Sweatshirt Transformation #4,Sweatshirt to Jacket, DiY Fashion

In this tutorial I transform this Comfort Color Sweatshirt into a jacket. I show how I deconstruct the sweatshirt and make patch pockets from the bottom band. A toggle closure is also made from parts of the sweatshirt.

Hi Julia - love this tutorial. I’m halfway through doing this but wish it were as easy as you make it look! Just one question - how do you get rid of the crease across the middle of the pockets? I’m reluctant to press with a steam iron in case it stretches it out of shape and not sure if it would get rid of the creases anyway. Hi Sylvia, Unfortunately the crease is there to stay. Most of my buyers are thrilled that I use the cuffs for the pocket and don't question the crease. Sometimes up-cycles are a bit wonky.

Hi Irina, The sweatshirt that I use in my videos are new sweatshirts that I get from an on-line supplier. I do wash and dry them before I start my work. I wash all my repurposed fabric and garments also. Thanks for watching. Julia

What thread did you use on the toggle?

I use a bobbin thread in the bobbin. It is lighter weight but strong.

what kind of sweatshirts do you use? it looks,like the band at bottom is wider then some sweatshirts have, and looks alot longer. I like long. also, though you use them, why is the bottom always cut off, and sleeves.. Years back, I've done jackets, but I like the band on bottom left on. seams to fit closer to the body. I've done both cutting off sleeves and bottom band and it fits boxy..dont know why. LOVE POCKETS!!!

Hi Laurie, I use Color Comfort Sweatshirts that are unisexed sizing. The size L, XL, and 2XL run long. I make several different styles. My shorter customers really appreciate that I take the band off. I also make a tunic sweatshirt by leaving the bottom band on and cutting and sides up approximately 4 inches. I edge stitch around the complete bottom with my serger. You can see some of my tunic styles in my etsy shop. www.StitchesbyJulia.etsy.com. I also turn the cuffs into a pocket on many of my designs. Adding side pockets in the seam can also easily be done. So many ideas with a basic sweatshirt!

Hi Julia, Have you ever tried to fringe the bottom of the sweatshirt.jacket. I'm going to fringe my daughters hope it works!

Karen Herman Hi Karen, yes I have! It curls a bit when washed but I love the look! Have fun with it 😊
