Thanks man! Yeah it’s not easy actually to write all that in the description section but, I figure for new tiers it’s important to do so.

Another great tutorial Shawn. If you head down to a pet store, you can find a plastic flea comb. I bought one a few years ago and love if for working with deer hair. It really helps get the underfur out easily. If you work with it a lot, you can secure it to a desk. I believe Kelly Galloup does something like that. Thanks for another great tutorial.
@McFlyAngler6 жыл бұрын
Thanks man and yeah good idea. Specially for the really small fine work like that. The Walmart come though works really well for larger spinning clumps
@McFlyAngler6 жыл бұрын
Cool I’ll check there also. All I’ve ever seen are the large flee comb, hopefully I can find a small one.

Great video. I just had a total failure in trying to make a buck tail brush. It's in the trash.
@McFlyAngler6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, yeah bucktail brushes sound tough. Lol. Just such stuff fibers. Try using a heavier gage wire and keep it super stiff while twisting, might help...

Great video, I always struggle with hair spinning. I think I’m using too much. I tied three and the last one I went a little lighter on the hair and it didn’t spin.
@McFlyAngler5 жыл бұрын
The hair on the wing? I guess if you use too much it can yeah, but also if you don’t have a small thread base it will spin on the bare hook also. Try a light thread base to place it on, and if your still having trouble, you can cheat and put a super light dot of super glue on the thread base before placing the hair on it. It won’t spin at that point. Also make sure you lock it down tight with some tight enough wraps. Of course too tight and it will cut the hair.
@SufferingOutdoors5 жыл бұрын
@@McFlyAngler Yeah, when I do the wing. I always cover the hook shank with thread. I think it is a combination of a little too much hair and not enough thread pressure. I will try to superglue trick next time.
@McFlyAngler5 жыл бұрын
Use a very light amount though, you don’t want to glue your fingers there. Lol!

As you know I am really new to tying flys - What does ‘dry’ fly mean? Dry means the fly always floats or that the fibres used don’t absorb water? If there is a dry fly then is there a wet fly haha? What does a stimulater fly do apposed to other type of flys? Thanks. Craig - Australia
@McFlyAngler6 жыл бұрын
Generally a dry fly refers to a fly that sits on top of the water to mimic an adult bug. Stimulators mimic a specific bug species, different flies are made to mimic different bugs.

What size thread are you using?
@McFlyAngler2 жыл бұрын
I have been pretty busy I keep meaning to check what I used in the video. Most of the time I put the info of materials used in the description section. Please check that. Otherwise you can use any size you want. I’ve used as fine as 16/0 for small ones, and as heavy as 6/0 for larger ones.

Lol thanks! Yeah hackle isn’t cheap my friend. Probably the most expensive investment in fly tying. To save money just use brown hackle throughout. One cape, dubbing, deer hair, and hooks should run no more than $60-65 with the discount I gave u guys...
@Ruynu6 жыл бұрын
McFly Angler Thanks! I’m just starting out and need to gradually acquire some materials anyway. Great channel sir!
@McFlyAngler6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah if your just starting out maybe steer clear of dry flies that use hackle. Haha. CDC dries are a good one for less expense. But of course you get one hackle neck, it will last you a good long time and a brown should be able to tie a huge range of flies. I use brown hackle for elk hair caddis, many of my catskill style dries, and this stimulator along with a bunch others.
