@sayalime46203 жыл бұрын
@@zeph6439 I believe you are confusing the difference between karma and social logic. It is true that if someone became a criminal, for example and started hurting people, it is very likely that they will get hurt themselves but this is not guaranteed. There are many people in this world who have successfully committed genocides and other human atrocities and have gotten away with it, hence the universe remains indifferent to our actions, it does not strike out simply because we have done 'good' or 'bad' since the very concept of good and bad are subjectively defined by different societies. A true stoic would not even mentioned karma as it is similar as relying on the claim of a God that dictates the moral compass of universe. If your argument is that we are in control of what happens to us then this is also not a stoic perception; we shoot the arrow from the bow and hope it lands where we want it, but where it lands on is out of our control. Bad things and good things can happen to cruel and kind people. From your response I can tell you may be transitioning to be a stoic so I would advice you to do more research, you will find your way sir.
@zeph64393 жыл бұрын
@@sayalime4620 I never once hinted that I was a stoic. Change, like love, is a universal constant. There is no real point in being hard and rigid....in this sense, stoic. The problem with some people is that when they have been taught that a particular way is the only right one, then it follows that to them, every other path is wrong. This absolutist thinking leads to conflict and divisions between folks who ought to like each other, but don't. You said ~ "A true stoic would not even mentioned karma as it is similar as relying on the claim of a God that dictates the moral compass of universe." The meaning of Karma is simply, "Action". As change is a constant, and nothing stays the same, I suggest that stoicism being as hard as a rock in a stream, will last regarding any particular thing for a while, but will eventually be worn away completely by the gentle, soft action of the flowing water of that stream. Actually, there's nothing better at dissolving hard things like water. Love, which unlike hate and fear-based things is indigenous to the human heart, is also a constant that's really worth exploring, in my humble opinion

Some things do affect a person's mental health. Imo that line is so shallow that it somewhat promotes dissociation from emotion or belittling the value of emotions as a result of whatever transpired. I have to disagree on the stance that you should not retaliate to physical violence. You can't have a good modicum of self-respect if you let people go as far as harming your physical integrity without repercussions. When someone is taunting you to the level of physical violence, you are being preyed upon, and from personal experience the correct reaction is to overwhelm them with a credible threat or, as a last resort, to strike them in a way that makes them unable to fight back (thumb in the eyeball, kick to the nuts or even something more drastic); you are not looking for a fight, you are looking to remove the threat of a potential predator: to survive, roughly speaking. That's why, if it comes that, you don't fight fair (or rather, you don't fight at all, you simply go about removing the threat by any means necessary). The real problem comes with the legal system and misguided societal rejection of justified violence, which is something I find particularly repulsive, you can be punished for simply defending your right to exist. Violence is part of reality, we can't escape it, but we can train ourselves to be ready for it.
@Einzelgänger5 жыл бұрын
I think it really depends on the situation. "you are looking to remove the threat of a potential predator: to survive, roughly speaking." This is where it all comes down to, I think. Like I said near the ending; "when our life is in danger, striking down our enemy is justified." If someone keeps taunting you.. I think, at some point, delivering a corrective punch is justified.
@JoeMama-gt9jg5 жыл бұрын
Agreed, I will let a person say almost anything to me. I don't really care what someone thinks or says about me. Physical violence is different. You can't just let someone try to injure you physically. You have to defend yourself or get away depending on the situation. If you can't win it's better to escape unharmed. Wounded pride is better than being injured or worse.

Einzelganger, I watched the video in the entirety and now, I know I am not alone. Eloquent or stylish conversation is an art form the English once did practice and nurture in women it was well thought of as very talented and they taught others around them . And it seems as though many folks have not aquired the skillfulness of talking "well" , or have been learned, or introduce properly to the art form of conversation. It was once considered a class-ism if a person opened their mouth and they "SPOKE WELL" . I think we see many people esp. in America they have a bit of a rude way of opening up and approaching when speaking to or commenting or texting another they barely are familiar with . There are rules to having a "good talk" with the familiar and the unfamiliar and there are styles and mannerisms that help the conversation. The art of voice inflection, expression ,choice of words ,pausing patiently and conversation topics and subjects and so forth. Thank you for addressing this complexed topic of communication in this point of our history . And, oh,Enzelganger , I do adore your voice and tone. It was delivered in a very fine way. Also if you try to walk away from the attack or ask why they're doing it, it makes them angrier and say that I'm causing the issue even though I'm trying to stay away from it. Any insult Reply with: "And how does that make you feel, *their name*?" in a very passive and examining voice like you're their counsellor If someone wants to get an reaction out of you might as well pull the reverse uno card amirite

How about the man who insults you often yet refuses to own up to it? Hard to maintain love when being insulted so much.

