This non-G-Shock casio do have one advantage over other non-G-Shock casios and that is they use mineral glass instead of those easily scratched resin glass. It might even be the cheapest Casio to have a mineral glass.

I have it and it's built like a tank. amazing value in my opinion. I have it for 4 months and no scratch whatsoever, even after accidentally bang it against steel doorframe and countless of time bang it against wood doorframes.

@@Antek_S The 80's in general at least in Pop culture have NEVER BEEN TOPPED and especially the 80's AWESOME Music across all styles and genres. It was definitely a very Special time for unforgettable Movies even though the 90's and 2000's gave us some great movies too. The 80's are a decade that is still highly unique which doesn't tend to blend into other decades like others do; the 80's still stand out very distinctly from all others in a colorfully delightful way. I was extremely fortunate to have been a pre-teen kid in the 80's since the 90's in comparison pretty much "sucked" majorly!

Couldn't disagree more I think it's a big brash retro beauty, I changed the strap out on mine for a metal buckle one and now it feels like a tank. The quality at this price is awesome, super legible at any angle with that big face and flush bezel and a big chunk of mineral crystal sets it apart from most other Casio's at this price. I consider it an instant classic and my new favourite watch, thank you Casio!

I bought this originally for my kiddo, but have found myself "borrowing" it and wearing it myself. It's huge, clunky, very plastic but VERY Casio. I set the thing up and found it to be oddly charming. I wear it for yard work and car work and all the rest - and I don't get all worried if I have to take it off and throw it on the work bench. Eventually I'll pick up a Duro and once I find the right G-Shock I'll get one of those too - but until then, this little ugly duckling continues to be a welcome addition to my rotation. Handsome? In it's own quirky way. Charming? Buckets.

If that's the case you may want to look at the W-96H-1AVES or W-800H-1AVES. Much better looking, and far easier to read IMHO. You can pick up the former for £9.99 in the UK at the moment!

Right, I don't even have any issue with my sight but I don't want a large watch with a small negative display like every other g-shock. I have one of these and am pretty happy with it, after I get tired of it I might upgrade to a pro trek prw30 with the massive STN display, but those are $150+ so it'll be a while.

Now, THAT is one awesome looking Casio! I especially love the way the buttons protrude powerfully and robot-like from the case. The metal facing gives it a brutalist look while the dark grayish surround to the display contrasts nicely with the resin. Tough choice between this one and the super-sweet Mission Impossible watch!

I agree. Especially in the winter time. If you work outdoors, it's cold, and you're wearing gloves, that's when you will really appreciate those big buttons, meaning you won't need to remove a glove in order to access a feature on the watch 🤔

Say what you will about this thing, but this seems like the perfect watch for my dad. He doesn't care much for aesthetics, sleeps with his watch on so he could use that 3 sec light time, swims during the summer months, complains about how hard the buttons are to press on his current watch (a g-shock GBD800-1), and could stand to benefit from the easy to read display. I've been meaning to get him a new one since I recommended the GBD800 in the first place.

Oh Jody ! I just received this same watch in the mail yesterday! I love it. Comfortable, solidly made with clear, easy to read numerals, I think its beautiful! I have display cases filled with beautiful gold and steel timepieces, but this is simplistic, easy to use and wear anywhere watch that has a ton of charm. Oh well, Tastes differ. I dont like the Cadisons you rave about all the time. :)

I think those pushIers are meant to resemble shocks, with the circles being the "cushioning" element. I have to say I have a warm spot in my heart for digital watches that look like that because I grew up wearing them. I don't buy them these days, but the videos always make me nostalgic. :)

We’ll have to agree to disagree on this one Jody. I love the look of this one. The gold-ish tinted digital display catches the eye & the arabics are easy on my 62 year old eyes. And I dig the black & gold color scheme with a splash of red thrown in. Straightforward pushers & a familiar settings functionality make this beast easy to set. And I like that I can extend the illumination to 3 seconds, even if that eats a bit more power. Proportionately this works for me & I like how straightforward it is. I’m with you on 99% of your reviews mate…just not this one. Keep ‘em coming Jody!

