People want to think "Oh, this is just a wholesome movie about a family solving their problems following a good christian family" or whatever in an age where for some reason christians think they're being persecuted and any religious movie at all is better than it really is because it stands against society or whatever.... But let's not kid ourselves. This movie is crap. Anyone who thinks about this for more than a second can see how dumb this is. So just...... Anyone reading this, don't lock yourself in a fucking closet. God doesn't care if you have a room dedicated to prayer or not, that's just fucking dumb. Actually try and work out your problems and put in some effort to meet God halfway. Don't be the idiot who just uses prayer to run away from your problems....... Just... just don't.........

A car drives by a man's house and he is told that there is a flood coming towards the town. The man says "God will save me." As the water level rises, a boat comes by the man's house. The people say "get in the boat, we're here to save you." The man says "God will save me." The water reaches the man's roof and a helicopter flies over. The pilot says "Get in, we're here to save you." Again, the man says "God will save me." The man is in heaven and ask God "God, why didn't you save me?" God says "I tried to. I sent the car, I sent the boat, and I sent the helicopter." The crazies that made this movie want people to become that man.

My mother used to be a part of a really weird Christian Cult that told women that they needed to submit to their husbands because men should e the ones in charge. I was eleven when she converted and only went to church with her a couple of times (because I had to go) and when the old people would ask me what I thought about the sermons (these were audio tapes that were recorded in Oklahoma and sent to the people in the church around the world) I would reply saying that they were sexist, racist, and had no founding in any kind of reason. Eventually I was told I was no longer allowed to go.

@sydnirobinson31259 жыл бұрын
she ended up actually getting kicked out two years ago. My mother moved back to her hometown and because the church is so small the closet one for her to go to was 5+ hours away. An Aunt of hers that was also in the church reported her after seeing her facebook posts about partying on the Sabbath and not attending religious services. Her sister got kicked out too for not attending services as well and ended up having her husband (who had grown up in the church from the time it was started) to be kicked out too. And with the way things work if you had been kicked out and already baptized then anyone still in the church isn't allowed to communicate with you. It's absolutely insane and a total cult.

As a Protestant in the proper sense, the fact that fellow believers can watch this and then say that it's well made or good is somewhat aggravating. To paraphrase C.S. Lewis, as Christians, (or any sort of belief system, really), we are not to make Christian art, but instead art that is Christian. What that means is that we are not supposed to be producing something like this purely for the sake of it being evangelical, but for it to reflect our beliefs and life in an intelligent manner. Going back to Lewis, his Narnia books are an excellent example of creating art that reflects truths while still being enjoyable for people who don't believe as well. Tolkien is another excellent example, particularly because his work wasn't allegorical, yet it contained many values held by Christianity. I'll end this with a quote from Francis Schaeffer; " Christian art is the expression of the whole life of the whole person as a Christian. What a Christian portrays in his art is the totality of life. Art is not to be solely a vehicle for some sort of self-conscious evangelism." I would call my fellow believers to evaluate our art and not let it be inferior to other art. If we feel we've been drawn into great purpose, the art we create should reflect that. The exploitation film reviewer's post was probably the wrong place to post this, but it needs to be said. : P

Funny thing was that I recently saw an episode of South Park that got what it means to be a Christian better than any of these Christian propaganda movies ever could. It was the episode that reveals that the priest of South Park could have a chance to movie to a church in a better town and had a larger congregation, but decides not to because he is afraid that the Vatican would replace him with a child molester. That act of personal sacrifice where he puts the safety of the children of the town above his own desires is way more Christian than a movie like War Room. These so called Christian movie makers should be ashamed that South Park gets what it means to be a Christian better than they do.

Hey lady, here's an idea: instead of screaming in a closet, TALK TO YOUR HUSBAND. Be civil about it, but tell him what he's doing wrong and why it's hurting you. Tell him that you want to save your marriage, but you both have to work towards that goal. If he keeps yelling at you and/or breaking the law, then he's a total asshole and you need to file for divorce. I may not be a Christian, but I'm pretty sure God isn't a genie. He helps those who help themselves, not those who scream loud enough. Honestly, no movie has angered me on the same level as this one. If a person is being abused, it's not their job to "fix" their abuser. They have absolutely no obligation to forgive the person abusing them. Maybe I just feel so much anger because my mother was in an abusive marriage, and had she followed this movie's advice, I don't even want to know what would've become of her. After she got a divorce, the piece of shit she was married to got re-married and went on to physically abuse that woman and their kids. Some people don't change, no matter what you do or how hard you pray. But what hurts me the most about this movie is that in 2018, we're STILL telling women to submit. If I ever get married, I don't want a wife who will submit. I want to be her equal, and her to be mine. If one of us is mad at the other, we don't curse the Devil and pray for God to intervene; we talk things out. THAT is what a healthy marriage is. If your spouse is a verbally abusive criminal who only refrained from cheating on you because of literal Deus Ex Machina, your marriage is not healthy. If God truly loves you, he would want you to do what's best for yourself.
@thefirstbourne1493 жыл бұрын
Oh hell, no, there are grounds to divorce in the Bible!! Don't let anyone tell you different! It was said that it's at least allowed if he or she cheated, or not to even associate with these kinds of people who are sexually immoral, greedy, or if they're (also sometimes referring to them as non-Christian people, but...). It could mean anyone who could even be abusive. The sexually immoral part doesn't have to be just the person who allows consent because one, that's an old law, and two, it's literally consent! Nobody got hurt!! I don't want to go into it too much, but there are grounds for it that these movies act like doesn't exist.

