I learned to ski with a help of this and other videos on youtube, on 3rd day I was riding on blue trails, doing proper parallel turns. Also I noticed that many people who are skiing for years can't explain what exactly they're doing. This video is great!

A couple more hints / ideas. Be sure to start these exercises I am a very gentle flat slope. I find that many skiers who have actually skied several years can't do the first 2 or 3 top of your steps when they are going at a very controlled speed. But as they get going faster they get panicky and start to twist and start to Skid their skis to slow down. I picked up this carving technique back in the 70s in a book by Harold harb. And this was on what they would Now call straight skis". Of course that turns became long radius GS style turns. But they were and still are a blast. I tell my students, they paid a bunch of money for this new site cut technology. And turning the old-fashioned way by skidding the skis around it's a waste of money. Very good video by the way:-)

Actively engaging ankle and knee movement in your turn is going to cause you to be off balance either fore or aft especially at the final phase of your turn where you will end up seeing over rotation. Your knees and ankles will naturally flex throughout the turn, but to achieve a balanced position grip should come from the directional bend in the waist.

@kerrmcwilliam9060
@kerrmcwilliam9060 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, the space between the legs is important. I only touched on it during the basic position explanation. A hip width stance should be maintained almost everywhere when skiing. Adjustments are typically made when skiing powder, vaiaibles, short skidded turns and moguls where it may come narrower for increased surface area and agility. Thanks for you feedback.
@leevikeranen6435
@leevikeranen6435 6 жыл бұрын
The stance widens the deeper you go into turn.. Otherwise the inside ski starts to chew outside boot, and it pushes the outside ski up.. There are loads of other neat tricks to adjust the turn and advance it but this video kinda put the consensus of how to start going for carving turns.

As a total noob this is very helpful to understand the breakdown of the positioning throughout the turn. I’m finding it difficult to control my speed when going on edge rather than sliding at the end of each turn. Maybe that’s the point but it’s scary to a new skier!

More hip angulation required Note at 6:06 your inside knee is bent more then your outside, that is due to the lack of hip angulation. Keep the body vertical and angle the hips to the same angle as the skis are tilted over. That way both legs are the same distance from the snow to your hips and thus both knees will bent to the same angle through the turns. If they are not bent the same you are inducing rotation forcing you to have to swing your arms, you should be able to keep both hands in front of you at all times, as if you are carrying a small tray in front of you and not have to counter rotation. If you need to counter by swigging the arms that tells you that something else isn't right, and that is mostly lack of hip angulation. Loose the pole dragging habit completely, it is masking a rotation problem. In short if you need to use the force of your swinging arms to leverage the turns then the ski edges are not doing all the turning themselves and they should be if done right.
@samyeoski
@samyeoski 4 жыл бұрын
What are you talking about? The inside knee will always be bent more than your outside, especially during high speed carving turns. Just google image "ski racer" and tell me their inside knee is bent the same as the outside

For a carve it's a more tipping based movement with a lateral extension across the skis. The steering movements are passive and are dictated by the turning radius of the ski and your ability to drive (in the forceful sense) the ski

Thank you for the carving video. I ski many days at the week during the season and I like to advance to new styles and better technique, this is you helping me with. After practice this, especially the rolling ankles, and studied the video, I now have noticed that I can’t keep the basic position when I move down the hill. My feet and knees is twisting a lot to make the skies parallel in the basic position, and my knees is moving towards each other when I flex down, and not lengthwise the skies. This gives me a very locked position, and I can only force the uphill knee to move toward the snow. When not thinking about this new knowledge my skies end up in a very wide stance to make room for my knees to work. Last year I brought the Stomp It Tutorials to advance to jumping, and hit boxes, but every time I land a 50-50 on a slim box I slam the knees together, and landed like a steel-rod and not a nice spring like you, and my popping is good at home but terrible on skies. Now I know what happened. I need to go to the bootfitter again, and adjust my canting, or event get new boots allowing my feet to a more V-shape, to open up my knees, to align with the lengthwise axis of the ski. Thank you again. Maybe it’s because of my stance, but I have it very hard to go from switch to forward, at nearly any speed, maybe you can make some technique tips on that too. The Dane from Norway. :-)

@kerrmcwilliam9060
@kerrmcwilliam9060 6 жыл бұрын
Lange RX 130. It's the same shell as the Race boot, just a softer plastic. I like a 2 piece boot like this one as it's something I've tried and tested. I use it for everything from park to piste to powder. I like the fact that you get good support from the cuff and the position it allows on the skis. Boots are quite a specific piece of kit to the individual.
@TXT900
@TXT900 6 жыл бұрын
Kerr McWilliam I've always used Lange boots with 4 straps, I'm thinking of trying Dalbello's il Moro 3 piece 3 strap construction. Did you ever try something similar? If yes what made you stick to the 2 piece 4 straps construction. Thanks alot for the reply!
@kerrmcwilliam9060
@kerrmcwilliam9060 6 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried any 3 piece construction boots except for in the shop, never skied with them. I've used Salomon SPKs, and Atomic Waymakers before is the only other boots I've really skied. My reason for choosing a 2 piece boot is quite simply I always have and I like it and for that reason I've stuck with it. I find they ski better, but that's my opinion. Whatever works for the individual at the end of the day. I also run a BOOSTER strap rather than the stock one which I find enhances the boot and makes it more progressive.

Thank you TXT900, I'm glad you found them to be so. Ski boot choice is a tough one, but arguably the most important. Apologies if you knew what I'm about to say already but, try a variety of boots and find what works for your foot shape the best and it is very important to make sure you can flex the boot properly while being appropriate to your level of skiing (remembering a warm shop will make the plastic much softer compared to early/mid winter temperatures on the mountain!) Cheers

I'm a bit late but I was wondering how a centered stance on skis changes carving. If you're 'on your toes', it sometimes feels like the weight is too far forward (towards the nose).
@stevedoe1630
@stevedoe1630 5 жыл бұрын
ianyapxw Gravity wants to pull your body down the fall line. As long as you’re skiing in the forward direction, down the slope...the idea is to keep your weight harmonized with the natural forces of the world (i.e. gravity). If you want to see the complete opposite, weight shifted backwards, up the mountain (NOT forward, NOT down the mountain)...then check out “jet turns”. It was a fad, maybe 1970-1980’s. Essentially turning on the tails of the skis. People thought jet turns looked cool at the time, but nowadays the technique is considered poor / ugly / unsafe.

Poles do help for balance and stuff... but for a beginner skier, I dont think it matters all that much. If you prefer skiing without poles it is okay. but try to get used to them because they help. Just not use too long poles. That wont help at all

Some people make it look sick in the park and some make it look silly. If you are not into new wave park skiing keep the poles they increase your balance and they are practical to push yourself forwards.

I have tried both and both have their benefits and feel different. For skiing around I always ski with poles, they are an invaluable tool for balance and stability. I never used to ski with them in the park but now I do and have done so for the last 4/5 years. I still from time to time ditch the poles to mix it up in the park.
