Hand Quilting WITHOUT a hoop on my lap

I am 78 and want to make sure that my 3 children have at least one quilt specifically made for them. So, I have now big-stitched hand quilted 2 and 3/4 quilts with #10 crochet thread because I don't feel like juggling a big quilt on my sewing machine. I also quilt without a hoop, although I made one in the 90's using that method. After making the quilt sandwich on a folding table I smooth out everything and clip it to the edge. Starting in the middle I use masking tape (1/4" or 1" or?) to mark the area I want to quilt. Then I apply small quilter's safety pins placed very close together. Here are a few things I've discovered. #1 - The thread is too thick to pull through the fabric nicely and I have back stitched instead which is not the best on the back if it can be seen (but I know it is secure). #2 - The back is sometimes not as smooth or secure as I would like, so periodically I check the back to be sure it is being quilted properly. #3 - Interestingly it does not take as long as I thought it would and has resulted in a more interesting quilt. I have 3+ boxes of DMC embroidery thread left over from my cross-stitch days, and I prefer the crochet thread as it is one piece. When I am finished with these quilts, I hope to try my hand using one of your ideas. Thanks for all of your videos!

I am 68, a recently retired nurse. I started sewing 4 years ago during Covid, never having sewn anything before. I gave myself a target. One quilt for my granddaughter and one for each of my three children, total 4. The story photo reversible queen sized quilt for my granddaughter took 2 years. I have just finished the second quilt after 20 months. Both hand sewn and quilted. I have also embroidered their birth details on the quilt, by hand, and this forms part of the quilting process. I don’t use a hoop. I use my tables to take the weight and I move around the tables to do the quilting. In that way I reduce the weight on my wrists. Hopefully the last two quilts will not take that long.

To you and hazelem1266 - what blessings you are to your families. They will be wrapped in love long after you are gone. When my granddaughter was almost here, I decided to crochet a baby blanket. Melanie, who has since passed, gave me the confidence to give it a go. I never had had luck before, but I DID IT! It was basic, but I have pictures of her and I with the small blanket. My grandmother (Mom Mom) and great-aunts back handpieced/quilted on quilting frames my grandfather made using saw horses and other things I didn't see. I remember her teaching me different stitches and the POP of the knot going through the Fabric was magic to a little girl. Now at 63, I'm going to give it a go, but without the frame, though with abundant memories

@@eavesdroppin1 With the quilt that I have just finished and handed over a week ago after 20 months, I sewed it as follows, bearing in mind that it is only the second quilt I have made. In fact I have never sewn anything, ever. On the back I had pieced together my son’s tshirts and hoodies of which the blocks were irregular, a cotton batting and the front was a plain cotton and I made a large serpentine film reel which consisted of more than 40 photos from babyhood to adulthood, his career and his achievements. It was so heavy and so thick. So I let the quilt lay on my tables to take the weight. I used the Japanese shashiko needles and number 8 perle cotton. They went through pretty smoothly. I also foolishly thought I’d match the borders. My word what a challenge, but I managed. On the cotton borders I used a needle with a golden eye, can’t remember the name. Sorry I’m lying in bed and I’m too lazy to get up. Came three in a pack. I very rarely backstitched except where I wanted to reinforce or the layers were too thick. I took so long because I was making it up as I went and I was stupidly ambitious.

@@KimtheElder I also learned so much from Melanie’s tutorials as I was learning. I too was so sorry to hear of her passing. My husband made me a beautiful quilting frame with three poles and cogs and everything. It can be used on a tabletop or on its legs. I was determined to learn how to use it. When I started the actual quilting of my first quilt, I found that I was more comfortable with using the oven glove method and that is what I am still using today. The quilting frame has been dismantled and has never been used, I’m sorry to say. As we are thinking of downsizing, I may sell it.

I'm 78 and a hand quilter. After sitting at my quilting frame, my back gets tired. I've tried hoops, and they're okay, but I can't always run a nice stitch. So this method is perfect.

Tip: When I use my bed for pin basting, I put my large cutting mat between the quilt and the bed so the pins have a firm surface. Then, I just slide the mat along the quilt as I go.

