Love it when people like richard can take great music and make it even greater.

Richard Smith is the keeper to so many great songs performed by some legendary guitarist's who's instruments no loner resonate. Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Merle Travis, and Marcel Dadi to name a few. Great song by a great artist brought to the stage at age 11 by Mr Guitar, the Great Chet Atkins, Chets generosity and his contributions to music are measured one great song at a time, this is one of those songs.

IMHO, as great as they are I don't believe Tommy, Andy, Mark, Vince and on and on are as smooth or have this guys funky sound. IMHO there were only a small few who have/had those musical qualities developed to an art form. There was Chet, and there was Jerry, now we have Richard Smith. Again, only an opinion from a dyed in the wool fan and nope, I can't play a lick but I as do millions - absolutely adore hearing quality guitar.

Back in the mid '40s, it was on a King record with Hank Penny and it was called "Merle's Buck Dance". The name was changed for Capitol Records.

Chet should have made Richard a CGP. To me he's a better player than John Knowles or Steve Wariner, who were made CGPs when Chet was alive, and Paul Yandell after Chet passed , I think. Almost seems like Chet was choosing friends. I hate to say that, but I guess he could do whatever he wanted since he made it up anyway. To me Richard is a better player than all these CGP guys , including Tommy...even Tommy said so himself. The exceptions would be Chet and Jerry Reed. They were at the top of the heap of thumb pickers. I like all these guys , but I think Richard doesn't get his just recognition. Just my opinion.

+drkfive I've never seen someone "turn on the guitar" the way Richard Smith does. I didn't get a chance to see Merle, Chet, or Jerry (or any of that generation) play live but I have seen many of the current all-star fingerpickers and Richard Smith tops them all for me.
@jtryland1018 жыл бұрын
+drkfive Richard Smith is definitely as good or even better than some of the guys you mentioned, but remember - the C.G.P. honour wasn't awarded just based on technical skill.

drkfive Can you clarify for me, you say Richard Smith is a better player than Tommy Emmanuel and the latter admitted that?
@jimmccarley96096 жыл бұрын
Tommy is very humble, and yes, he does sing Richard's praises. Both are amazingly good, and have been for a long time. I've never bought into the idea of contests for music.

There's no such thing as too fast/slow. If he was playing with someone else, then they would need to be in the same time as each other, but playing on your own, it's your choice what tempo you play at. I always teach people to experiment with tempo, and play at whatever tempo they like the sound of on any song, no matter what the original was like. As far as choppy goes, if that's his style, then that's fine too. It's personal preference. Obviously it's not to your taste, but it is to his.

Richard is a fantastic player. But the only thing I can say about this song in particular is that he's cheating. I for one would like to actually see what he could do without cheating, not that I believe it would change the outcome of his performance. I would just be interested in watching him do it. So please Richard if you happen to see this would it be possible for you to repost this tune using only two fingers 😊.
