Raiders has that effect on people. I remember Time magazine calling it "the movie movie." It was Spielberg and Lucas's tribute to the adventure serials of the 1930s and 40s they loved as kids, and the way it's structured reflects that, with cliffhangers every 15 minutes or so. Seriously, you could chop it into 10 parts and show each one as an installment of a serial with a cliffhanger ending.

Thank you for solving an age old mystery for me. My brain is riddled with movie and television scenes that stuck with me as a child, but I did not know the name of. This was from either my parents flipping quickly through channels and not wanting to go back, or - as was the case of this movie - a movie that my father had recorded and something I caught glimpses of while he was checking the video quality. All I remembered was a scene of a dude holding a sword in front of him while the room glowed orange, and some dude dragged backward through a small opening by warthogs. For years I searched for those keywords, but to no avail. "Killer warthog" only brought up the movie RAZORBACK, and I knew it wasn't that film just by looking at it. For a time, I was beginning to think that it had just been a fever dream. But no - here it is in its full gory glory - EVILSPEAK. I pulled it up quickly on KZbin and scanned through it to verify that it was the same movie I had briefly seen all those years ago, and it was! I will finish watching your video and maybe go back to check out the entire movie. Thank you again for finally putting that eyeworm to rest.

I think '81 is really underrated. Yeah, Raiders was so big and influential it sucked a lot of air out of the room in public memory, but it's telling that even with so many obvious trend-jumping movies (i.e. slashers) on the market, you could find pretty much anything you wanted in wide release, unlike nowadays. Like it's hard to imagine a film like Arthur not only being a major studio release, but a legitimate box-office blockbuster -- it was #4 for the year. And something like On Golden Pond getting all the way to second place! That can't happen in today's kiddie-centric marketplace.