Great video Rachel. I’ve been quilting for over 30 years now and I’ve always done it in the hand with small quilting needles. I was in a quilting group and they were very strict with how you did your quilting.😂 Times have changed through the years and it’s become more relaxed. As I’m getting older my fingers can’t handle a small needle. Also I’ve also pulled my thread from the back to hide the knots then you can’t damage the front of your quilt. Your quilt is beautiful and one day I might just be able to buy some liberty fabric and make one. It’s really expensive in Australia. Take care and look forward to seeing more of your projects.

Wonderful video that I'm certain will encourage new quilters to give handquilting a try. I've been a quiltervsince 1991 and adore my time handquilting. Here's something I discovered recently. I have a friend who uses 505 spray baste for all her quilts. She has lovely big tables she can lay a queen sized quilt on...what a gift! Anyway, we basted a big quilt with 505, I quilted about half the blocks then life got in the way and it was a year before I got back to it. Not one pin in it BUT I had ironed it (the quilt sandwich) prior to quilting. A year...or maybe even two later, it hadn't pulled away at all. So try ironing your quilt right now. You won't need those pins. Happy quilting!

You look so beautiful surrounded by your stunning quilt!!!! Love that dress on you. I also quilt in my lap no hoop. This was really good and simple instructions. Hopefully others will give it a go. It is so relaxing and peaceful. That back fabric is amazing, what is it called? I am still at the Alice book and am in the midst of several squares in a row that all have 16 - 1 1/2 inch squares sewn on corners around squares!!!!! Very hard to keep straight and square. I love sewing, quilting, embroidery, knitting, crochet....all sorts of crafts. While I enjoy following channels from crafters worldwide for inspiration and motivation, it is really nice to find a channel from fellow Brit who shops in the same places I do (Hobbycraft...Woolwarehouse....). I'll have to look out for some of that Hobbycraft coloured masking tape! Thanks for the great tutorial. I've done a lot of sewing over the years but am relatively new to quilting. So far I've made 5 quilts and am on the 6th. I started off hand quilting as I didn't have a walking foot for my old Bernina but the last 2 I've machine quilted (managed to source a Bernina walking foot to fit a 40 year old machine lol). However, I definitely prefer hand quilting both the look of it and the process. I couldn't bear using a hoop - way too fiddly for me - so I lay the quilt on the dining table, put my cutting mat down so as not to scratch the table and off I go. It takes me about 2 weeks to quilt a queen sized piece. I'm happy with that as it's a very meditative process. Some really ;useful tips in this video thank you. I might even try quilting on my lap.

PS I too like a big needle. I"ve tried loads but have now settled on sashiko needles. They have the length but aren't too thick in diameter and they have a big eye for size 8 thread.

I sometime do a combination of machine and hand quilting. The machine quilting secure the layers and i then add decorative hand quilting in the larger areas. Beautiful video and quilt!

Thanks for the hand quilting demo. I will have a go at it. I do my spray basting vertically on a wall. Duct tape the back to the wall, spray, smooth out the batt to the back, spray, smooth out the top. Remove any wrinkles and keep smoothing until you are satisfied. Carefully remove tape and quilt sandwich from the wall. If you are using natural fiber batt, you can now iron the sandwich for extra adherence. Thanks for the video Rachel.

Hi Rachel, I'm catching up on your videos & just wanted to mention that whilst making my Daisy & Grace QAYG blocks (300 or so in !) I ran out of Guttermann for the invisible stitching &, as I couldn't get hold of any more Guttermann, I had to order "Coats and clark hand quilting cotton thread 350 yards" & it's amazing. You get more for your money & the thread is finer & yet just as stiff. Btw, merci beaucoup for the masking tape tip xxxxx

I quilt the way you quilt, but I make my stitches about eight to the inch. I also use the eye of the needle to go in for that first stitch because the needle goes in between the fabric threads rather than through the fabric thread, that way it is easier to get the knot to pop when using a thicker thread. I do the same to pop the thread at the end.

I, too, baste my quilt on my bed. I liked your idea to remove all the bedding before spreading out the backing, wadding (in America we call it batting...) and the top. I will try this the next time I layer a quilt. One suggestion you might find helpful - I thread numerous needles onto the thread spool at one time so that I can easily draw out the thread and have a needle ready to go once I cut the thread. I like to use a hoop on a stand. Thank you for the demonstration! I'm glad quilters are using hand quilting. I get very tired of seeing so many people using a quilting machine.

