Why'd you decide to stick with the 4L60e? Seems like most just drop in the 4L80's

It was a big debate going 60e or 80e. Ultimately for me it’s because the price to build this 60e to reliably take the same (if not a little more) power a stock 80e could take was pretty much the same price if not a little less as doing a 80e swap. It was just easier this way to be honest. Plus I have peace of mind knowing this trans is fresh and not been in a work truck for 300k miles lol.

@@Armitronwr330 I don't believe that there is any way you could build a 60 to handle what a stock 80 will and if so it would cost a lot more but I hope it last for you

@@frenchfrysz6695 No, the exact opposite actually. The 1st to 2nd gear RPM drop is more dramatic in the TH-700R4/4L6x-E family vs the TH400/4L8x-E. Typically it means leaving 1st and going into 2nd gear below peak torque production in the power curve instead of right on top of it. While the TH400/4L8x-E has a more predictable RPM change through the gears. You can hear it in a lot of "cammed ls" videos on youtube with the 4L60E. One look at the gear ratios explains it all. To compensate for the RPM drop in 1st to 2nd, people with 4L60/65/70 etc will overrev slightly in 1st so that 2nd has an optimum start in the power band. Which I think is silly, if it can rev that high in 1st and make good power than you'd want it to do that through every gear. But most of the time it's surpassed peak power in the curve and is starting to fall off.

Did you use stock length pushrods or aftermarket 7.4"? Just curious im using one of the elgin sloppy cams on a stock ls1 and was curious if stock pushrod length was correct.
@Videos-ch2qm
@Videos-ch2qm 2 жыл бұрын
i used 7.4 chromoly prushrods the base circle on that cam is slightly smaller then stock so it requires that bit of length in the longer push rod to compensate plus that bit of extra preload on the lifter is good too helping to keep it from floating at high rpm

@@Videos-ch2qm Did you get the ebay advertised sloppy stage 2 that has a smaller base circle or the elgin 1840 cam? Elgin told me the 1800 series cams were on the stock base circle so stock pushrods work or 7.4" for the extra .007" lash or preload. I only ask as i went with the 1839 from them with the stock pushrods they said were 7.393" and changed to 7.4" a week later.

Most people opt out of the TB converters because the mentality is that the more they spend the better off they are but for a mild build its a solid choice and as you mentioned cheap too. For my SS Circle D kept trying to upsell me to a $1200 unit because the 275mm was ONLY rated to 650whp, i was like shit im NA so unless i stroke i doubt i will ever touch 600whp so im good

Did it stall alot with the stock converter? I'm in the process of doing a dod delete and don't want to put in the stock cam, these sloppys are cheap upgrades while in in their. I can't afford a higher converter yet but don't want to buy parts twice. So I was going to get the camber and stall soon of it will run with the stock to drive to work

@@PappyDan yes I did, hence the lower-ish stall. Wanted the least amount of stall possible to get this cam where it wanted to be with 4.10s ideally. It’s obviously still lazy down low with stock 3.42s on 33 inch tires but once it has 4.10s that should accommodate. I also didn’t want a super loose converter without lockup in my daily that I tow with… save the 4000 stall for my G-Body.

When I see the words "built" associated with a 4L60E I immediately think of a moped with racing stickers stuck all over it.. those long smoky burnouts do wonders on the 1-2 shift... The band and reverse input drum are not long for this world.. neither is the 3-4 clutch pack. A 4L80E will be in his future... the very near future.. whoever told him a 4L60e will handle that type of abuse, and then took his money-really took advantage of him. They both lied to him, and stole his money. He will figure it out soon enough. When you are ready for a 4L80E that is built RIGHT and will probably cost less than the 4L60 you have now... send me a message..
@Armitronwr330

Had this transmission built buy the same friend who has built trans for my race cars, or rebuilt all of my stock transmissions over the years and I have absolutely no complaints. The stock 4L60e did not last in this truck with pretty minimal abuse and only 130k on it. The trans you see in the video has been in the truck for about a year now. In that year it has seen countless burnouts, highway pulls, towing, hauling, and everything else bad you can do to a trans and I have not had a SINGLE issue out of it. You have to remember this truck makes a whopping 400hp (maybe). I don’t see how you can say I was taken advantage of in this case especially considering the trans was built at the price of the parts… reinforced sunshell, billet over run piston, heavy duty 3-4 clutch pack, front and rear 5 pinion planetary, wide 2-4 band, sleeved input drum, wide double caged 29 element sprag, shift kit, vette servo, new solenoids and more that I’m forgetting. Well overbuilt for a tiny NA 4.8 and a whole hell of a lot easier than sourcing and swapping a 80e. If this was a turbo truck or was just making gobs of power I’d be in agreement with you.. but it isn’t. Only person that stole my money was Summit Racing lol.

4l80e is overkill for a mild 5.3, you'd probably lose power at the wheels
@Go69
@Go69 Жыл бұрын
@@r3tr0sp3ct3r Yes, you are correct-it does take more hp to turn the 4l80E and he will have less horsepower at the rear wheels after he swaps. However you are missing the bigger picture.. Will you care about that loss of a few horsepower when the vehicle is dead nuts reliable? If you could abuse the snot out of it every single day, but still jump in it and drive cross country with no fear of being broken down along the way... would you make that trade? With the money you SAVE swapping to a 4L80e you can then invest that savings into ported heads, or a FAST intake, or a cam swap to make up for that lost HP. Here's what I mean when I say "money saved". How many times will you rebuild your 4L60e before you give up and switch to the 4L80? Add up what it costs to keep a 4L60E running over say, 5 years, then compare that to what it would have cost you to run the 4L80E. In the long run, it is ALWAYS a smarter move to go to the more reliable transmission as soon as possible and stop the financial bleeding that occurs attempting to keep a humpty-Dumpty 60E up and running. Do I think a 60E can be made to work for a while? Sure. When the gearing is matched to the tire size, when there is sufficient cooling (LARGE external cooler), when it's tuned right, and when the trans is built right... How often do you see vehicles THAT dialed in though? It's like a unicorn in the wild-it's possible but YOU are not going to see one in your lifetime. Most guys have NO CLUE how to set up a 60E trans to survive as they don't get the BIG PICTURE. In those cases where the complete system is not optimal-the 4L80E will carry the load and not fail. A 60E is NOT going to take a lot of abuse and just keep happily plodding along. There are thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of stories out there already detailing all the weaknesses inherent to the 60E design and ultimate failure. Just look at how the two transmissions are engineered and you will see why the 80E IS THE CORRECT ANSWER for longevity, reliability, ability to withstand abuse, etc;
