Raiders has that effect on people. I remember Time magazine calling it "the movie movie." It was Spielberg and Lucas's tribute to the adventure serials of the 1930s and 40s they loved as kids, and the way it's structured reflects that, with cliffhangers every 15 minutes or so. Seriously, you could chop it into 10 parts and show each one as an installment of a serial with a cliffhanger ending.

My dad was working part time as a theater manager when he met my mother. He took her to the local premiere of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Two months later they were married, and nine months after that I was born, so I basically credit my entire existence to that movie.

Thank you for solving an age old mystery for me. My brain is riddled with movie and television scenes that stuck with me as a child, but I did not know the name of. This was from either my parents flipping quickly through channels and not wanting to go back, or - as was the case of this movie - a movie that my father had recorded and something I caught glimpses of while he was checking the video quality. All I remembered was a scene of a dude holding a sword in front of him while the room glowed orange, and some dude dragged backward through a small opening by warthogs. For years I searched for those keywords, but to no avail. "Killer warthog" only brought up the movie RAZORBACK, and I knew it wasn't that film just by looking at it. For a time, I was beginning to think that it had just been a fever dream. But no - here it is in its full gory glory - EVILSPEAK. I pulled it up quickly on KZbin and scanned through it to verify that it was the same movie I had briefly seen all those years ago, and it was! I will finish watching your video and maybe go back to check out the entire movie. Thank you again for finally putting that eyeworm to rest.

Nighthawks was the first R-rated movie I ever saw in a theater, and Brad is right, it's terrific! It's nice to see Stallone in a role that's grounded in reality (as opposed to the superhuman Rambo, which is pure macho fantasy), Rutger Hauer is suave, handsome, ruthless and deadly as Wulfgar, and the whole movie has a streetwise grittiness I absolutely love.

Lloyd (audio) -> 41:28 Thank you, Brad, for this. I enjoyed your ‘1980 in Film’ video last year and was ecstatic to see you continued the cinematic retrospective. As a horror fan, I have seen pretty much all of the horror/slasher films of ’81 (except for Scream, Nightmare, and Watcher In The Woods, and I plan on watching all of them, along with ‘Thief’). In total, I’ve seen 67 of the films you covered in ‘1981 in Film’. I know it takes you several months to get these types of retrospective videos done and I greatly appreciate your efforts. It offers us opportunities to watch movies that we ordinarily wouldn’t be interested in viewing. Can’t wait to see ‘1982 in Film’ next year! P.S. - My birthday is three days before yours! 😊

I was 5 years old and due to the fact my parents couldn’t find a baby sitter, I went along with them to celebrate my godfather’s 21st birthday. After dinner at Red Lobster, my godfather brought up that he wanted to see a movie. For whatever reason, STRIPES was either sold out or the last show of the day had started. Second choice was TARZAN, THE APE MAN!! My parents said they got so many looks from others in the audience and were glad I just fell asleep within the first 10 minutes. Great video!

This was a great time to be a moviegoer. I was reviewing many of these films for the college paper at the time while hitting all of the many venues for arthouse, indie, foreign and classic movies that existed in the big city at the time. I would watch new stuff one day and RW Fassbinder, or the Marx Brothers, or Humphrey Bogart or D.W. Griffith the next. There will never be the likes of those times again.

I think '81 is really underrated. Yeah, Raiders was so big and influential it sucked a lot of air out of the room in public memory, but it's telling that even with so many obvious trend-jumping movies (i.e. slashers) on the market, you could find pretty much anything you wanted in wide release, unlike nowadays. Like it's hard to imagine a film like Arthur not only being a major studio release, but a legitimate box-office blockbuster -- it was #4 for the year. And something like On Golden Pond getting all the way to second place! That can't happen in today's kiddie-centric marketplace.

I was there. Let me tell you sonny, the 80s sucked. Cultural conservatism was the order of the day. Racism, homophobia and sexism were pretty rampant. I hated it.

Hey Snob. Last night I stumbled across a 90s movie I remember called “Stay Tuned” that feels like good Snob material. John Ritter is a depressed middle aged dad obsessed with TV who makes a deal with the devil and he and his wife get sucked into a hellish TV parody world. It’s on Amazon Prime right now

He’s referenced it before on the show, such as the 1980 in film. I agree a Snob episode for “Stay Tuned” would be great! And besides we as a society need more videos on how great John Ritter was.

Seriously Brad...this is the best thing you've come up with. I watched the 1980 one several times( and rediscovered the girl the gold watch and everything which has haunted me since childhood. ) Having grown up in the 80s this just brings a big goofy smile to my face. Kudos to you and especially to Laura because I'm sure she's giving you the same stink eye that my wife does when I'm way too into my paintings. Fantastic work, man. I can't wait to see what you do with the rest of the decade. But...are you maybe going to do shows from the Era in the same way you're doing trailers? I'd watch that.

Here's a 1981 movie that you forgot and I watched for the first time yesterday. It's called Southern Comfort, it stars Keith Carradine, Powers Booth, Alan Autry, and Fred Ward and was directed by Walter Hill. It was a about a group of Louisiana National Guardsmen who get hunted down by Cajuns after stealing their boats. When I looked it up, the movie didn't do great financially and Walter Hill said it was more well received outside of America. It's definitely one of his best movies.

Stumbled on that movie as a double feature with Apocalypse Now back in 1982. What else would an unattended 14 year old go to see?