I only hand quilt as well. Making a king for my grandson using quilt as you go. It's so much easier quilting the blocks together. I use my ironing board when it gets larger and makes it so much easier to quilt. You just put the heavier part over the ironing board and I quilt as you do. Enjoyed your video

I love to hand quilt and I love the look of it! Unfortunately I have such severe arthritis in my hands that I’m not able to do the whole quilt now. So most of the quilt is done on the machine but I do leave open spaces for hand quilting. It’s a trade-off! Your quilt is gorgeous!

Your quilt is beautiful! I love your needle book, too! I'm going to make one with some hexie diamonds I've made. Thanks for the link for the video for that. Quilting on my lap or on my utiltiy table is more to my comfort. I have tried frames and hoops. My hubby even made an adjustable frame, out of the temporary steps we had while building our home. It has sentimental value, but I just couldn't make it work for my quilting for very long very long. I use crochet thread and a crewel needle to quilt with, so I don't worry about short stitches. I also pinstitch, and put them close enough together in the middle of the pieces, since I tend to quilt like you do, even though I'm a lefty. Love you helper popping in at the end.💕

My big quilts go to the long arm quilter at great cost. However, my favourite quilts have always been hand quilted. I have never attempted to do it because I thought it was too complex for me. I have never hand quilted, but I recently bought a hand pieced quilt top that is begging for hand stitched quilting! It has a diagonal motif across the whole top that I may machine quilt in the ditch, and then there is curved piecing in each diagonal section that I’d like to follow with a combination of Pearl 8 and finer thread. Your basting tips will also help me for this. (Bed basting? Genius!) This video showed me so much, and gives me hope that I can achieve my vision, even as a beginner. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Thank you for a great quilt. I have also basted on a carpeted floor but use T pins to secure the quilt. I find these give a good taught back and are more secure than tape. I got a mixed pack from Amazon. Your quilt will be beautiful when it is finished. Enjoy the process.

Do give the pool noodles method a try on a folding table, which entails rolling each layer, back, batting and quilt top on pool needles and pin them into the foam of the noodle. Then simply unroll a couple of feet towards you and pin, pushing against noodles to keep everything taut. Keep pinning and unrolling until all done. Saves the back and gives good smooth backing. There is a video from a few years ago but can’t recall who showed it. Love the quilt, so pretty.

I do my quilts exactly like you do. I find that any small bubbles on the back even out in the wash. I do spray and pin though so it's minimal. I love hand quilting like this. Great tutorial ❤

Rachel the quilt you're working on is so pretty, love all the colorful patterned material and the design. What is the name of the design, I've practiced the log cabin designs in my quilts for family and made lots of random patterened quilts. It would be nice to complete a quilt with a specific pattern, I like the pattern you have used. I like both hand and machine stitching, depends on the circumstances at the time and how soon I need to have the project finished. I have a quilt that was hand sewed by my great-grandma and maybe my great-great grandma, aunts, cousins, etc. Would be so nice if there was a photo of them sewing it, with descriptions of who was who; and some details about the material used and such, anyway. I am happy to have been given the quilt by my cousin.

I like using a hoop for hand quilting & find if I put the hoop on so the quilt is quite taught then press my hand in the middle it gives jus the right amount of looseness for hand quilting. I am like you, I don't feel comfortable with hoops to hand quilt. I hand quilt exactly the way you show. I even make up my designs on my squares to hand quilt. My go to for that is finding coloring pages and turn them into templates for designs. I have only been quilting since 2013 and lost count on how many things I have done for gifts or donations.

Thanks for this video, Rachel! When I saw the pins in your quilt last time, I didn't realize that you had also spray basted -- that would help a bit more for sure. I have never spray basted; I have used fusible powder, but it made the quilt too stiff and it was messy so would not do that again. Thanks for sharing the needle info, too; I like using Clover applique needles for quilting, but do want to try some more in case another suits me better. Blessings!

Hi! Just a word about that big knot. Try wrapping just 2 maybe 3 times around the needle. Your quilt will appreciate not having holes in it after all of that work. Move the needle around gently in the wadding to bury it and try not to pull the buried needle so hard. It should pop yes but not tear. It can be heart breaking to have a damaged quilt and this one is stunning. Btw ..the smaller the betweens needles the easier it is to stitch. It's what the Amish women use to create their gorgeous well known quilts. Happy stitching 🧵🪡
