Thanks for the great analysis Kevin. I bought a pair and tested them today on an old quad. At first they didn't have reasonable range. Then I realized that my old VTX transmitting at 800mW could be interfering. I turned it down to 25mW and my range increased. Wow, the crystal clear image is so cool. Now I'm rebuilding the quad without the analog camera and VTX to see what my max range can be. So far, it is pretty nice to see digital clarity. Scraggle and branches can't hide anymore. :) The latency when flying behind metal buildings does suck. I need to work on the antenna placement.

It won't be anywhere the engineering level of DJI. Id expect half the range, nowhere near as refined and gauranteed it won't progress/update as quickly as djis version. They will be fighting a battle they can't possibly hope to win against a monstrous company with almost infinite resources to throw at the system if they decide to. Just look at fatsharks history. After more than a year of people whinging about the crappy DVR software they provide on their goggles it wasn't until immersionrc organised new firmware to fix the flaws that anything was done. @TAGE_FPV5 жыл бұрын
patch antennas don't offer better reception for digital signals unless all 4 antennas are combined together. this is because for analog we want zero MIMO signal transversal and for digital we want ONLY MIMO signal transversal. this is why wifi uses dipoles and not patch antennas for the most part. you COULD probably add HUGE 5.8ghz dipoles on all 4 antenna ends and get better range though
@rcrdps81445 жыл бұрын
@@TAGE_FPV I find the VAS patch antennas provide fairly decent omni coverage for closer in, and great directional coverage too. I sometimes fly with only patches. So could try 4 of those assuming most of your flying will be in front of you. I find that for my yard( 1 acre), I fly around behind me( while standing in the air conditioned house) just fine, but at around 75-100yds, I need to have a patch pointed in that general direction. Variation in latency even at the finest amount is going to cause issues with racing and ironically the only places we don't have video quality issues is at club level events. Will be interesting to see this system used in an extremely high RF environment such as a big race and see if constant variation in latency occurs. If so it's going to make for some very random race results. Still early days yet, hopefully DJI can get on top of all the issues. Awesome work buddy.

I was a TV engineer for over 30 years and worked through the analogue to digital switch over , the digital signal is great when it works but it's either there or it's not and this is the problem , the latency and freezing pictures are definitely NOT something I want for fpv. The answer is not simple, maybe use lower frequencies in video connection, maybe even adjust the frequency and or data levels depending on the signal quality so automatically lower frequencies which penetrate better when signals get weak... We have a long way to go still before good reliable hd fpv is here.

First of all - thanks for the amazingly informative and objective review (subbed). I did have a question - when you were describing the latency of the system (around the 10:00 mark) you comment that the air unit is 14 seconds ahead of the goggles in the video editor. Surely the actual latency is much less (I know you stated a max of 300 ms)? 14 seconds over the course of a less than ten minute flight is certainly a lot, but it's more important to know the maximum latency during flight.

I think the variable latency is the huge part. Also how does this function with failsafes? How long will the system wait for the next frame before it desides to shut down? Our quads travel pretty fast, an extra 1 even ONE second of having no control is the difference between a broken quad, injury, damage etc. Also what if it freezes at a moment im punching? Does it just full throttle for 3 seconds since that's it's last "input" frame? Too many unanswered questions for me. Also just not enough general research in the penetration/reliability of the system. I can imagine flying this in a city with lots of RF would basically be impossible.

Coming back from flying across a lake, playing with boats and skiers, not enough detail in my analog feed to see where I started (made the trip several times too) lost video but got far enough away that I couldn't hear and didn't know which way to turn my goggles. I assume an HD feed in my goggles would have helped with that! Oh well it will be very interesting going from a nice analog setup to this DJI system. They both kick in hard behind my house and this thing is blasting out 700mw... :/ Old SD card caused the goggles to reboot mid flight on two packs. Ran 5 or so with no card and it went away.
@stingersswarm5 жыл бұрын
Ooh reboot no bueno. Apparently the new firmware helps with the variable latency but requires a new radio battery for all testers. Don’t ask me why. As soon as that comes in I’m going to do more testing.

great review man, waiting for the next review after maybe the dji update to solved the latency problem

I really hope to see some improvements via firmware updates.

