This is loosely based on a novel that was half amazing and half dreadfully dragging. Author of the novel is Mark Helprin
@Pineappolis16 күн бұрын
I only found that out much later. Prior to that, the line about the horse having to do the maths (I assume ripped out of the novel without a hint of the novel's explanation) might have been the most baffling thing I'd heard in a wide-release film because, not only did it make no sense, it served no narrative purpose whatsoever. At least in 'The Immortals' when a guy says that the Titans are a myth despite them literally being in a big see-through box down a flight of stairs a few feet away, he kind of had to be an idiot to get the plot where it needed to go. ...I can't believe I technically compared 'The Immortals' favourably to something. It's comfortably my least favourite film of all time. The only reason I didn't walk out is that I was 30,000 ft. above the ocean.

I am, without judgment, genuinely curious what this comment was about. If their language was just too crass for you, that's totally understandable - that just isn't for some people. If it was because of their critique of the film - even as someone who's very fond of it because of some great acting and its sheer earnestness - I can't disagree that it's maybe the wide-release film I've seen with the most utterly baffling creative decisions (and I've seen 'The Immortals'). That's fine, though. The emotionality carries it for me but a critic _can't_ just say, "it made me feel good," because that's no use to someone deciding whether to watch it themselves - they need to talk about what works and what doesn't.
