After looking up a video of how to beat Redeemer, it actually seems like a pretty idea for boss presentation. It just fails at communicating what it wants you to do, partly because of the sheer number of options you seem to have.

Last I heard the Spawn reboot movie was still trying to secure funding, and if Blumhouse can’t make it happen (they’ve been attached to the project since like 2018) McFarlane says he’ll look outside the Hollywood system to finance it independently. In other words, there’s a maybe 60% chance of a new Spawn movie ever getting made and the chances of it being any good are even worse.

Oddly enough this game was my introduction to Spawn as a kid so I have a soft spot for it. I replayed it recently too and it's crazy that even though Redeemer is an early boss fight it was like the second hardest fight in the game for me.

PSA: you just need to stay back, deflect the objects he throws at you, when he starts charging the beam do not jump right away, instead wait until it starts expanding. When he has his back to the wall a single blast or power punch will send him off. Then after that you fight on the ground and just need to blast his ass. I think it's not that hard, but very trial and error.

The unassuming green straight is the best special move, as it wrecks most bosses for a relatively modest cost. I think there was also a homing projectile a bit like Summon Spirit from Symphony of the Night that can be used take out some awkwardly placed foes. I do like this game, it's bit like Werewolf: The Last Warrior in that it will seem pretty difficult and awkward at first, but becomes a lot more enjoyable once you figure out the some of the more exploitable mechanics. This game has also pretty cool and somewhat creepy post credit scene. It's definitely worth checking out.

A lot of 2D games from the 90s and late 80s were like that, extremely hard the first time you play them, but every section required practiced until you learn and can breeze through. One game that comes to mind is the snes X-men capcom game. The levels can be brutal if you don't know what you are doing and you will fail over and over.

I am also going with "Never", since McFarlane has been trying to get another Spawn film off the ground since the first live action film back in 1997 came out. It still surprises me that another film hasn't emerged since then though, considering that at the time, it did pretty well at the box office.

Mr. Q and Mau Herrera made an "Ultimate Double Dragon" using OpenBOR and the recent characters put in are this Spawn and Shaq from Shaq Fu. I'd highly recommend looking into Ultimate Double Dragon; it is mad fun but it takes skill to play as there are a ton of combo routes and cool nods to other fighting games and beat em ups, even Wrestlemania the Arcade Game.

The trick with the Redeemer beam is you just jump very late then float, then hit him. The beam can't hit you until late into the animation.

It's probably because he needs some sort of standard lifebar, cuz it's a video game. In the comics, unless you were some super powerful demon/angel, regular enemies like punks/gunfire, etc, wouldn't do much to him. He'd just heal? Wouldn't really fly in a game.

I'm picturing something in the vein of The Punisher arcade game where player 2 played as Nick Fury? That's a fantastic idea! Also, Matt you seem to be interested in obscure superhero games so I was wondering if you were familiar with OpenBOR engine (Open Beats of Rage)? I know you know about MUGEN, and OpenBOR is similar. It's a fan made platform for making games with a eye toward these 16-bit belt scrollers in the style of Streets of Rage and Final Fight. There's 2 games one based on Marvel (Marvel Infinite War) and one on DC (Justice League Infinite) that includes like 50+ superheroes from each universe. Very ambitious and very cool. And it's free!

And you think the creator of Spawn at least looked into other media projects to boost up his antihero or hero IP series involved a new game or animation or anime series. Spawn was featured in MK 11 (2019) as a DLC and the 90s HBO animation. Looking at Neflix's Castlevania, another Hellboy film (2025? Another Reboot?) the upcoming solo Marvel's Blade game (I think their rated is M) and their 2025 movie, the new Devil May Cry (Neflix Anime Series) and game like Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodline 2 (Fall 2024). And there's a rumour of Constantine 2 (DC Film). Come on, Todd!

The game has this awesome mechanic of your life and power being linked. The power level is used for both life and power, so if you spam specials you lose out on continues. I think it's really cool and a great alternative to a special using a chunk of his health.

Funnily enough Matt, your timing on this video is somewhat perfect. The issue in which Spawn kills Malebolgia was #100. Issue #350 just released, and Todd just finally wrapped up that plot point. And yes, you are correct, the story did get a little lackluster for a while after #100. The new thing that Todd's doing is a full fledged Spawn universe that revolves around many different Hell Spawns throughout history. I think this is due to there being no real Image shared universe, since Spawn, Savage Dragon, and (sometimes) Shadow Hawk are the only character who have reliably been around for the last 30+ years.

@@alex_-yz9tooh it was absolutely acknowledged, the entire multi-issue storyline leading up to issue 350 was about a war between the different factions of heaven and hell to decide who's gonna take the throne of hell and become malebolgia's successor, and it was heavily alluded to that hell had went through a protracted series of conflicts for the throne even before that. that period just didn't appear in the comics cause spawn was doing other stuff on earth.

