Honestly, I would love to see a "Best Films of 2024" list from you. I always look forward to seeing your lists every year and they also shine some light on movies that maybe I hadn't even heard about for me to check out.

Glad that Monte Cristo is good, I’ve always enjoyed the Jim Caviezal/Richard Harris version a lot

I liked the miniseries with Gérard Depardieu. While he himself can't play a starving prisoner and some additions to the original story could have been left out, it did keep more interesting elements of the original than most adaptations (due to being a series I guess). I also like that it had both types of villains, the complete slime balls that make it fun to see them being thoroughly destroyed and the and the ones you can understand and somewhat feel bad for when they are utterly ruined, that show you how the count may be going to far. It also almost didn't make the mistake to have him get back together again with his original love. Which means nothing in the end I guess, but did make it seem more self aware than most other adaptations.

Exactly what I came to say. I'll see this one at Brad's recommendation, but the one where Jesus Christ was Superman's father was excellent.

The Damned does an excellent job with atmosphere & conveying the horror of isolation & desperation that can turn people into monsters. I enjoy stories that remind us that we not only have to be watchful for what lurks in the darkness outside but also be wary of the darkness within ourselves.

Best and worst lists from critics like you are always good. Even if you can't make it a full 10, having a reference for what's good is a nice thing.

It’s weird, but I can never get enough count of monte cristo adaptions. Even the anime was amazing

Damnit the send up you had for Bloody Axe Wound made it sound great right up till you said it wasn't. That is sad, I was really hoping it would be better. I'll have to check out the other two, esp. The Count. Thanks Brad!

…I never thought I would see the day where whilst reviewing a recent moovie Brad would say something good about… Video Violence of all things. Sheesh… May time come when he’ll do the same of Nukie ? So we would know that things are truly bad ?

Of course not, who watches VHS or goes to video stores anymore? That's how the killer keeps getting away with it, but he can't taunt the victims' families about it either. Slasher flicks have been satirized to hell and back , so taking them seriously doesn't work either. Also, IRL, killers use guns instead of melee weapons.

How much you wanna bet the makers of Bloody Axe Wound were inspired by Episode 2 of Punch Punch Forever?

I feel you have to do something drastically WRONG to make a bad version of The Count of Monté Cristo. It's such a time honored and praised book, generation after generation, with clearly rich themes and character work. Still, some adaptations exceed beyond others, and while I have a soft spot for the Kevin Reynolds' 2002 adaptation, I know you need about three hours to do the text its full justice. I've heard good word about this French language film, and I'm glad that it's getting more praise from you as well.

Hey don’t forget about the episode of Wishbone for Monte Cristo. Give that dog an Oscar.

Still waiting to find a version that does have him end up with the same women as the book did (which makes far more sense than having him go back to his original love) but develop that love story more than the original novel did. It's something that would elevate the story and make it stand out from other adaptations. No Idea why the Depardieu miniseries was aware that some other romance story would make sense, but decided to invent an original character for that purpose instead (and then dropped the whole thing halfway).
