Cadillac's iconic full-size SUV has undergone a complete overhaul and we're going over everything you need to know on this 2021 Cadillac Escalade Sport Platinum 4WD.
PRN T-Shirts now available! Check out our original designs here: teespring.com/...
GM announced their new full-size SUVs about a year ago including this 2021 Cadillac Escalade Sport Platinum 4WD. A new generation means all new technology, although the 6.2L V8 engine should be familiar power numbers for those with the outgoing model. We go over all the mechanical changes with this generation Escalade along with the new Magnetic Ride Control with air ride suspension. We discuss the differences with this over the 2021 GMC Yukon Denali we just featured and why you'd be looking at paying a $38,000 premium over it for this Escalade.
Some of the updates for this Escalade include new front headlights, with full LED lighting throughout the vehicle, soft-close doors, 3ft tall LED tail lights, power liftgate, and new black design for the grille, window trim, and roof rails. We go over the design changes and what we like over the previous model.
We then jump on the inside to go over the plethora of features found on this Escalade, including the full leather interior, 36-Speaker AKG Reference Studio sound system, 3 OLED infotainment screens, 12.6" rear entertainment screens, panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, and much more. The differences over the GMC Yukon are staggering, and we try our best to go over everything buyers would want to know if they're in the market for the 2021 Cadillac Escalade Sport Platinum.
We then take the Escalade on a comprehensive winter road test to talk about how the 4WD system performs in the snow along with the Bridgestone Blizzak tires, and our real world fuel economy testing. We discuss the overall ride and drive of the Escalade and how you'll find it to live with from a luxury perspective, and how it compares to the BMW X7.

Beautiful truck. I know I’ve said this before but the prices of new full size SUVs and pickups are crazy. You may think this is expensive but a base Escalade starts at $76K USD compared to Limited F150 at $70K USD. Within the next 10 years both those vehicles will start around $100k USD

Great review, once again. Really appreciated your 2021 GMC Yukon Denali review as well. You are thorough, specific, and your being so personable doesn't hurt either. Well done. I do have a question for you that maybe you can answer here, or maybe some other poster might also add a comment here about. I have been weighing whether to get the 2021 GMC Yukon AT4 or Denali, or the very beautiful new 2021 Cadillac Escalade. The AT4 has the smaller wheels with more rubber (275/60/20), and that extra rubber is its big advantage I imagine on rougher roads, off road, or especially relevant to me, in winter driving, especially snowy, icy roads during the words snow storms (Best time to go skiing after all). The Denali and Escalade both come with the larger wheels and less rubber (275/50/22). Not sure if that wheel size should be a priority. What I am wondering about is a feature clearly marketed for the AT4 and Denali, the "Active Response 4WD System" which sends optimal torque to each of the 4 wheels as needed for improved traction. Everything else mechanically/electronically seems the same with the Escalade, except I can find no reference to this particular GMC feature, and I really like that feature. Though I won't be taking any of these suv's "Off roading" as they say, not any longer anyway at my 59 years, I do like having the versatility and confidence knowing I can handle whatever comes up. Do you know, or can you find out, if the Escalade has that exact same "Active Response 4WD System", maybe not by that name, but the same feature/capability? (In case it is relevant, I believe they all come with the 2 speed transfer case, and I have been told that as long as I order the Heavy Duty Trailering Package with the Escalade, they will add the electronic ltd slip differential and 4W Low option). I basically want the high end luxury of the loaded Escalade, but ideally would like to have the full capability to get anywhere anytime, good roads, poorer quality secondary roads, dirt roads (not off roading, just getting to the occasional camp site or favored fishing spot perhaps), and most importantly confident handling of severe winter driving conditions, snow, ice, deep snow, slush, you name it. Thanks for any help regarding this one feature in particular that you or anyone else cares to comment on.
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 3 жыл бұрын
I believe the 4WD system is slightly different with the GMC AT4, the way it was explained to me in GMC's press release make it seem like it is different mechanical hardware over the Escalade or non-AT4 Yukons, giving you a bit of extra control in rough conditions. I didn't have any issue with either one of these vehicles in our climate though, but perhaps the AT4 might be the way to go if you're looking for that extra peace of mind. As for the tire sizes, I agree that the smaller rim size with larger tire thickness is better overall for ride, control, and traction. Cadillac only offers the 22"s on the Escalade now, which look great but will get damaged so easily if you hit a pothole.

