Daniela Doria was an incredibly committed horror actress who regrettably never worked again outside of the 4 Fulci films (City of the Living Dead, House by the Cemetary, New York Ripper, Black Cat) in which she starred. I've always thought that to be a tremendous shame. How many other horror stars would be prepared to vomit up sheep entrails to make a good scene?

Ending explained: The movie got 'em. Duh! I first saw this as horribly cut-up Gates Of Hell when I was a kid. It made even less sense, minus most of the gore, but the kick-ass Fabio Frizzi theme was permanently embedded in my brain. Finally saw the real version in '02 and I still watch it at least once a year. Possibly the most atmospherically horrifying of all Fulci's films (making it one of the scariest films ever, by default).

Some people equate nasty to scary as it can be jarring and frightening. Example in Scanners: up to the point of the head explosion, we're not sure what Scanner powers can really do (before that we just see the main character mess with an old lady), so when it happens, it's a bit frightening and gross at the same time. However some make a distinction. "Scary" to someone might equal a character turning around and locking eyes with a terrifying ghost creature. "Gross" may equal that girl vomiting her intestines. I think gross shit can be scary and elicit a similar fear response form me, such as maggots crawling in entrails of an open chest.

@BainesMkII7 жыл бұрын
I've read a few different claims for how the original ending was destroyed, but yeah, it seems an important point to make. Though it still doesn't explain why Fulci went with that particular makeshift ending. It did trigger view speculation though. (Because they didn't close the portal before All Saints Day, they didn't stop all the zombies. Mary did die at the beginning, was reanimated for the duration of the film, and died again at the ending. The events of the film just didn't sink in on everyone until the end and the reunion. Etc.)

Okay, so after watching this review, I decided that I'd actually like to watch this movie. Normally I just watch your reviews and I'm okay with it, but I dunno, this movie just really seemed cool to me. So I look it up on KZbin and I see the full movie (under the name Gates of Hell). I get cozy and press play. I get why people wouldn't like this movie and why it got so many negative audience reviews. It's pretty damn gory, and though you can tell when dummies replace the actors, it was still pretty damn graphic. Each scene clumsily transitioned into the next, as if the only thing keeping the whole movie connected was a strand of dental floss. The story, while interesting to say the least, was confusing and some scenes didn't seem to be well thought out. Despite all my grievances with this movie, I REALLY liked it. I mean it, through all the gore and painful dubbing, I thought the movie was gorgeous. It was atmospheric, the music was incredible, I loved the underground set that they built. The decayed setting and just the whole premise of the movie I love. Even the gory parts I loved! Even though you could tell they were dummies, it was just so lovingly sadistic it still gave you chills! The actor who played the priest didn't need a single line to give you a feeling of fright and even though some sound effects didn't exactly match the tone of the movie (cartoon sound effects aren't scary) it still left a bad taste in your mouth, but in a good way. TL;DR: While there are very noticeable flaws with the movie, I absolutely adored it. The atmosphere it creates and the feeling of foreboding is something that any fan of horror would absolutely love. I doubt you'll read this comment, or need my silly opinion, but thank you Brad for introducing me to this movie, and I think I'll keep my eyes peeled for more of Lucio Fulci's work.
@steveharvey21027 жыл бұрын
Hi, I just wanted to say that your review perfectly described the reasons I love the movie. If you like this one you should definitely check out the other 2 in the Unofficial "Gates of Hell" trilogy. "The Beyond" is my favorite. Cheers.
@DragonMaiden777 жыл бұрын
Steve Harvey I have been looking for 'The Beyond'. Sadly unlike the other two in the Trilogy it can't be viewed on KZbin. I'd love to support the crew behind these movies, but I'm not really rolling in money at the moment, and last month I did my extravagant spending on Eibon comics (which I recommend also). I'll be able to spare a few dollars this month though, and if I can find the DVDs I'll be looking for all three. I know 'The Beyond' is one of his crowning achievements so I'm excited to see it. I'm happy we both have the same views on the movie! I thought I'd give my humble opinion, in the hopes that I could inspire others as much as Brad inspired me.

Nowadays, I have standards. The way Father Zombie stares reminds me a lot of the way Christopher Lee stares in the Hammer Dracula series. Nice job on The Simpsons clip. 15:42- Now THAT'S the whackiest thing I ever hoid. At least this movie didn't end with an out of nowhere cliffhanger, like Skyline.
