Who cares about their private lives? it's none of our business, anyway. I just don't go there. But Mayer has one of the most appealing voices in pop, is a versatile guitarist, and wrote some of the cleverest tunes I've heard in the last 15 years. Herbie Hancock is a deserved jazz legend who easily moves into pop, and adds a little class in the process.

Liked this when I first heard it back in 2006---had no idea it was John Mayer at the time. I can't stand him because he's an egotistical dick, but he's actually a pretty good guitar. Not that great of a singer---he knows how to make some catchy melodies, though. I'm guessing this was written for him, though.

+HandsOnFire Mostly A Mixolydian. Not all the chords use that scale, though. The verse's chords are A B7 D7sus4 then A again. The chorus's chords are basically A G D G. Those chords will have to have their own individual scales.

Just play minor pentatonic, play around with the major third and add on the 6th and 9th a little bit now and then and the b5 in passing. That's probably the easiest way to look at it, and how JM would. Learn some blues licks, focusing on where to bend. Try and sing the idea as you play it, to lock your ears and fingers together. Once you've got that, find the 3rds and b7ths of each chord and try and land on them at the right time. You'll get a lot of mileage from that approach.