@@PRNTestDrive Thanks for the reply. I have that impression too. Still torn though, since I did get to test drive an AT4, and though very nice inside and out, and of course didn't come with all the Escalade extra luxuries, it wasn't bad, and had all the necessary basics. I did notice, however, on the AT4, it's leather seats seemed a bit thinner and firmer than the Danali, and even more so compared to the Escalade. Can't decide if that would make them uncomfortable on very long drives, or if comfortable but just not as much. If you have anything more to add on that, by all means please do, but either way, thanks for a great review, and for worthwhile follow up info.

@@PRNTestDrive An interesting comparison on your last point, about the Escalade 22's (which have the 50 sidewall instead of the 60 as in the AT4). I have also been considering a slightly smaller coupe style suv, the Audi SQ8, which despite weighing about 5600 lbs, roughly the same as the AT4, and not too much less than the Escalade around 6000/6200, it only comes with 40 or 45 sidewalls in its more luxury versions, which makes me think it might even be worse than the Escalade regarding your point about possible damage if you hit big pot holes. No question for you here, unless you wish to comment, just find that interesting. Maybe, though not ideal in rougher circumstances, the Escalade's 50 sidewall isn't that bad. (Note: The Audi is also an "all wheel drive" versus the AT4 and Cadillac's "4 wheel drive", and I appreciated your point about being able to use actual 4WH during worse weather and snow and slush on the roads, not to mention 4WL in specific situations, which comes standard on AT4 and optional with heavy duty towing package on Escalade; I am researching pro's and con's of AWD verses 4WD though, but am leaning towards the GM's 4WD for ski country and northern roads, and the occasional dirt road; can always uses Auto or 2WD in the off season, spring/summer/fall).

Back again. Have now seen a number of your various reviews. Good stuff. A follow up specific question. The Yukon Denali and AT4 both advertise having "Active Response 4 wheel drive", while the Escalade does not advertise having that. But since they are both GM, and the same base vehicle, do you know, does the Escalade have that same active response 4 wheel drive functionality/capability but perhaps just doesn't call it that due to being Cadillac and not GMC? And if not, might that cause the Escalade to not handle the bad snowstorms quite as well?
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 10 ай бұрын
Hey there, that's a good question that I don't think I'll have an answer for unfortunately. On the Yukon it's the Z6E package, Premium Capability Package, there doesn't appear to be anything on the Cadillac side that offers this, although it seems that the Active Response 4WD system include the air ride, 4WD, and eLSD, so perhaps since the Escalade already has those features, GMC markets it as an add-on whereas the Cadillac is just a standard setup.

That is my hope, but I would love to confirm it. I would like to buy a new Escalade Sport Platinum in late 2024, but am hesitating due to this issue. I might consider a Yukon Denali Ultimate if it just offered all black leather seats instead of the brown, and would be nice if it offered the Night Vision of the Escalade too. That night vision's abililty see exhaust heat in the cars and trucks infront of you in a major snowstorm when you're driving almost blind, and in severe fog, makes the Night Vision a lot more useful than just seeing Bigfoot while your car camping. @@PRNTestDrive

I have a follow up question or two, if you are able to: Just so you know, I watched this and your Yukon reviews multiple times and I get a little more out of them each time. Well done. As for my questions, they once again relate to functionality that might help in off roady or winter storm conditions: Do you know, does the Escalade (With the optional heavy duty towing package, that I am told adds the 4W Low option when you add it), does it come with the Traction Control and Hill Descent Assist that I see is on the cluster to the left of the steering wheel on the AT4 and Yukon Denali? Since I don't see it on the video image, maybe those are found somewhere else in the dash or in all that Escalade technology, or maybe they just remove those figuring people won't use the Escalade in those situations? (I just think it would be nice to have all the suv capabilities if ever needed, even if tuned down some for luxury). And lastly, since I am considering the Diesel option for the Escalade or Denali, do you have any experience with that or similar diesel engines in your climate (I live in ski country here in the US, out west), maybe how they compare pro or con to the 6.2 liter V8 perhaps at high mountain altitudes or sub freezing temperatures especially at morning start up, or despite the high torque kicking it an a lower 1500 rpm's, where the lower 277 hp might cause issues, such as maybe accelerating to pass on steep highway hills when already going 75 mph, or others? Thanks for any insight to the above questions you, or any posters here, can share. I really appreciate it.
@PRNTestDrive

