In this video, we go and buy the hybrid bluegills for our pond. We learned a little about hybrid bluegill and the care of them. The kids helped us along the way.

A little word of advice for your pond keep duckweed float on the surface of your pound give a lot of sprouts and take out nitrates help out with evaporation and mosquitos can't lay their eggs through the the duckweed

We have a bunch of warmouth and bluegill, and I do believe they have been breeding together. They have created a warmouth with blue gills and cheeks, they are tall and short like a bluegill with warmouth stripes and a massive mouth. Almost like a redear but with a warmouth's skin. It's pretty cool.

should've set the buckets in the pond for at least half an hour to let the temp equalize before you poured the fish in so it didn't shock them. Also getting a bigger bin and adding some of the water in to get them used to it is always a wise idea.

after 3 or 4 generations of breeding, you'll wind up with regular blue gill and green sunfish in your pond. they revert back to their original DNA. add a diffuser to that little pond and you can have as many as you want in there.

@TheNealsHomestead7 жыл бұрын
Living Traditions Homestead, The pond we put the fish in is small, only about 200x300 ft, and 8 ft deep. This pond has no other fish in it and our idea is to let the babies grow and then transfer them to a larger pond, just over the dam of this one. we have another video showing the construction. thanks for watching

Add some of your pond water to the buckets before releasing the fish. U should've dumped out about 1/2 the bucket water so you had room to add your pond water. Add in pond water slowly to get temp in bucket matching temp in pond.

I like how his says new pond put yet the pond looks like its been there 30 years
@TheNealsHomestead7 жыл бұрын
The pond is newly rebuilt, we had drained it several years ago to build a larger lake below it. The pond had likely been there for 30 years before we drained it, but it's "new" in the sense that it was empty of fish, freshly filled and with a new dam. We actually have a few videos on our channel detailing the building of the dam if you would like to check them out. Thanks for watching!

Maceon McCutcheon - I think that they could get as big as 2+ pounds. It also depends on the conditions they grow in, such as, how much food they have, and etc.

Don't you think the can also be invasive species for the other fish??
@TheNealsHomestead6 жыл бұрын
+RaNdOm KiD I don't think these are likely to be an invasive species for us, they have a very low rate of reproduction, and there are already bluegill and bass well established in the larger lake
@TheNealsHomestead6 жыл бұрын
+RaNdOm KiD The hybrid bluegill cane out 80 to 90% male. That limits their extensive reproduction.

Arent most hybrid fish really hard to keep alive? In my experience it is so. Not mine personally. Have seen the problems with 'best of x and best of y = best of neither in reality.' In fact ive seen some real cruelty in fish breeding. As per your notes, if your children are your fish breeding advisors, how's that going?