Dats good and all for everyday little insults that you should not spend energy fighting back , but for real insults as Mike Tyson said: "everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face"

I have found quite the opposite to be true. The times when I have not fired back, in kind, with an insult are the times I look back upon with disappointment.

I agree. Being honest with your feelings is the best you can do for yourself. It prevents the formation of resentment which builds up over time. Up to this day I still ask myself why I didn’t defend myself that one day someone tried to insult me in front of other people. I should have said some words. I should have been kinder to myself and not let someone disrespect me like that. Instead, I stayed silent and brushed it off as nothing. The resentment grew and I exploded one day. I exploded in a way that there’s no turning back. If I just said a word that time the insult was given, I may have saved myself from 2 years of resentment and the eventual explosion of my anger.
@prima61703 жыл бұрын
@@kcx2678 I've found that not responding makes you, or can make you, look weak. We still punch people in the face these days, we just do it verbally. For my part, I'll take one or two punches, but then I'm punching back. And, you're right, not responding causes pent up anguish.

I admire witty people, especially witty sarcasm, which is the British way. I was walking around the supermarket when I accidently clashed trolleys with a woman coming the other way. "Sorry", I said, "I'm looking for the teabags". She looked me up and down and said: "Don't you mean the clothing department?". I laughed my arse off.

I would go one step further and say that based on the intent of the insult, the context (in public), etc., it is on occasion better not only to abstain from being provoked and stepping away, but also quietly and calmly expelling the insulter from one's circle of associates. Anyone who assumes the right to insult is a toxic presence, and I have no obligation to accommodate this person.

A scattered mind is susceptible to negatively reacting to slights, indifference, insults and perceived injustice. Yes you are correct we should not expect a perfect life mostly as you say because other people will not provide it for us.

When you are put down by family members or parents, and you just take it and never do anything, let's just say I don't think that's the solution, to do nothing. It really sucks to be insulted by family members, and feel like garbage, and it's not your fault. Some people just get satisfaction from putting people down, and when it's someone close to you, and you're the one they are putting down, I don't know what the solution is, or how to make them stop.

I believe that we should never allow someone to disrespect us or take advantage of us. If we do not, they will continue to do both. People treat us the way we allow them to treat us. One way to do this is to flip it back on them in an unexpected, non seige type of response that protects your authentic self and to maintain and enforce boundaries.
@jenna24314 жыл бұрын
My favorite response to an insult: "You could be right." Which maybe they are. Or maybe they're not. In any case, I have agreed with them so they have to be more favorably disposed toward me. Or not. Doesn't matter. The very least it does is to throw the person off because that's not what they expected. They now have to think of their next move instead of play out their own outrage or whatever in their accustomed manner. It breaks the cycle.

Remember, that what is insulting is not the person who abuses you or hits you, but the judgment about them that they are insulting.

I think lots of people have anger and resentment just below their surfaces, and a slight or insult is like popping a balloon - they just explode. This is possibly the basis of road rage, for example. It can be hard to control.

Awesome video. enjoy the content. If someone says something to hurt you, just gotta remember what they say to you is a reflection of themself back onto you. It means nothing about you as a person. And as long as you believe in yourself and that all things said are untrue then they will be untrue. Words are meaningless. Don't waste time on those; who don't build you and grow you. At same time, some criticism is good and helps you grow too, but only as long as it serves your needs. If its just nitpicking or meaningless petty insults then you should most definitely ignore them.

Thank you, I want to just spit venom to these people at work and stoop to a level that I’m not comfortable with. I really like the quote about a lion not caring about the opinions of sheep. It’s honestly not really stoic but it helps me be proud of who I am and to understand that what these people are saying is much more a reflection on their own character and less an insult to myself.

I think one needs more of a balance. Conflict is an essential part of life. Knowing when to walk away and NOT to walk away is key. If you keep on avoiding conflict you become a doormat and that Sir, is another problem. You might not always win the fight but facing conflict is KEY.