This Escalade didn't have the same 4Low setting the Yukon AT4 had when we drove that. I'm not sure if adding a specific option/package adds it onto it, or if GM doesn't actually allow it on the Escalade. It's something I'd have to speak to my rep at GM about next time we drive the Escalade. We've driven a number of diesel engines, not as many as I'd like mind you. I haven't had any issues with cold climate with them, today's diesel technology is really good compared to cars/trucks from 20-30 years ago that needed to warm up significantly via the glow plugs. The last diesel I drove in the winter was the Mazda CX-5 Diesel, I left it outside one night to see how it would react and the vehicle started up immediately as if it were using petrol. We're hoping to get the chance to try out GM's diesel engine in their large SUVs, although we won't get our hands on it this season to test it in the snow.

@@PRNTestDrive Thanks for taking the time to reply. I will share below some of the answers I got direct from Cadillac earlier today. To summarize part of it, the Active Response 4WD System on the Yukons is NOT available on the Escalade. I am left wondering if any of its component parts referenced below are on the Escalade however. If you care to add more insight after reading the following great, though I would ask if you have any thoughts about the 3 liter i6 turbo diesel available on the Escalade, if with that much lower hp, if already going at highs speed say 70mph, if it can still accelerate nicely to pass someone going up steep hills like i80 turnpike here in Utah or i70 turnpike in Colorado? Here's a copy and paste of what they told me: Electronic limited-slip differential (eLSD) is available on the 2021 Escalade, offering more precise traction and power engagement for the rear wheels. Its infinitely variable clutch engagement delivers torque to the wheel with the most traction, including cornering and wet weather conditions. Premium Capability Package with Active Response 4WD is a package that is only available on the 2021 GMC Yukon models as this includes packages that are exlusive to the Yukon. Active Response 4WD combines multiple features designed to optimize performance while off-roading and in slippery conditions. Some of these features are automatic and others let you tune your vehicle’s mode in response to driving conditions. Below is a brief summary of Active Response 4WD features: • AutoTrac® 2-speed transfer case splits power between front and rear axles for increased traction depending on driving conditions • Traction Select System lets you choose between driving modes that offer enhanced traction, tighter steering and more • Electronic Stability Control/StabiliTrak® can automatically apply brake pressure to individual wheels and, if necessary, adjust propulsion torque when your vehicle detects it may not be following your intended path • Electronic Limited Slip Differential (eLSD) automatically sends optimal torque to each rear wheel, improving traction on both slippery and dry surfaces - If one of your rear tires is on ice and another is on asphalt, eLSD will tell each rear wheel to spin at different speeds for better traction. Use when road surface traction conditions are variable. When driving in AUTO, the front axle is engaged, and the vehicle's power is sent to the front and rear wheels automatically based on driving conditions. This setting provides slightly lower fuel economy than 2 m.

I keep coming back to your very good reviews, the 2021 Denali and Escalades especially (Not sure if you've done an AT4 review, but that would be great if you do at some point). I have another question: Assuming one used 4WD High and had the same quality say Blizzak snow tires on both, do you think the 2021 Escalade will drive as well and as reliably, confidently as the 2021 Denali on bad winter roads and during the worst snow/ice storms? Those are the best days to go skiing after all, and I want to be able to get anywhere anytime, to and from any ski area, be it ten minutes or ten hours away during a bad storm. I would just prefer to do that as luxuriously as possible, as long as not trading off capability. And, though not off roading per se, winter can wreak havoc on good roads and make generally less well maintained secondary roads damaged and pretty darn rough. I am a little concerned that for the sake of the Escalade's added luxury feel, Cadillac may have de-tuned or even taken away capabilities that remain in the Denali and AT4 affecting the Escalades relative driving capability in the above referenced less than ideal circumstances)
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 3 жыл бұрын
I'd imagine the Escalade and Denali should handle the rough weather about the same with the same winter tires on them. I don't think you'd notice that much a difference between the two if you had them back to back during the same sort of drive. My understanding is the GMC AT4 is just slightly better with off-road capability based on the hardware they install on it, I do hope to get one in summer depending on what's added to the press fleet out here.

