Does this plant attract flies? Pawpaws are pollinated by flies.
@Sheikyerbouti8
@Sheikyerbouti8 3 жыл бұрын
Yes it attracts thousands of flies while it is blooming, but it is only in bloom for 3-4 days in the spring. A better choice for attracting flies would be Stapelia gigantea. They bloom much more frequently.

Wow, this plant is from my country Taiwan! Its pistil become mature firstly, then its stamen, so it cannot self-fertile. You need to collect its pollen and froze it until next flower.
@Sheikyerbouti8
@Sheikyerbouti8 7 жыл бұрын
Hi. They do need a second flower to pollinate as you said, but A. henryii is apomictic. The plant will produce viable seeds without any pollen. Those seeds will be clones of the plant. I have seeds from this plant right now, and I've never had more than one flower in a year. I have 100% verified that the plant is apomictic.

Cool! Thanks! As far as i know, Amorphophallus bulbife, Amorphophallus kiusiana and Amorphophallus muelleri are apomictic. So as Amorphophallus henryi. Interesting!

Amorphophallus henryi needs pollinators to get seeds, its not self fertile.

Hey Zane. How you been? You were my very first subscriber back when you were going by smurfboy. As far as A. henryi not being apomictic, well if that's true, then I was given some mis-information. As far as this inflorescence goes, you're right. No fruits. Of course someone else said the same thing to me about A. muelleri, but they were wrong in that case. A. muelleri is apomictic. Time will tell, but as of right now, it appears that you are right. Cheers amigo.

Hey yes henryii is not "apomictic" but mulleri is indeed and if i'm right it has blue berries, I have muelleri but it hasn't bloomed yet, henryii bloomed last year.

Yeah, I've got fruits on one of my A. muelleri specimens right now. I've gotten them before too. They don't always set fruit when they bloom, but they usually do. I remember them turning orange, not blue, but I wasn't really paying attention to that. I'll pay closer attention to that this year. They're currently still green but swelling and getting larger.

Do you have a mullerii video?

So I was willing to concede that you might be right about A. henryi not being apomictic, but like always, I verified it for myself. This year I'm getting fruits, and only one flower, so it is not a result of pollination. As it turns out, A. henryi IS apomictic as the literature states. It produces seeds without being pollinated. I have verified this.

I have bought this plant and I have never planted any voodoo lily. I am a beginner on voodoo lilies but I am very good at gardening. Is this a good beginner voodoo lily?

Hi again Randy. Congrats on a flower. I have lots of Amorphs from over the years but gosh none have ever flowered. I'd be happy with one flower. I thought this year would be the year for my paeonifollius but now the spike is too tall and i don't think it will be a flower. I will make a video update soon. I'd love to see your other Amorphs.

+Thagirion9 Be sure to give them plenty of Phosphorus in the second half of the season when they are growing next year's tuber. That will help a lot, but ultimately it just takes a lot of patience. Yeah, the spikes come up fat and egg shaped when they are blooming. I had my A. paeoniifolius, and my A. muelleri for quite a few years before they bloomed for the first time. I'm in the middle of making an Amorphophallus paeoniifolius video now. I just bought this A. henryi tuber. An inflorescence was the first thing it grew. It seems to be setting seed now, so I should have seedlings next year. I've had an A. bulbifer, and a couple of A. konjac type specimens for a couple of years, but no blooming yet. I just started growing A. maxwelli, A. impressus, and two different cultivars of A. konjac (Leo Song, and Nightstick). once I get my hands on an A. aphyllus, I think I'll be done collecting them.
@ScaryFear
@ScaryFear 8 жыл бұрын
Randy's Tropical Plants Ok thanks. I'll have to find a fertilizer with that. I just give everything the granule stuff that's 10 10 10. I just got some A konjac night stick. I can't wait for them to come up. They are babies though but for that it's the tree stage that is so cool. I have A. bulbifer, A. gigas, A. titanum and that's it I think. I had A. aphyllus but they died. That was heart breaking. Such a cute lamp shape. I don't know what went wrong. I had 2. One came up the other didn't and then it died. Was an expensive loss. I do want A. maxwellii and konjac leosong eventually and I think that will be it for me. I'll let you know when I post my update.

+Petals on the Paving Slabs Well now you can enjoy them in my videos without having to smell them. The smell is pretty awful, but it is part of what makes these plants interesting too.

Hi again. What kind of fertilizer do you use on your amorphs. I thought for sure this year my amorph would be a flower but it turned into a giant tree. Pretty cool but next year I'd like it to flower. Something I can get easily at a home depot or lowes.

Hey! Good to hear from you, as always. I use miracle gro formulated for tomatoes. I use that on all rhizomatous/tuberous plants. P is essential for tuber/rhizome growth. Regular miracle gro has too much N and not enough P. The MG tomato food is a better balance and it has some micro-nutrients too. If you really want to light a fire under its ass, use a bloom formulation in the last third of the season when it is sucking up and storing as much nutrient for next year as it possible can. Start that sometime around the last week of Aug. Try a liquid bloom food mixed at 1/5 strength, every 7-10 days. For general fertilization, I always use time release granular, but when you are looking for a specific result, liquid is the way to go. You have way more control over when it gets its nutrients and exactly which nutrients it gets. Of course, you have to be a bit more diligent about your feeding schedule, but for plant-people like you and I, that's not really a problem. We tend to dote over our babies anyway. With liquid, you can burn plants more easily too, though, so I always go to 1/4 or 1/5 strength weekly rather than full strength monthly. For extra sensitive plants I'll even go down to 1/10 the recommended concentration, but for A. paeoniifolius, 1/5 concentration weekly should be good. Cheers!

Randy's Tropical Plants Thank you. Good stuff to know I have been using the granules that are 10 10 10 but knew I needed something better. I make a 1/4 for my nepenthes so that is something I am used to. End of Aug is good to know. I definitely have time to do a weekly feeding to them. I think my paeonifollius should have flowered this year. Definitely want to make it go off next year. I'll let you know when I make a video update on them.

Cool, I look forward to it. When you give them enough P in the last half of the season, you'll be surprised by how much bigger the tuber is. I use 10-10-10 for lots of stuff too. Mostly for things in the ground. It's a decent all around fert, and it's cheap, but when you want specific results, you've got to go liquid. For some REALLY special plants that I want to coddle, I'll even use hydroponic nutrients, but those are EXPENSIVE. Reserved only for the rarest of the rare.
