Canary in a Coal Mine... awesome. I can't believe people think it's irritating. And Blown Away... never even realized it was on the album until you pointed it out. Once again, I can't believe you were able to figure out those lines. That's just outrageous. VOICES... How the hell did you ever figure that out, let alone play it. Crap man, that was awesome. I really need to revisit that album now, but I'm never going to try to play that Voices medley as long as I live. Not worth the personal anxiety. Great job!

I love these bass lines!!! The live mashup of voices/when the world is running down is one of my favorite things they've ever done. I basically just rewinding and listening until I can match the melody. I have to do that for a lot of these guys because a lot of tabs are just plain wrong. It pays to use your ears first!

Stumbled across this series today, and spent most of my day watching almost all of them. Excellent work in deconstucting these bass lines I have been listening to for so many years.....I’m gonna throw Jack Casady out as one I’d love to see, but there’s so many greats, so I’m sure whomever you do will be cool.....thanks so much! And I will contribute to help keep you doing these...

Bombs Away is a good example of Sting's talent. On the face of it, the bass line seems quite simple but actually difficult to pull off. The musicianship of all three guys is very high, all played with jazz artists throughout their career. Yes, indeed Stewart Copeland wrote Bombs Away. Contact on Regatta De Blanc is another good example.

I bet something had to do with Sting's raw vocals from the early days and his later "jazzy" stuff going on until recent days.
@LegendsofBass
@LegendsofBass 7 жыл бұрын
Well that's the interesting thing -- on that particular tour, they made them more rock oriented. More band stuff. Guitar solos, breakdowns, new endings, new intros, mashups like this. Really cool stuff. To your point, Sting does a lot of his songs in more of an acoustic/lounge act style nowadays. Fun fact: His current band is a former Police tribute band!
@Marc310380
@Marc310380 5 жыл бұрын
Sorry but where did you hear that Sting's current band members used to be in a Police tribute band? And what musicians are you referring to there? I may be wrong but I'd consider that not to be true. Maybe you mean Andy Summers who did indeed play for a while with a band that did a lot of old Police tracks.

As for the Voices/When The World medley, it is Sting's live medley from before Police reunion. He doesn't slap the bass, he only pops the upper strings - that's his signature sound since The Soul Cages tour. Instead of Voices, he often performs Bring On The Night as the first song, and then into the WTWIRD - just like on his live album from 1986
@BenCDaugherty
@BenCDaugherty 2 ай бұрын
Depends actually. Some of the thumbed notes he is indeed adding a percussive element. He’s not slapping like flea or anything but yes it’s the motion just done and plucked lightly.

wow. Great channel! Love the anecdotes and history leading into the lines that make the songs great in all the artists you cover. The thing that is making me comment however, is the remark that some interweb users (musicians..maybe?) made that Stings' bass work in Canary on Zenyetta is perhaps 'kinda annoying, and/or repetative'...? Well, unless these people are the likes of Chris Squire, Les Claypool, James Jamerson, Vic Wooten, Lee Sklar, Geddy, etc...then they should zip it, smile and say 'thank you'...unless they can DO BETTER... Thanks again and look forward to more vids. Cheers!

I am a very big RUSH fan, and I want to raise this situation to you: So, I heard Walking on the Moon for the first time this week. When I heard the intro I immediately thought it was a RUSH song, because I was super certain they have a song with the exact same intro. Then I heard Sting start singing, and I wasn't sure how it was possible. So all week I have been digging for the RUSH song I was so certain shared the same intro, and I can't find it. The closest I could get was Digital Man. When I listen, the songs couldn't be different save for the techno reggae sounds. Do you have any thoughts?

I don't think Rush and Police sound too similar. Rush have a more progressive sound, speed was king. Police are more subtle. Even subtle jazz influences in the later records. Oh My God from Synchronicity a good example.
