Nothing wrong with it being auto. In fact, in a drag race, auto beats manual in all cases (as there's no drop in rpm between shifts so the boost is consistent throughout). Fanboys and elitists circle jerk the whole manual transmission, when it's only good for manually selecting gears.

heres some facts: the supra is not a tuner car, it is a high end sports car. a tuner car is a honda or the such. never seen a street racer with an automatic eh? strange how most Chargers (69s or so) or many other muscle cars came with automatics. also pro street drag car owners/racers are not true racers eh accoding to you rice boy? because most have chevy th400s, lencos, or other 2 speed automatic transmissions the only person that has a lot to learn here is you.

The big advantage of the automatic transmission toyota used in the supra is: there are thousands of them. The 6-speed gearbox (afair mady by Getrag) was only used in the MK4 Turbo and is relatively rare and expensive.

@PD19954 what i was talking about was the chirp made by the blow off valve. you can hear it in manuals because the driver lets off the gas when they shift. in an automatic though, the throttle is wide open because the driver doesnt have to shift

Turbo supras are twin-turbo. When tuned a lot of people go for the single turbo option, lots of lag but a huge pile of boost.

@PD19954 When did I ever say that those cars used a dual clutch transmission? All I said was that this supra most likely is just a regular street automatic, and that dragster cars (that is, performance cars like lambos and that bugatti you mentioned) use the dual-clutch transmission. And by "shitload" I obviously meant "substantial", by hyperbole. It's a significant loss; the bands are prone to slippage and the torque converter prevents the power from being applied all at once.

You can never beat an automatic when both cars are the same spec. You will always lose time shifting no matter how good you are, and automatics always stay in boost unlike manuals where you lose boost as soon as you hit the clutch.

Actually, automatics and turbos work well together. The automatic doesn't release during gear changes as a clutch does. This keeps the turbo spooled up better.

@matthewrockslol22 It is a 4 speed auto, D actually stands for Overdrive(4th gear), you press a button on the shifter to turn overdrive off (so it stays in 3rd), 2 is 2nd gear, L is 1st. That way you can manually hold/shift gears; all automatics have this in some form.

you are right on the full boost shifts, the auto looses quite a bit LESS boost per shift with a no lift full throttle shift into the next gear, ecu automatically pulls timing up to to be nice to your sprags and valvebody but no lift on shift means the turbos can stay in their groove

@quatroportte so if i understand corretly your problem is the clutch, but a sequential gearbox still has a clutch to allow you to start in the first gear, a stick to shift gears and you have to use your hand for that, anyways if you dont mind about lower shifting speeds and lower performance be my guest, cheers

furthermore, the supra TT uses a sequential turbo set up. I'm not sure of the sizes of each, but it's got a much wider powerband than a stock single turbo car with a similar size turbo. Most ECU tunes will take the boost up to about 18 psi on the stock turbo or 10-12 psi higher than stock, so yeah, it is feasible to get in the 500hp range with very little modification, intake exhaust retune injectors. 600+ is nothing more than +turboswap and fmic.

@quatroportte what you dont seem to understand sir is that a car with an H patern gearbox which is the most commonly used in cars nowdays can be faster to shift than an automatic gearbox, plus its smaller, lighter , and doesnt not consume power from the engine to run the oil pump i mentioned in my earlier message. perhaps the greatest advantage of the H gearbox is that its more durable in brutal driving (downshifting, upshifting ect) and that you get to change gear when YOU like,

It all depends on personal preference some might like auto and some might like manual. It also depends on what the car is being used for. For drag racing auto seems to have the upper hand and in road racing manual has the upper hand.

@quatroportte these supercars you mention have sequential gearbox which is complex and expensive, automatic gearboxes are slow shifters and consume power from the input shaft to produce pressure to the disks that engage each gear, plantary gearboxes however,use brakes to engage different gears ,however i favor the H pattern gearbox cause they are durable, cheap to replace mostly and if you know how to shift you can go very fast around a track, automatic is good for highway drive and old people
