Still Worth it in 2020? | Seiko SKX013

My father had the pepsi bezel version (SKX015) since the late 90s but ditched it inside a toolbox for quite a long time. He handed it to me back in 2019 so I had it serviced, replaced the faded original bezel insert to a black aftermarket insert (similar to the 013), and fitted a solid link jubilee bracelet. It's quite small for someone with 7.5-8in wrist but still looks good because of the classic design.

I love the size of the SKX013, but the price is just too high now, so the value is not there anymore. In 2021 best value would be the Orient Kamasu with the sapphire crystal. I ended up buying that one. Even the Orient Ray 2 or Mako 2 are comparable to the SKX, and a third of the price. I still think the SKX013 is a beautiful watch and anyone is lucky to have it in their collection.

Depends. I found one in NOS condition for 230 euro , still amazing value imo. I'll be doing a 6r15 swap to update it a bit.

@@HRM.H Nice! On this side of the pond I haven't been able to find a decent one. The prices are from $450 to even $700. It's just not worth it at that price. I bought the Islander version, which is an upgraded modded version for less than $300. Very recommended! 👍

Good video! Bought a NOS SKX009 in 2020, nearly a year later got the SKX013. Sadly, it’s the version with a rubber strap. 🤦🏻‍♂️ I have some leather straps, NATOs, Haveston for it, but came here to see the Jubilee in action (love it on my 009). This video pretty much convinced me to buy the Jubilee. 😃 Was lucky enough to get an OEM. Should arrive on Tuesday, can’t wait! Also, a very good video. I love your enthusiasm and the uplifting voice. Keep it up. Cheers!

Same I have the SKX007 and going for the 013 with rubber, to be honest I think I will get a strapcode bracelet as the OEM is a bit on the flimsy side for me.

@@comeonman7423 update: I got a Jubilee off of Aliexpress, great bang for the buck. Apart from the hassle of adjusting the end links (which was 2 minutes tops), it’s awesome. It has a decent clasp. Might try a Strapcode in the near future. Nonetheless, I am still enjoying this Aliexpress Jubilee for 15$

Skx013 is just an underrated charming tool watch. Great size, in trend, wabi sabi japanese feel, sturdy and workhorse movement.. i would choose this watch over any microbrand diver just because seiko makes everything in house.

This watch it’s definitely worth it if you got it before it was discontinued, because it’s a good watch... but now in 2021, I don’t think is worth it anymore. I looked for one to buy for a good price not a while ago without luck. Everything was selling for over 500usd... and guess what, they haven’t been sold yet. The specs with the price do not match... people want the best value for money, and the SKX013 is not anymore, so people now is going towards different options. I got an Islander Watch ISL-20 (it’s a tribute to the SKX013... the one that everyone wanted but Seiko never released), and I couldn’t be happier. Hack and handwind movement, sapphire crystal, ceramic bezel and a super comfortable bracelet. Feels like an SKX (because it is), but it’s like the perfect mod... and it’s not expensive at all ;)

Great video! I would love to buy the SKX in 2021, however the price is very high. Could you tell me how much you would spend on one today? New ones cost around £500!!! I have found a few (used) for around £250 which seems reasonable. Thanks, Dudley

@@duddersh7612 I have an SKX007 with OEM stainless bracelet, “S” crown, day wheel swapped and brand new NH36 movement you can have for £250 and postage from Australia. Tiny mark on the Hardlex and the bezel insert. I was going to swap them out, but I decided to sell the watch as my interests have lead me elsewhere in the community. I suppose the bezel insert and crystal are cheap and easy to replace if you wish.

I love the look and heritage of the SKX, but the price approaching $400 when better spec’d watches like the Orient Ray II are readily available around $120-140, I don’t think this is a good value watch anymore. If they were equal price, I’d definitely take the SKX, but as it stands I’m leaning more towards the Orient Ray II.

I am selling my SKX007 for this, its costing me about $100 more which is a lot, but the SKX007 is actually too big for me. So in my mind its better to sell and pay extra for something that fits and I would wear.

Definitely not for 500. The specs are laughable. The Islander 38 is way better and only 300. This thing looks like a dinosaur now, glad I sold mine.

Just bought a really old SKX013 (spring bars rusted in the lug holes old). Over the next month or so I plan to get all the parts I need to bring it back to 150%. The only things I’m leaving stock is the bezel, bezel insert, and case back. Everything else is getting replaced and upgraded (even the gaskets). Does it make financial sense? hell no, an islander costs half the price and has more features buuuuuut it’s not an SKX and I didn’t go through the journey of making it. I also prefer mine on a perlon strap

@@PhilandWatches I think the fun is that nothing is of great importance as in no one cares that the dial has been swapped or that the bezel is different. I’ve spent the past 2 years collecting Rolex and the constant need to make sure every is period correct and authentic is a pain in the rear. This little seiko is my way of letting go of all those rules and just having fun 🤩

I bought one just on time just before they stopped making them for $410 which I thought was pretty good deal. Now they're going for $700, I wouldn't buy one for that much. I did have to regulate the watch but after regulating it it keeps time within seconds in a day. I love the Jubilee bracelet with a hollow end links, it makes the watch light and comfortable to wear. I really don't care for the aftermarket Jubilee bracelets, I bought one for my Orient kamasu and I actually like the original band better on the Orient the after market bracelets they are just to bulky and heavy for my liking. You just can't beat the heritage of the Seiko diver watch. I don't need all those upgrades like all these Boutique watches coming out with the nh36 movement which the specs for time have not changed they are still +45/-25 seconds a day, it is still a hit and miss getting one that keeps good time or not due to super mass production, I know have already experience that. I love the idea of the hacking and winding but I can live without it and they don't have the Heritage of the seiko.

For the price buy an Islander 38. NH35 with hacking and hand wind, drilled lugs, shoulderless fat spring bars, sapphire crystal, ceramic lumed bezel, solid bracelet with screw pins and milled clasp, signed crown, tons of styles with a more updated dial, for 300 bucks 🤷🏼‍♂️. I loved my SKXs but not for more than 250, it's a rip-off.
