Great video. I have a 117 stone foundation house in MN that could use that upgrade. Settling has created some bigger cracks over the years I suspect but not sure there is much more settling still going on. So this type of job would make the foundation look much better. One question, if old foundation had been painted, how much of the paint should be removed before refacing the stones?
@MikeHaduck
@MikeHaduck Жыл бұрын
Hi Rick, I got a whole playlist on "foundation repair" where I come across that, sometimes I just score it out with a small grinder, but I don't always get all the paint off, thanks Mike
@apexnine
@apexnine 3 жыл бұрын
I repaired a similar foundation with your methods here. I did this in early Fall of 2020. Looking at one wall now, where the mortar went on thinner, there are now thin cracks where there were not last year. Should I wet area and apply a coat over these areas? Will this fill in the very small cracks and fortify it better? I plan on painting over this area in the next 8 months. Thanks. I've learned a lot from these vids and I tell others about your channel.
@MikeHaduck

Hi Apex,, they are probably just shrinkage cracks, I usually wet it first and sponge some cement in and then paint it later on, thanks mike

At the prep stage, would you say its the right thing to do would be to hose or blow out all the loose old mortar and leave whatever doesn't hose or blow out?

Highly impressive watching the transformation from distressing to attractive. When applying the mortar, sometimes you apply with the rectangular trowel, sometimes the triangular,; sometimes you feed the triangular with the rectangular, sometimes vice versa.I expect you do it unconsciously but I doubt it's insignificant.

So I'm pretty much doing the same thing. But i have a few qeustions, My first question is, i dont have portland cement, but i do have portland stright from the bag. Would this work just as fine on the first pass over for the "glue"? Or is just putting water on before with a spayer work judt fine? Only asking because ive just been sparying water, but aeeing this with the portland as cement makes me wonder if i need to do that? As for the masonary cement, would regular type "s" mortar work? And then usually add a few scoops of portland with sand. (Its not a big batch) Any help would be much appreciated. Starting to get into this trade and this video really helped!

Hi, every situation is different, I have a video out called " lime, mortar or portland " what should I use and on all my other foundation videos I show what I used in each circumstance, I would not over think it, do a few samples and start where it is least seen, wait a couple days and see how it is turning out, thanks Mike

Hey Mike, have you ever poured a 6" concrete layer around an old stone foundation? Because it pushes our the bottom sill i guess you could taper it?

Hi Zick, I never had, if I am reading you right, if it's a water problem it's usually bad rain gutters and the land is not pitched away from the house, I never seen a band of concrete fix that, thanks Mike
