not only is the stone part of the virus connected to a greek myth, but so are the screeching birds. stymphalian birds, in greek mythology, were metal birds with bronze beaks and razor-sharp feathers made to kill heracles. the other stuff doesn't seem to have a basis in mythology, but the orange gas likely ties to dionysus, given the color was associated with him- meaning the gas may cause madness or delirium.

I figured it was a play on sirens. Granted there is no beautiful song, but the screaming triggers your fight or flight, forcing you outside the way sirens would force sailors to come closer. Also, delirium and the orange gas makes sense, given its stated it smells strongly of pie or cake, and you'll be flooded with a strong sense of nostalgia, so strong you can't help but inhale further.