@@nevco8774 even if it had a 3.0 TDI from VW or Merc or whatever, it's a diesel. It's boring, it has no exhaust note. Why get a diesel when you spend 100k ?! Get a Toyota tampon hybrid 7 seater of some sort. They will have zero sales with that diesel

@@borisyurinov4822 For me that Cadillac is a luxury SUV able to provide very long trips in comfort without getting bored the family members. Pandemics will be over. The exploring all over North America will be a blast. At that time stopping at gas stations each 200 miles having a V8 vs each 500 miles in Diesel will make a difference on a trip. All other stops on the road should be enjoyed anywhere else away from smelling gas stations. Yes, a V8 is very good on towing and in mountains and yes, provides a nice exhaust. But I doubt anyone is buying this vehicle for towing. And once again yes, you are right just for fuel economy hauling family accross country in comfort but without any Cadillac style is ok to buy a Toyota Sienna hybrid minivan which can be an 8 seater as well. And once again you nailed it naiming the most boring vehicle ever for that reason.

The fact the second row seats aren't ventilated in either the gm suvs or ford suvs is just sad. Honestly I still don't see a reason to get this over a denali other than looks, the screens are too gimmicky and the rest isn't worth the 30% price hike

Not sure why you're complaining, the natural 'competitor' to this is the Yukon, and since I drove it back to back it's the best way to show how the Escalade stands out over it.

Do you know, if you do use Apple Car Play or Android Auto for your maps in the Escalade while driving, instead of the maps that come with the Escalade directly, will that info still overlay onto the AR screen, showing turn arrows and distances and such? Thanks. And related to the same issue, it would be nice if it did work on the AR screen, since I suspect Apple Car Play and Android Auto may well update their road data, perhaps even regularly or frequently, but you may be stuck with whatever that data was in the Escalade itself at the time you bought the car. Do you know if you can update that data in the Escalade's system, or if it somehow does so automatically?

@@Nate-zy5ce So the map system for the Escalade, the one that you are referring to on the AR screen, from what I investigated is set. In this years Escalade its on a SD card in the center console, not on a DVD. If I use google maps through my apple car play, that map comes up on the screen on the right, the same as the Waze directions. I don't believe that any maps that you use through your phone will load on top of the vehicle navigation system. The only thing it does, is if you choose maps on the AR screen and choose navigation from the menu screen you can have both maps with their respective directions on both screens. Hope that helps.

@@Cocora22 It does help, and it's what I thought, but it's nice to confirm with someone who can actually sit in the vehicle and double check. Thank you so much for doing so. In case it is helpful to you or others, I don't remember where I heard this, but apparently after three years that you own the Cadillac, you can buy a monthly subscription, someone said $30/mo currently, that will allow you to update all sorts of things in the system. I assume that's done thru the SD card you mentioned. I have wondered what sorts of things would be updated whenever a new SD card is provided. For instance, might that cartoonish quality 3D camera pic of the Escalade be replaced by one more realistic looking like you see in the German competitors. And yes, maybe the NAV system will be updated with each new SD card. Probably other things in the tech too. I hate the idea of paying $30/mo, but frankly, it sounds like a very good idea, so I would pay such when the time came. That could solve the NAV issue being outdated, allowing the AR to continue to be useful with its NAV directional overlays. In the meantime, it is nice to be able to use Apple or Android to get the most current maps available. And if someone decides down the road not to pay that monthly subscription, they can just keep using their Apple and Android. Just thinking out loud. Keep up the great work.
