A Winters Night: this concert, from Durham Cathedral, 09 blew my mind. Sting and his hand picked group of wonderful musicians rocked it! The brother and sister, Kathryn and Peter Tickell on the violins are special favourites of mine. Just listen to "Team Spirit". Ah the timeless music of the British Isles and Eire!

@aoifem708 pre reformation in Ireland and Britain. Praying for the dead was abandoned after the reformation in protestant England but I suspect continued more strongly in a Catholic sympathetic Ireland. But souling was practised in the North East and Yorkshire well into the 20th century. Sting comes from the northea. I wonder if learnt this song at his grandmother's knee? He sings it here in a NE accent.

@@doredam8919 predates hallows Eve/Samhain. Listen to the lyrics: "one for Peter, two for Paul, three for him that made us all". It's actually the opposite of trick or treating. It's the child asking for a treat and if the household can't afford it, the child prays them a blessing. It dates to the high middle ages.

LYRICS: A soul cake, a soul cake, Please, good missus, a soul cake, An apple, a pear, a plum or a cherry, Any good thing to make us all merry. A soul cake, a soul cake, Please, good missus, a soul cake, One for Peter, two for Paul, And three for Him that made us all. God bless the master of this house And the mistress also, And all the little children That round your table grow, The cattle in your stable, The dogs at your front door, And all that dwell within your gates We'll wish you ten times more. A soul cake, a soul cake: Go down into the cellar And see what you can find, If the barrels are not empty We'll hope that you'll be kind, We'll hope that you'll be kind With your apple and your pear, And we'll come no more a-soulin' Till Christmas time next year. A soul cake, a soul cake: The streets are very dirty, Me shoes are very thin, I have a little pocket To put a penny in, If you haven't got a penny A ha'penny will do, If you haven't got a ha'penny God bless you. A soul cake, a soul cake

You are correct in its origins, certainly. He may have simply carried on a 'mistake' started by Peter, Paul and Mary in the sixties. I know that I learned it as a Christmas song in the 70's here in the US, based on Peter Paul and Mary's version. I hope it did make him some money, it is a very tasteful arrangement.
