Although some of what you said is true, Rob Key has nowhere the cricket knowledge at test level as Andrew Strauss, who captained England for so many years and took the team to number 1. It’s a strongish appointment and much better than Giles, but it won’t make England number 1 again. England need the best coach, if they could get someone like Ponting that could really change things. Rob Key has good county knowledge, maybe bring better players through. Overall they lack the player depth, like South Africa and need better batsmen. Australia always seem to have the next best fast bowler and even odd batsman.

Gee, listening back to this interview now, Key really did hit the nail on the head. Talking about - not worried as much about wins and losses, its more the brand of cricket we play - and - we have to win over the young generation and not just expect people to fall in love with the game - . He picked stokes and mccullum. All three of them share the same mindset and its inspiring to see how a clear vision, honest leadership and buy in from the players and now the country can transform a team of underacheivers into the most exciting and maybe the most revolutionary team in my memory. Its an amazing feat to win a test match, but the way these lot win games by committing all in on unprecedented plans and pull them off make their wins more extraordinary than others. Its one thing to play aggressive in a 20/20 or and ODI, but to keep to this incredible attacking plan over 5 days with all the ebbs and flows of a test match requires untold faith in one another and real strength of character. Win or lose, long may it continue.

A very good interview that many a politician could learn from for his honesty. I hope that Brendan McCullum is a success, an inspired appointment. Slightly more controversially I don't think either Anderson or Broad should be playing test cricket. Not that they don't deserve their places but they should have been bowled into the ground. We would have won more tests if they had bowled until they got injured or knackered. Resting bowlers has been the most flawed policy of recent times. Yes leave a bowler out if the conditions don't suit, but in the main keep them bowling. I would rather have seen Jimmy playing the same number of tests but retiring at 35 than extending his career by 'resting' him. You can't say that Woods, Archer and Stone have been over bowled. If quick bowlers spent more time in the nets and out in the middle rather than lifting weights in the gym I don't think they would brake down as often as my Dad's old Austin Metro. Forgive me, I'm on a roll here. As for white ball cricket. Give the coach's job to Collingwood for 12 months and then offer the job to Morgan when he retires. And ask him to keep his kit in the car.

Surprising to hear positive comments about pitches. At Chelmsford, every game has been a draw, with not even three innings completed. Some days only 2 or 3 wickets fell ALL DAY. Even after batting collapses it has still been a draw. There has to be more in it for bowlers or it's simply not a fair competition. Im a die Pakistan Cricket supporter but you just want Key to do well. The way he speaks, his ideas and importantly the honesty he brings to the table is what you expect would carry him through! Wont be easy since Eng doesnt have bsst of test sides at the minute but I dont know, I just think he has enough acumen to do a decent job for Eng!

I hope so because he always seems genuine. It would have been very easy for him to keep his lucrative and no stress Sky job, but he is sticking his neck out to try to improve England's fortunes.

He seemed to answer his own question about who selects the team. A group of people who can debate the team then vote. Why look any further than his old colleagues, former England captains Atherton and Hussain along with Stokes and himself. Atherton and Hussain have both basically been in the job before and watch every single England game. They could be part-time appointments.

Rob Key is an excellent choice. Balanced approach, so pragmatic. He'll be great for the English game.

Rob Key sounds like Nasser Husain. Nasser Husain sounds like Rob Key.

Rob comes across down to earth and common sense, thank goodness in todays world of insanity and wokeness. Best of luck to you Rob!

Rob Key oozes wisdom. All though he didn't fulfil his potential with England as a player, I do think he will excel as director. Now go and get Ricky Ponting!

I don't think Punter wants one of these jobs.

I certainly agree that Rob Key has authority on the subject and may have the correct, forensic approach to decision making. We shall see, but I agree, a good appointment, to follow Strauss, the outstanding candidate in his position, really. So question, Rob: based on early season form, a certain Sir Alistair Cook nearing the top of the run charts, seen three centuries of his within a month. An England recall for Chef? Goodness knows, we need some stability in our test team opening partnership

Yeah start bringing back retired players like Cook. More backwards thinking.

gotta admit, not a Key fan at all, did think there was such a lack of alternatives that he got the job. However, listening to this, I've changed my opinion, really hope it goes well.........let's face it, can't be worse on the Test front, which for me is more important....probably in a minority now!

Respect to Key for so far sticking to being himself, hope being on the inside of an awful organisation like the ECB doesn't wear him down

The real reason key became managing director was for them free hundred tickets 😂😂

If Broad and Foakes played every test in the ashes, it would have been a lot closer. I was so happy as an Aussie to see no Broad in the first test.

Selection should be 3 man board of head selector coach and captain with head-selector with majority vote

Key would have had Warnie coaching England. Case of what might have been. Rip king

Anyway, Chris silverwood's rest and rotate (inform star players) policy cost England test team badly and root captaincy too.

Root was in Lara mode for last 2 years. Scored runs, captained the side but lost. Glad that Rob recognised the massive contribution Root has made under crisis.