For anyone who cares (and to justify my spending so much time on this in my younger days), after Spawn beats Redeemer, Angela arrives and explains the plot. An angel, the Mad One, has gone insane and decided to kill Malebogia using the innocence in children's souls as a weapon. To save the children's souls, Spawn needs to chase the Mad One into Hell using a heart of pure evil as his gateway (hence breaking into the asylum to find Billy Kincaid). The entire rest of the game is Spawn fighting through levels of Hell. The final boss is the Mad One.

Oh man, I remember convincing my parents to take the family to see the film when it released instead of George of the Jungle (everyone hated Spawn but me, and in hindsight I would have loved George but at least I saw that later). I do remember the comics advertising this game, thankfully I never played it because I would have hated how difficult it is (definitely needed a lot of improvements, especially the cheap environmental hazards and hidden enemies in Hell, you shouldn't be damaged by enemies hidden by the floor).

It’s already prime What Happened fodder. Todd McFarlane’s been trying to get a new movie made for the past 25 years, and even though Blumhouse has been attached for the past six or seven years apparently it’s still nowhere near entering production. In fairness there’s been major roadblocks in development like the pandemic and WGA/SAG strikes, but they didn’t even start working on a script until maybe a year ago because apparently McFarlane assumed “I have ideas for a new Spawn movie” would be enough to secure a $150 million budget.

I banged my head against this game a lot as a kid. As such, I'm familiar with how to get pretty far in the game with ease, and it is always weird to watch people play the game and have as hard of a time as this. A lot of people say the game is hard but I disagree (until you get to the last few levels). I think it's wonderfully designed for character control. Spawn has a ton of moves, and the specials done via fighting game style inputs? Fantastic, Once you understand your moveset and Spawn's movements. Running through this game kicking ass with a good flow is rewarding as all hell. Game gets brutal near the end and unless you're a master of the movrset it's very difficult to finish the game. Matt should have checked out the manual quickly for the moveset. There's healing, tracking missles in big and small variations, and the short power punch does a ridiculous amount of damage and is best used against the bosses. I think it's a well designed game. Do agree that a xyz axis beat em up would be really great.

I'm curious too why there's no new Spawn movie. I'm curious though if today's younger generation of consumers are familiar with Spawn at all both the comics, the older animated media and old movie. Would a new Spawn movie make as big an impact as the Marvel and DC movie franchises? I'm hoping for a new Spawn movie and also a new next gen Spawn game! It would look amazing if a Spawn game runs on Unreal Engine 5 with amazing graphics but retaining the comic book like style! I would like to see a more upgraded graphic version of Spawn Armageddon! Plus, there's some increased interest in horror - supernatural genres in their theme, characters arc and aesthetics from some fans and casual ones since the mid 2010s, 2022 to current from Stranger Things Season 4, Hulu's Hellraiser, Werewolf by Night (Marvel Special Presentation film for Halloween), (MCU) Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness, Wednesday (Neflix), Batman: Doom Come Into Gotham (DC Animation film), another Hellboy movie and DC's Swamp Thing (Reboot film), rumour of Constantine 2 and Evil Dead: Rise (film), the upcoming solo Marvel's Blade (game) included their film adaption for 2025 and Neflix's Devil May Cry (Based on the Capcom game series), Neflix's Castlevania and other games that Matt have mentioned alongside other YT from indies and established game studio.

Man, I owned this game when I was a kid. I don't remember getting far, but watching you play unlocked some memories. I know now I got further than you, but no idea how much. Also Redeemers eye beam, you gotta jump and glide pixel perfect to avoid damage. It was a bitch 😐

Say what you want about this game, but the pixel art is absolutely amazing. To me the fatal flaw is the level design that is entirely trial and error. Edit: Since the sprites have a lot of moves this version of Spawn has been "mugenized" pretty much since mugen exists.

I would disagree. I think In The Demon's Hand and Armageddon are better. But this is certainly superior to the GBC and PSX games.

If Todd would take a step back and just be a creative consultant then the movie would be alright. I dont think Mcfarlane is a particular talented writer. The guy knows two things toys, and marketing. Hes a creative guy who has interesting ideas for character designs but I dont feel his actual writing on Spawn was particularly great. Ive been a spawn fan since 97, and Ive read damn near every issue but the issues he wrote kind of had not much happening in them. With his major skills being in Toy design and marketing, Im afraid the movie could become a horror r rated version of Batman and Robin.

It would have helped if Spawn’s moves focused on being defensive and mobile than having so many weird special attacks. You do have a lot of energy and some moves *could* break certain bosses, but I guess fighting game mechanics were probably too new and not well understood to be experimented with back then.

There is no reason to even try to hit Redeemer during the auto-scroll sections. Just duck and jump to dodge the thrown mannequins in the auto scroll part. When you get to the end of the hallway, jump right at the end of Redeemer's chargeup and glide down to avoid the laser. Hit with a hard attack. Repeat.
