Stone Cleaning and Maintenance: How to clean Venev, Matrix and other Resin Bonded Diamond Stones

Cleaning your Resin Bonded Diamond Stones is very important, they tend to glaze and load up very fast and if you don’t keep them clean you will lose cutting efficiency very quickly! This is how I keep them clean inbetween sharpening and deep clean when needed! I hope it helps!

A nagura stone is supposed to work really well, but I think it removes a bit of the binder at the same time so it might be more of a refresh instead of just a cleaning but not as extreme full lapping.

@@StropsandStones In regards to your Venves loading up, how wet do you keep them when sharpening, how heavy were you pressing, and how much use did it take to get them that loaded? I just sharpened a knife in 20CV with my new Venev stones earlier today using very little pressure. I kept them wet by dipping my fingers into a glass of water and adding a drop of water here and there and had no issues with loading. If I started to let them get dry then I immediately noticed they would start to load up. Not sure if it will help in the long run but I also rinsed them off in the sink right after finishing with a stone and rubbed them with my fingers under water and it removed any noticeable residue.

@@Riyame I just leave a light layer of water on top of the stone, maybe like 7-8 small drops and just keep it wet. I don’t believe you need to really use pressure on these stones so I never use more than very minimal pressure. I’d say after 4-5 knives they get loaded enough to warrant a cleaning with the magic eraser, every month I’m doing a full scrub

Cleaning these resinbonded stones mages a HUGE difference and is something that everyone with them needs to know how to do it. Bar keepers is great for those deep cleans. I use the Idahone eraser for quick unloading.

Try a set of Metallicbonded Diamond or Metallic bonded cbn of you want a slightly easier to clean up scratch pattern. They are expensive but they last nearly forever (you will have to do an etch from time to time to refresh the stones) I like love my Venev Dragon series stones and my CGSWs resin bonded diamond plates but I REALLY love my Metallic bonded diamond and CBN plates.