Also... 35:48 - 36:18 You, Dave sir, just nailed down why most people, even many of us Christians, hate these movies. These movies are just sermon illustrations, not real works of art. They're made to preach (even more blatant when movies like War Room or Courageous have actual sermons/challenges at the end), not to entertain, in an entertainment medium. These film makers think that because they have a message to preach, they can disregard such concepts as subtlety, form, creativity, or appeal. Which is sad, since we're supposed to be better than this... urgh...

I kind of agree with Sarah's interpretation that, in the alternate universe of this movie, the wife takes the moral high road by conforming to the beliefs of the movie's intended audience. Everybody just agrees that the godly wife should submit and the godly husband should lead. The husband is going against the rules of the universe by being an ungodly man, and so the audience will see him as in the wrong and in need of correction. The movie's ideals are misogynistic of course, but the way it expresses them is very patronizing of men, if that makes any sense. By putting the onus on the wife to make things better, the movie takes control away from the husband, with the assumption he doesn't know any better and can't be expected to act decently without action by his wife and God. It's just another version of the old mentality about men being beastly and instinct-driven, and religion being the only cause that can make them care about right and wrong. I think Sarah's right, this movie, in its own weird way, thinks a lot more highly of women than it does of men.

I went to a summer camp run by Baptists when I was a teen (don't worry, it's not crazy religious parents" thing. I had friends who said it was run) and one of the counselors there said she cared more about God than her husband. I'm just thinking "I'm pretty sure God can take care of himself, lady". She also said she'd rather have us say something like "fuck" or "shit" than use "God" as an expletive. I was already really used to saying things like "oh my god" so I definitely accidentally irritated her that way, though it didn't bother me, since I'd already determined that she was one of those _crazy_ religious types, and had no intention of really _respecting_ her.

Actually it's a Middle Eastern tradition that predates Judaism (let alone Christianity and Islam) by several millennia. It is a sign of hospitality, and refusal to do so was viewed as an insult.
@Jaci06079 жыл бұрын
To be fair, at least Tyler Perry had his main character separate from her cheating douche bag husband in Diary of a Mad Black Woman--both in the play and movie. But he's still an abysmal screenwriter and director.

In my screening, when the movie ended, the audience applauded. I'm not joking. It actually happened!
@harrietamidala16919 жыл бұрын
+29AndreG Did the audience take it seriously, or was it snark bait?
@29AndreG9 жыл бұрын
harrietamidala1691 Apparently, they took it seriously.
@harrietamidala16919 жыл бұрын
+29AndreG I thought so too, though I was really hoping for the latter. I'm not surprised and rather scared. It reminds me of those Facebook posts feature pictures of ill children and asking people to write down AMEN! in the comments as if the power of prayer will help them heal from a distance, like audience clapping will bring Tinkerbell back to life. I can't stand those posts, and I feel sick when I see graphic pictures attached to them. It's disgusting.
@jimmymelendez1836 Жыл бұрын
@@harrietamidala1691 It's been years since I've seen those wretched posts. Especially when they post a picture of a child who has some type of deformity saying, Do you think I'm pretty? It was like this after I first got on Facebook. I hated this kind of exploitation on Facebook.

16:14 - 17:02 This is one of my major problems with these films, and one of my struggles with Christianity. The whole "The only help you'll ever need is prayer and Bible reading" idea... No, no it's not. That isn't all the help we need. Sometimes, that's not the help we need at all... As to the comparisons with Fireproof... Eh, some ways Fireproof was better, some ways it was worse... not sure calling the two identical is entirely fair, though...

A lot of so-called "christians" seem to forget the whole "You need to meet God halfway" thing. Which is KIND-OF a pretty important detail to leave out because it means you actually have to do shit for God to be able to ACTUALLY help you with your problems!
@dracocrusher8 жыл бұрын
***** Not with the religion, but I have a problem with people telling others that God hates them unless they follow some form of unhealthy guideline or just happen to be born a certain way or if someone's just born with a different sexual orientation than is normal. Believe whatever you want, but the moment your belief forces women to stay with a toxic relationship out of fear of god and causes actual psychological problems, THEN it becomes a problem.

Christian here, and I don’t know my Bible as well as I probably should, that said, I’m pretty sure infidelity is the only valid reason for divorce. And he was cheating on her. So I think even scriptural my a divorce is justified here. Correct me if I’m wrong.
