STOCKSBRIDGE: Sheffield Parish #2 of 3

In the steep-sided valley of the Little Don River, below the Underbank Reservoir, we find the second parish - a town - in the City of Sheffield. This one blends into the areas of Deepcar, Bolsterstone and the eastern end of Ewden valley around Ewden village, which are also within the civil parish boundaries.
There are several ghost stories attached to the town’s bypass here, including reputed apparitions of a monk and phantom children during the road's construction. These claims were featured in a 1994 episode of the paranormal documentary series “Strange but True?”
Until the early 18th century, this was a deciduously wooded valley, running from Midhopestones at its Northwestern extremity to Deepcar at its Southeastern end. A river, originally called the Hunshelf Water and later renamed the Little Don, is responsible for this town’s name.
In 1716 John Stocks, a local farmer and landowner, occupied a fulling mill halfway along the valley where a flood plain, created by meltwater at the end of the last ice age, extended southwest from the river. Here he reputedly built a footbridge over the river, perhaps so that his workforce could reach the mill from their homes on the north side.
This originally wooden structure was named Stocks' Bridge, which has kind of stuck around. A man named Samuel Fox and the steelworks he would own in this valley would do the rest. This is STOCKSBRIDGE.

STOCKSBRIDGE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: - Stocksbridge College of Further Education on Hole House Lane was used to train steelworkers. It was opened by PM Harold Wilson in 1967, later to become the site of Stocksbridge Co-op. - Stocksbridge is campaigning to get the railway line opened to passenger traffic as the (mis-named) 'Upper Don Railway.' - The West end of the town has Christ Church United Church which is a community church and The Venue, home to Steel Valley Beacon

Bolsterstone Bolsterstone called me to itself. I walked its lanes, slept in its fields. Peace. Balm poured freely for a restless soul by a wide expanse of water. Now still; now cascading in great agitation over crag-like falls. I walked its lanes, slept in its fields. Calm. I felt that we were one. What purpose here? What history, that I should feel so strong? Was dear, lost Nathaniel calling me along? I walked its lanes, slept in its fields. Love. I felt my soul release to melodic, rich cadences. A heavenly earth choir at peace. I hugged Nathaniel’s pillow, shedding tears as Midnight passed. You have found me through the ages and I am home at last. Rachel (c) 2019. My great- great grandparents - Nathaniel & his wife are buried in Bolsterstone churchyard. I was born and brought up in Deepcar. As a child I used to walk all the lanes around Bolsterstone and Ewden Dam. My family live in Stocksbridge. My heart is very much still in this area. Finding your video has made my day…….and you probably wouldn’t know it, but the ‘midnight’ I refer to in my poem, was the nickname given to one of the local gravediggers.

I always enjoy your tours and learn a lot but I was disappointed in Stocksbridge. You ignored the West end of the town with Christ Church United Church which is a community church and The Venue, home to Steel Valley Beacon. instead we had a long drive round Deepcar houses.

Ah don''t worry, that's what roundups are for. I can use that info! You can pretty much guarantee if I'd have gone there instead of Deepcar, someone from Deepcar end would have said the same thing about not covering it. Swings and roundabouts haha

anybody see the ufo tonight. At 7.20 it came over me silent ..I can see from walkley over to high bradfield. It covered that distance in 4 seconds...I reckon 8 miles.

No but saw ET and Elliot riding on Stocksbridge bypass. Took them 15 mins start to finish. Not sure where Elliot’s hand was though, ET had a really strange look going on
