Thanks so much for releasing these, despite the stressors and pressures in your day to day. I'm relatively new to Dwarf Fortress, but thanks to your tutorials I've managed to make a fortress of 210 dwarves, all of which are neutral happiness or above, with relatively few deaths. I got several friends of mine into the game when it went on sale on Steam, and I'm so excited to see the game continue to develop beyond what I'm already enthralled by. Thanks for these videos, especially, for allowing me to feel like a part of the Dwarf Fortress community proper. Take care and be well!

Making magic material-based is a very good idea. The biggest problem with balancing magic in a game like Dwarf Fortress is that DF's engagement comes from navigating its complex systems, and magic of the "abracadabra" variety is NOT complex. A wizard waving their hand to make things happen isn't engaging, and risks optimizing the fun out of the game. But magic substances and materials? Spellbooks written in demon blood and bound with unicorn leather? THAT'S complex! It'd also be a great way to expand the mid/late game, so we have rare/dangerous materials to look for, akin to adamantine. Plus I've always been an advocate for DF to do more to make certain dwarves stand out as important characters within the fort (the current noble system needs an overhaul), and appointing a fort wizard sounds like a great way to do that!

i cant wait to be 60 and a geriatric Tarn pushes the magic 1.0 update out, ill be happy in the old folks home when a war breaks out in my tavern and spells start flying all over the room

It's always super interesting to hear these, both for Tarn's insights of course, but also to see what things the community/question askers felt important enough to ask the dev directly which just... never would have occurred to me to think about as an issue or priority in a million years, lmao. Thanks as always Blind!

I really want to see some kind of political system with DF. Specifically with religious leaders, appointed officials, nobles, and even random dwarves creating factions and movements within your fortress. Instead of just banning random items from trade, I want nobles to blame political rivals for tragedies, and influence their supporters by giving them 'needs' like 'join the military,' or 'start a fight.' Imagine if next time you had too many upset dwarves, it triggered a fort-wide civil war? Or if your appointed military commander could attempt to kill the king and usurp the throne? Besides all the new complications it would add to late-game forts, it would ALSO give players characters to focus on and root for.

I'm not sure I feel better informed by this new "pile" system over the previous "arc" system. 🤣 I suspect whatever Tarn actually works on will evolve and change as always.

Hopefully the piles are more frequent then the arcs. /shrug

An influx of people with the "future of the fortress" updates can hit the servers badly. Not sure if that's the reason, exactly, but the game was always based around a smaller community before. The servers definitely never had to handle so many as they do now.

Will there be steam deck controls?

My understanding is that it's currently very playable in Fortress Mode and I know Tarn's working with someone on Steam Deck controls schemes for Adventure.

Game really needs basic fixes to some 10-15 year old bugs. There is enough content - I could live without it, but bugs are everyday nuisances. I am forced to use DFHack everyday to get a working fortress. I really hope devs would stop doing new content for half a year and just fix bugs in basic functionality. For example, they could stop my wells being 'bucket full' after a dwarf has used it. I known fixing bugs is certainly more boring that doing magic and stuff. But think about it this way: when a magic expansion come along, it would certainly have many bugs. And some of those bugs can sit around for another decade as bugs before it.