I just purchased one of these from Argos in their sale £19.99. Lovely watch for that price and I am just going to wear it until it stops. Being a bit of a snorkel diver it was the 200m water resistance that did it for me. Not that I will be going down anywhere near as deep as that. More like 20ft lol.

The angular "antenna" pushers were originally designed into the DW-290 so that you could easily find and use them while diving, especially if you were wearing gloves.

Hello, I'm wearing this watch 3 years now, i think it is very unique and very well designed ( big buttons for big fingers, all of them looks like fpv googles antennas or some submarine equipment, nice thick strap, fine look with the red frame over the dials and the screw mounted frame around) very, very durable, no matter if it is not a g-shock, it has a mineral glass (which i hit a lot and it does not break, just minor scratches). As i said before, easy to operate, tough and so, so cheap.

This one looks pretty suitable to wear outside of a waterproof jacket, and operate with thick glove. I live in Canada and occasionally I need to work on boat, or top of a pole where it is either dark or very windy cold and wet. This ugly thing looks quite perfect coz you don't need to worry too much about it. The big buttons are easier to press than the 5600. It might look a bit ugly as a vacation watch, but I think it looks quite suitable for a outdoor field watch.

Enjoyed your review of this super cool Casio! Totally get it. Your criticisms are very valid. However, it does at least have mineral glass vs acrylic. And it is, in the gray LCD variant, one of the most readable Casios available. When you step back at Wal-mart and look at all the Casio's, the DW291 sticks out as being far more readable than the rest. Somehow this Casio appeals to me anyway even though I know it is ugly. That is why I love Casios. Check out the AE-1500WH-5AVCF or one of its variants. May be a little big but some will love this one.

I love my grey bezel black dial DW-291H. You forgot to mention that you can change the time of the four home screen time zones, it’s not just NYC, PAR, and LON. It’s any time zone you set. You can set it by holding adjust on any of the three extra time zones.

I received my Signum cuda no date burnt meteorite dial yesterday and I'm chuffed to bits with it, the way the light shows the different colours and reflects off the striations within the meteorite when the watch is turned in different angles is amazing, I'm so glad that I chose not to have a date window on the burnt meteorite, it's a very chunky watch but not overly big for my 6 3/4 wrist, thanks for reviewing the watch, even my teenage son who is very much one of those "Meh" kind of kids is impressed by it

I've been enjoying my recently acquired dw290 quite a bit. I like the rugged, future-post-apocalytpic-T2 aesthetic. I love the asymmetric shape, helping to differentiate from every other Casio. I think this new one is not as attractive, though.

I had 5600e and now I have the dw291. I wouldn’t go back. This watch much more sexier! Not ugly at all! Not chunky whatsoever unless you really have small hands or wrist. It is just the perfect size for any type of watch. It’s does not feel CHEAP in anyway. From the buttons, to the screen even the strap. Feels like this watch is gonna last me forever. And am a proud owner. Anyone who don’t want theirs please let me know!

Got one on sale and it works great if you ride a motorbike, nice big display and buttons work with gloves on. Once again will go on the handlebars with a bit of foam pipe insulation underneath as a cheap bike clock.

I'm 6'7" with an 8.6 inch wrist. It's hard to find watches that wear big enough. It's bulk, for me is a feature, not a bug. I think the DW291 looks great. That being said, my next Casio is probably going to be another AE1200 variant. It's one of my favorite looking digital watches.

I have the one with the silver bezel on top. To me , it’s a winner. I’ve had it for over a year and works great. I like your show but I’m going to have to disagree with you on the looks. I think it’s a rugged looking and had lots of compliments on it. It is a watch for people who have 7” or bigger wrists. Mine are 8” wrist it sits on and is well proportioned. I can also wear a Mud master g shock and that’s a chunky watch.
