My 12yr old does baffle me that he watches other people play video games, BUT he does also like to be hands on in his own shop! We converted a storage building into a shop for him (to keep him out of my shop). He has rebuilt the engine on a three wheeler, fixed up several go-carts, a minibike and is very interested in tools and using his wood lathe. He is in Boy Scouts and we are planning several tool demonstrations he is going to do for the troop. Too many kids today have little to no exposure to tools.

He raced at Daytona in the ARCA series. High school kids trying to learn how to build his own engines by doing them himself. So I got him in my shop and we had class lol. But they are out there!

I've got a super-low temperature one that I bought. Looks similar to your coffee-cup model, but better engineered with ball races everywhere, and the power piston is graphite running in a glass cylinder. It runs from just the heat of my hand, or from the sun when I place it so that either the 'top' or 'bottom' plate gets warmed by the sunshine a few degrees hotter than the other plate. I also made one with just hand tools and scrap parts; it used a flexible membrane (cut from a balloon) as the power 'piston' and a CD as a flywheel; it ran, but needed a cup of boiling water to provide sufficient temperature difference.

Mr. Pete glad I found you, I now have an obsession With Craftsman Lathes. I have your videos on all the time (watch some over & over) I went to Boston Public Schools and up until the mid 70's they had a few good Shop / Trade High Schools, (Electrical, Sheet-Metal & Woodworking), but the decline & ghettoization of the City with forced Bussing ended that. Nowadays they spend over$30,000 per student and only have 12 Students per Teacher and they still complain and graduate (Honor Students) that are functionally illiterate.. Even the "Good" public School Systems treat Boys like defective Girls so you wont see Serious or any Technical & Skilled Trade Trade Education I was a poor Kid , hated School and didn't make it out of elementary school, Had I had a Teacher like you I'm sure it would have made School interesting & exciting and likely changed my life , and I don't doubt you have changed some for the better,.

A better cycle than the Stirling might be a Brayton type cycle. High compression , then isobaric heating, then expansion. Finally, isobaric exhaust. High pressure would improve efficiency. External combustion heating is possible in the cycle. Two cylinders would be needed. Using opposed pistons would reduce vibrations.

I love those model engines so much! It's hard for me to imagine why don't they spark more interest interest in new generations. I mean, not everyone's got a machine shop, but neither do I (I do currently own a small lathe and a few basic tools) but I was interested in many things like this (models and technology in general) ever, since I was a little kid. I guess it just depends on how you were raised... If parents have no interest in things like these, it's much less likely that their children will. Technological advancements are part of the reason, too. Everything is easily available and if anything breaks down, you don't need any skills to fix it, you just buy a replacement. And it's the way that an ordinary person functions; they strive to make their lives easier and avoid anything that would make them have to think a little. Videogames are easy and fun for a small kid. They don't require much thinking and you can basically decide what you want to do in that "virtual reality"... Wanna drive fast cars? No problem. Wanna build something? No problem. Wanna kill all your imaginary enemies? No problem. Model engines? Well, you have to have something special for something like that, to be interesting to you... Yes, growing up with things like these, does help, but I think there's more. Is it a higher IQ? You've probably noticed that less intelligent people (even children) are attracted to just the things that immediately give them some form of satisfaction or happiness, while others also feel good when learning about something or figuring out how something works or I don't know, how to make something work better... I think all that an average person sees when they see a model engine run, is; a running engine. People, like we, that are interested in model engines, see a nicely tuned machine, a mechanism, with many parts, all working together, to produce a smooth, spinning motion, and we see all the thinking and hard work, that went into creating such a nice models. Ordinary people are just used to getting everything cheaply in stores and that's probably why they don't appreciate any of this. I sure do, however and I'm glad to see I'm not alone. I hope to see many more videos like this and I sure appreciate all the work you've put in, for all the long "how to make" videos. They are so pleasant to watch :)

So if you connect a generator to a "hot air" powered engine, connect the generator to a TV set playing cable news, and then place the engine in front of the TV, you should end up with a perpetual motion machine. If it doesn't work, the usefulness of the engine is not at fault.

Good morning Mr. Pete, Nice collection of engines. You keep saying kid have no interest in anything like these engines, I think that problem started at a early age when the tv was the babysitter. When I was young I had erector sets and use my imagination with nuts bolts and steel pieces. I don't recall eating the nuts and bolts either. Of course that was a different time in history when parents took more interest in what there kid were doing. Just my ramblings so don't make to much of it. I think kid should be exposed to different kinds of stimulations to get their interest up and by all means if they want to get dirty just let them. As a teacher you have shown a lot of kid how to use the tools which is a good thing. Not all kids are what I call collage material and should not in anyway pushed that way.

Use of external combustion and a Brayton type cycle instead of a Stirling, and using an opposed twin type configuration, is an idea that would gather lots of views on KZbin.
