To answer the question I'd say generally shared pathway are a bad idea. They are just too dangerous for both cyclists and pedestrians unless you cycle very slowly (

No I don't encourage shared paths, but I am happy to use them if a cycle lane is not provided because its safer than risking life and limb with 40MPH HGV's and last minute van drivers. The issue with shared cycle paths is that police/pedestrians/cyclist NEVER know when it is shared or NOT shared. Often you get 1 or 2 signs and that's it and it makes the rest of the countries footpaths VERY confusing.

There better than nothing. I encounter this route regularly. The dogs on thin 20ft leads that you cant see I find the worst thing to avoid, particularly if the owners have earphones in. If you use the seperate cycling lane in rusholme its just as bad. A particular favourite of mums and prams, but the walking dead like stepping out into them also. Wish I knew a answer. Ride 5 mph on cycle lanes/ paths or get abused my car drivers.

Let's remember what a shared path actually is- a footpath that cyclists are permitted to use. I understand the frustration of cyclists in regard to dogs, walkers and runners but you are "on their territory", not they on yours. If you want unimpeded progress, don't use shared paths are you are simply not entitled to expect everyone to get out your way.
