I'm always amazed what you guys find on the way to the mines! That old engine, transmission and frame section driving the mill. All the Chinese labor building the roads. Chinese labor was key to building western rail systems back in the early days. Lots of history in regard to their hard work and unfortunately, their mistreatment. Nice cabin as well. All this beauty I will never see with my own eyes but I see it through your cameras. Thanks Tom and Julie for this!

I really like this channel above many others I have been watching for a long time. The reason i like this channel over others is because you have a keen ability to read the land so to speak. Also, you know the history. How many mines can you see guys run through and they tell you nothing, show you little and you learn nothing. I like mine videos a lot but I am glad I found this one. Eventually i will make it through your library.

Really enjoyed your video and to see what’s here, thanks! Funny story, back a while ago when we first started 4x4ing/hiking and on a budget, our crude gps was paper and pen, go so far, veer L or R etc..lol. We were looking for the Defense mine and ended up hiking up this canyon. Got to the spring, turned around and never did find the Defense mine. Sure wish we had hiked just a bit further to find this spot. Finally wised up a few months later and got to the Defense mine and many other destinations thereafter.

Thanks for your videos. One thing that stands out after exploring 3 mines in Santa Barbara. One was a surface chromium mine. The second was an open Mercury mine only a few miles from Quick Silver Mine by lake Gibraltar that has tailings flowing into Santa Barbara’s drinking reservoir.(no one talks about that), and the third mine, a deep one that works a mountain into a scary Swiss cheese, very unstable, I could not work out what mineral, that one unfortunately closed up tight. Now what got me is all the old rusted equipment is stamped MADE IN THE USA.
@TomandJulieMineExploring Жыл бұрын
There is a lot of high quality, grade A, made in the USA junk around the old mines. Back from the days that we actually made things ourselves. I don't know anything about the mines you mentioned. The road had been recently washed out so no Panamint City for me. Stayed overnight at Panamint Springs campground. Much smaller than today, Off grid. No Wilderness designation at that time. Darwin was of course the major mine. I believe there are tours at times. They have lights and trains. Very desolate. Interesting trip. Mansons ghost hung over the area. Glad that you've had the opportunity to see this area, Roger. The road to Cerro Gordo is not private. It continues past Cerro Gordo to Lee Flat and on to Saline Valley. Thanks for the comment!
@rogersmith7396 Жыл бұрын
@@TomandJulieMineExploring That is my general understanding. But that did'nt prevent the old owners from posting it as private. Bret has had the county do considerable work on the road. When I was there it was all about as abandoned as it could be. I understand there is a huge strip mine encroaching on his property. This is the dichotomy between the little old mines you explore and the modern billion dollar mines. Its why I doubt the old timers ever really made any money. Plus I was in a little Chevy and still don't know if 4 WD is necessary for Cerro Gordo. I've taken little rental cars to pretty interesting spots in CO. like Tomboy mine above Telluride. Tried to take my 50 year old street bike to Black Bear pass but blew a rod on a steep place. I've done Tincup Pass with it which is hairy. I am restoring it now. I would guess I could get the bike up to the salt tram beyond CG. Used to ride it daily up Engineer pass to go to Silverton. from Ouray. "Adventures with Christian" (no longer posting) works at a modern mine around Mercury NV. It is a full city with high school, football field, watered grass, supermarket, etc. It is a huge heap leach operation with literally mountains of tailings being acid washed. He is a welder there. You might imagine what this will be like when its abandoned. Or you can view the abandoned city In Canada, Kitmit or Kismet or something. Houses with power still on. Molybdenum mine I think. Congrats on your new subs!
@TomandJulieMineExploring Жыл бұрын
@@rogersmith7396 Thanks for all that information. I didn't notice any active strip mines in that area. I know the property is an odd shape so not exactly sure how it runs. There is an older open mine a couple miles past CG. You don't need a 4x4 to get to CG although if you plan on going further on you might want one.

Awesome video did you all ever bring meddle detectors with you to try to find some of what the old timers missed
@TomandJulieMineExploring Жыл бұрын
Thanks, Aaron. We don't do any metal detecting. The gold in the hard rock "lode" mines that we generally explore is super fine and requires the pay rock to be crushed and processed to get anything from it. Thanks for the comment!👍👍

Wow - that Stone Cabin is actually The Paul Imlay mining prospect. Nobody does that aggressive hike and We have been trying to find info on this for possibly an advanced 4wd route up there and OVER the Argus mountains - Thank You for this most informative video. Did you get any views of the rockfall just up the canyon from the cabin? That looks like our most formidable obstacle
@TomandJulieMineExploring Жыл бұрын
Hi Scotty, we didn’t go past the cabin in the main canyon. Just what you see in the video up the side canyon to the mine. While this was a road between Lookout City and Darwin back in the day, I believe this is now designated as wilderness where no mechanized travel is legally allowed. China Lake Naval Weapons Center is also blocking access to civilians, depending on what route you are trying to do. Thanks for the comment, and good luck with your route.👍😁

@@TomandJulieMineExploring You're right, I just looked and it is wilderness area and the Defense mine actually is a cutout and exception. I thought the whole area was open like the Defense Mine. I was wondering why there were no Jeep tracks up to the Paul Imlay Prospect, sure looked possible. Thank You.

I think that is a Willys engine, it's an 'F' head valve arrangement, 4 valves in the head and 4 in the block. OK, lets see what else you find.

I guess I should have looked a little closer at the engine. We have the "F" head in our '62 Willys Jeep. You didn't say you want to get this one running lol. Thanks, Mick!

One question, I may have missed it, what state? I just caught Darwin mentioned, so it's Death Valley? Great video though.

This is not Death Valley rather the opposite side of Panamint Valley from there. Glad that you enjoyed the video, Joe. Thanks for commenting!👍

You must be talking about one of the lower workings. The adit up above the cabin had a big steel door with "Keep Out" painted on it. Thanks for commenting, Rick!👍

You don't show any of your encounters with snakes or even rarely mention to be cautious of snakes. As a rule of thumb, if the lizards are out, the snakes are out. From all the pics of the desert in Blume I'm guessing most of your hikes are in the spring. Are you that lucky to not encounter snakes or do you deliberately edit them out? It seems that I must be a snake magnet. I always run into them when I'm out. I enjoy your pics of the wildlife you come across and would enjoy seeing the snakes too. I hope you two can continue to enjoy what you do so that we may come along with you on your adventures.

Hi Bill. We are out roaming the desert from mid-September until mid-May. We do see a few snakes in the fall not so much in the winter and spring. We don't see a large number, though. I think we have seen less than 10 in the last several years. We see lizards very often, much more so than snakes. Here is a link to a video where we saw a non poisonous Whip Snake if I remember correctly. kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4K1nat-Z8Rripo Thanks for watching and commenting!👍🐍
