer and pulling it along, but I made too many mistakes and my work slowed down. However, I can cut the side of the hedge very well with it. Most tall hedges are also too wide, so two cutting strips are not enough to cut the top of the hedge.

I’m a professional gardener by trade and always use a tripod ladder, you need to see the top to get it flat and how you supposed to do the top bit that you can’t see?!? Very misleading!

Hi Johnny, we accept that the tripod ladders are much more stable than a conventional ladder and that a ladder to reach the top of the hedge is convenient. However, for safety reasons we would still recommend that a platform is used as the long hedge trimmer could make someone lose their balance, which, when up a ladder, could cause serious injury. If a professional such as yourself is using a ladder it would be down to them to take this into account on their own risk assessment. Thanks, STIHL GB

Vibration exposure wise, how long does Stihl recommending using the long reach hedge trimmer for?

Hi, thanks for your comment. This depends on which model of long-reach hedge trimmer you have. Battery-powered hedge trimmers will have much lower vibrations than petrol ones, for example. We have a whole section on vibration exposure on our website here: www.stihl.co.uk/en/support-and-contacts/safety/directives-declarations-standards/vibration-directive It includes a useful vibration calculator as well, where you can enter the vibration values of the machine or machines you are using and it will advise you the maximum duration you should be using it for.
