One of my favorite fun facts between the movie and the book: “Come play with us, Danny,” is in the book, but the twins aren’t in it. In the book, it’s a disembodied voice coming from cement tubes in the hotel playground. It comes after an intense scene where Danny crawls around in them and snow traps him. Also, while “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” isn’t in the book, it IS in “Pet Sematary.”

One great piece of acting with convincing emotion is where she goes to lift up the bonnet of the snowcat when planning her escape, and pulls out the dismantled engine part that Jacks destroyed and holds it to her chest. Not only a well-placed Neil Diamond reference but also a bonus double-tracked clip of Salvation Show...craftmanship meets showmanship. Genius.

Sometimes it's the simplest things that really work in the movie; one of the things I love the most is the camera movement as Jack's chopping down the door. Moving it alongside the strike just gives it so much more momentum and force.

@cinemasnob Thank you so much for reviewing one of my favorite films and one of Kubrick's greatest works. At minute 15:06 you say you love that the design of the floors make no sense. Well, Kubrick and the set designers specifically built a set that couldn't actually exist in a reality. For example, where if you kept making all the turn you would run into a theoretical wall. So, they build many sets and shot through this impossible floor plan. The reason they gave is they wanted to subconsciously confuse, unsettle, and disorient the audience. The man truly loved his craft! And thank you again for your fun and exquisite content!

Great review to start off 2021! Funny and a good deal of backstory on the movie's production and the book... I first watched Stanley Kubrick's The Shining about a day or two before New Year's Eve 2009 and it still remains to this day one of my all time favorite films!

If Stanley Kubrick made a Silent Hill movie it would have been the greatest thing ever.
@Thegr8MC4 жыл бұрын
@ECKohns I don't know, I think he would have been faithful with 2 since it has the most emotional depth and characterization. But Kubrick would have definitely nailed the atmosphere and sense of isolation Silent Hill is known for.
@cineMADvocate4 жыл бұрын
Bullshit… Just like the shining it would have been blasted by people pretty much like you who would’ve talked about how unfaithful it was and how much it didn’t make sense. That’s what happen when the shining came out it is only become a classic because now everybody tells you it’s OK to like it.
@Thegr8MC3 жыл бұрын
@@cineMADvocate You think I would have hated it because of source material deviations and becasue people originally didn't like Shining? I personally doubt that. I mean, I liked the first Silent Hill movie which was admittedly terrible and heavily deviated from the source. Hell, I love all the new Star Wars movies which the fandom seems to despise and heavily breaks from the original established canon. What I'm trying to say is, I give movies a chance and I try to judge them fairly beyond the initial reaction. That, and I'm generally more positive when critiquing. I prioritize looking for things to praise over things to criticize. I kind of lost my train of thought there, I only responded because yo assumed what I would or wouldn't like. But I hope at least something I said makes sense to you?

After watching a behind the scenes documentary of this movie, I gained a whole new respect for Shelley Duvall. Stanley Kubrick put that woman through pure torturous hell. He said that he really did like her but he needed to treat her like crap to really bring out the beaten down side of her performance.

I’d just like to point out for anyone who never noticed before, those first notes played in the opening shot of the movie is Dies Irae: A popular leitmotif of death. It’s foreshadowing from the very beginning. Fun fact, it’s also all over the place in Sweeney Todd: Forward and Backward. Appropriate for the subject material.
