Excellent review. I went back and forth for 2-yrs before retiring an old Cabala rain jacket. I went with the M5 for your main reason. I don’t have the luxury to own both. No regrets so for.

Got my M5 here in Tasmania just over 2 years ago, it is the BEST! piece of clothing I own. I wear it all the time and through some pretty tough work and it holds up.

Hey Jay great review as always, I’m in the beginning stages of planning my first stone sheep hunt and was wondering if you had any tips for planning the logistics of the hunt etc. it’s super overwhelming not sure where to start. Thank you.
@MindfulHunterАй бұрын
That’s a pretty vague question 🤷

I love Stone Glacier as a brand but one thing I’ve noticed is that the neck opening on several garments I have owned is too small for any type of layering. The gear is made for people with pencil necks. Just an FYI

Thanks for the review, considering making a change to my rain jacket, currently running a First Lite Seak rain jacket, I like it but have had some issues with the Velcro that secures the flap that covers the zipper coming off because the g,je failed and the waterproof zipper is starting to fail as well

I scored a Cloudburst and sold my M5, pretty happy with that choice. Both are good options though

I’d be curious about Paramo. Seems popular in the UK and has a different water resistance technology than laminate barriers.

I reached out to sitka a while back having questions about the dew point. They said that waterproofness rating is 28,000 mm/24hours and the breathability rating is 25,000 g/m2/24 hours.
@MindfulHunterАй бұрын
That’s great to know. Thanks for sharing.

Current dewpoint owner, what are your thoughts on pairing the stone glacier m7 rain gear for those late season hunts to pair with a puffy jacket and pant vs getting something like blizzard set from sitka which is waterproof aswell, Thanks.
@MindfulHunterАй бұрын
I think that’s a fantastic idea. I’ve run the blizzard setup late season goat and it was great but the versatility of a two layer system with the M7 is very intriguing.

I have the M5 and Canis Nunavut. The M5 has a higher rating but I still much prefer the Canis gear.

Heard great things about Canis rain gear.

How you do think the M5 compares with the arcteryx rain jackets
@MindfulHunterАй бұрын
Arc’teryx is outstanding. I’d say it’s likely superior depending on which jacket you pick.
@livewire322Ай бұрын
I’m on my 5th Arcteryx Beta AR in 10 years because, regardless of how well cared for, their jackets don’t hold up well to being folded and crammed in packs and worn daily - they delaminate and eventually leak. What Arcteryx has going for it is that they stand behind their product and will make it right (now they credit you the amount you paid, rather than replacing). And, for guys like me who live close to their HQ, it’s easy enough for me to get their gear warrantied (same day fix, usually). With the first three jackets, I was basically living in them between work and play. I thought I’d be smart and buy a second Arcteryx jacket (beta LT) for ‘around the town’ to lighten the load on the Beta AR that I used for hunting, thinking that by cutting the amount of hours spent in any one jacket, they might hold up better, but that didn’t work out and both ended up leaking. You could dismiss this as “well, dude just isn’t caring for his gear” but that’s not the case, I’ve followed Arcteryx’s wash/care instructions to a T and the results are always the same. I frequently hunt waterfowl in region 2 of B.C. and big game everywhere in the province and am constantly putting my rain gear through deluge conditions - if that’s you, be prepared to warranty your kit. I’ve also bought Beta AR jackets for my wife, sister, mother, and step mom. My wife and mom have both warrantied their jackets once - although after a much longer product life, likely due to the fact that they use the jackets much less often than I do.

If you get a chance try a norrona finnskogen rain jacket. The mirofiber outer is super quiet which is why i like it so much. It is waterproof even if you take a shower for half and hour. I literally tried this lol. But being quiet is super nice. I previously tried a US military gortex rain jacket. Super durable but the nylon outer was so annoyingoy loud it drove me crazy. The noronna is no lightweight though. 3 layer and definitely in the heavyweight category. Very durable though. I actually like wearing it in the cold (-5 to-20 celcius) hunting in Canada. Allows much lighter underlayers because it blocks 100% of wind

Have you used the m5 pants?

I have not.
@aquila_brown28 күн бұрын
@MindfulHunter what shell pants do you use? I'm trying to pick up a new pair before all the pfas rules come in. M5 seems like a good option there. I generally use Arcteryx but they've already switched over to to new dwr treatments that I don't trust yet.

Was the weight you gave for the m5 taken by you on the scale? Their website has the m5 listed much lighter than your given weight. They list it at 17.6 oz for a size Large.
@MindfulHunterАй бұрын
I weighed both products in size XXL on my scale.
@watchinggearreviewsАй бұрын
@@MindfulHunterso the weights you gave were for size 2XL not large? I owned a m5 in 2XL and have it at 18oz on my lighter pack. I don’t have that one anymore but have a 3XL on the way. I’ll have to weigh it when I get it. Either way it’s fantastic rain gear in the experience I’ve had with it. Also had the dew point, kuiu kutana, Sitka cloudburst, and kuiu chugach and the m5 is my favorite and worth the weight. The kuiu kutana is a close second and may win if it had longer sleeves.