@@stingersswarm yeah I'll be waiting u reviewing its. Im sure you hav the capablity to fairly test it weather its good or still need improvement , its a new era of fpv if its done well. I love to wait for it. Thanks man

I had a feeling right from the start that variable latency would be an issue, I could deal with higher latency if it’s consistent but if it’s changing all the time it would really throw me off. I would love a good HD FPV system but I’m happy to see someone actually showing how this one differs from the current analogue set ups 👍👊
@stingersswarm5 жыл бұрын
Yeah it really is the variable latency that is the issue.

I can't wait until more people get there hands on the system. It's kinda hard to explain.

8:38 This is what would happen with my Dronium IIIap and 3X with the freeze frames using the phone and VR goggles. But the lag was always 0.2 to 0.5 seconds. Doable but no warning when you've set up a trick per say. And I'm still trying to shake off that muscle memory to this day. Getting better it is.

It has been confirmed by some test pilots that you can use a USB-C to HDMI adapter to output the feed from the goggles. It's just not mentioned anywhere in their documentation.
@snowleopardfpv5 жыл бұрын
That's interesting. Who were the pilots that mentioned this and do you have a source (link) verifying that information?

I’ve heard this too. I’m going to give it a try as soon as I can find my adapter.

@stingy, this seems to be a completely different experience to kabab's testing, who showed the system being more flyable in extreme scenarios than analog. What do you think is causing these different results? Is there a difference in firmware? Because this is the first time I've seen a freeze frame issue
@stingersswarm5 жыл бұрын
Kabab actually showed the same freeze frame issue at the far end of the range. Paul bitmatta is editing the video and adding the frozen frames so everyone can see them close in.

How about a flight with crossfire using dji goggles and camera. Is this possible?
@MrDevilFlash5 жыл бұрын
You don't HAVE TO use their RC controller. You don't even need to connect your air unit to your FC (but you can so you make your air unit talk to betaflight and adjust PID through your goggle). You can just wire the air unit on the battery and have video feed. And use different protocol for RC control (R9, Crossfire,...).

it would be great if you could show us a bird eye view of the location so we could understand and imagine your flying conditions and obstacles between you and the quad. I am normally at the same park or area where my quad is, when flying. and I never get the sort of staticKY situation like you had here. r u pushing it un realistically too hard or some thing.
@stingersswarm5 жыл бұрын
Pushing it to the limits. They have a firmware update but require sending me some new hardware. I want to do a follow up video highlighting my experience in a more typical environment. But yeah pushing the gear to the limits is what I do, so I'm interested in how it performs at those limits.

Did you really get 900ms at this point? Not sure I've seen more than 60ms ever. DJI for about 4 months now.
@Skankhunt-42-5 жыл бұрын
So how far did it actually get? Like in metres or feet if that's what you use? You said behind some trees/obstacles but how far is that?
@stingersswarm5 жыл бұрын
Distance is irrelevant when you put obstacles between you and the drone. 4km is straight line of sight no trees. This was 100-150 yards.

@@stingersswarm JUST make Clear........How far is the Dji System Still flyable for freestyle if you have obstacles between you and the drone??... only 100-150 yards??...in meter is only 137mtrs????.......Thank you Bro...!!!
@stingersswarm5 жыл бұрын
Ronny Rengkung that distance isn’t the important part. The amount of trees and ground between the quad and me is. You could probably do half a mile with a tree between you but be hard pressed to do 50 meters in a forest.

I'm new to FPV, but I've been building PCs for 20 years. If there is anything that I've learned about tech, it's to not get overly excited about gen 1 of ANYTHING. It's always great to see something new come out, but it's immature and will always need to have some bugs worked out. Sometimes it will happen through firmware updates and the product will improve. Usually it's not until the 2nd versions come out though. I love what DJI has done here. They literally kicked the door open on something that some people were even saying wasn't going to be possible for FPV use. They will work on theirs and make it better. They have already forced Fatshark's hand and they are announcing their own HD FPV system. Others will start to follow. It will take time, but it has already even sparked a little competition on these new HD products. DJI has even made this system competitively priced with the high end analog systems that people are already flying. The thing that really surprised me was when it wasn't actually completely proprietary. It already has limited functionality with Betaflight OSD and they say that will get better. It can also be used with your existing receiver and transmitter if you want to go that route as well. This is all good stuff for the future of improving the FPV experience and getting more people into this hobby/sport!

I totally agree. I'm excited for where this platform is headed. My initial titled ended with yet. I think I may add it back because I fully believe they will continue to improve this platform.
