I love this !!! Being a cattle owner and raise feeder cattle and cow/calf pairs we have our share of fence issues sometimes or know some who don’t have good fences and their livestock gets loose and out on the highway or in someone else’s pasture . We thankfully have good fences but we’d love to learn a more efficient & more effective way and less time consuming!!! Life’s busy and every lil “ work smarter , not harder” counts & is something we strive for in our house and raising twin girls , time and efficiency are just a few things that i take pride in doing to accomplish everyday things & to insure things to run smoothly throughout our daily routine!!

As a fencing contractor here in New Zealand we regularly use an angle stay shown at 13.20 a lot of our work is done on steep high country and these last for years, good and solid if done right. I prefer them to the box stay as there's no wire to loosen up with stock pressure over time. Also if the box stay isn't notched in to the strainer post it can have a tendency to fall out over time if the wire stretches and loosens up.

I liked the Scottish connection off one of the guys. I’m around 3 hours from Scotland and there are some bleak places up there. A lot of folks built the dry stone walls and just maintain them as they have been there for centuries. The first question in my head was why not sharpen the bottom of the posts, but you answered that in the video just as I was thinking it. Another great video 👍
@peterpannell39085 жыл бұрын
CC TV Depends in NZ posts are nearly always pointed ( 95%) It actually works the other way round pointed post finish up tighter in the ground when driven. And flat end posts suffer more top damage than pointed ones.

I've never seen something like this but that was very neat. Most importantly the really down to earth conversations these guys have. Everyone taking in whatever criticism they had, good or bad to learn. I live in the city so you don't see much of this, but just this past week we had a private company replaced quite a few power poles in the area with just a couple of large trucks. One has the large drill for the hole. The other carries the pole, the other has the claws to move it. Another truck has that bucket for the workers, I think it may have been the same truck with the claw. Just some amazing stuff what they did in just about a week, not to mention running all new cables to each of those.

Cool competition, but i think its crazy not pointing the posts. We always point our posts and we would almost never have posts driven off line. Even when it does happen it is much quicker to lift the post, pull out whatever rock is in the way and redrive it. The posts are going in so slowly without a point that you are losing a huge amount of time in the day. I dont believe it weakens the post either. Source fencing contractor for over 30 years.

I put up enough fencing in my farming days to know I don't ever want to drive another post or string one more inch of wire....... Have you ever had to cut a bundle of old fence wire out of the undercarrage of a dozier? Very rough on the seals. I know there is a purpose and a reason for fences and fencing in general I am just glad I don't do it anymore. Lot of folks put a lot of money in fencing only to neglect the upkeep involved with them. Encroachment by vines and trees and other things can take their toll. Also you have to inspect and maintain fencing for loose posts and wire. Can't just put it up and forget it. These guys show a lot of pride in their work and the workmanship shows. While my fences probably weren't the same caliber as these guys it kept the livestock in and the unwanted out. Hats off to these people for a job well done.........

8:28 .. I don;t know a lot about these "fancy fencing" guys .. but I saw a set up on my buddy's farm and the company used Sharpened Posts of only 3" diameter (green pressure treated) ... but the set up used twice as many posts as a normal fence ... the posts pounded in, in seconds too .. MUCH faster than any of this ones (the fence was "topped" with 2X6's for horses) ......... that was 8 or 10 years ago and ... looks the same as when it was installed so far.

Why pound the posts instead of drilling holes? Here in the west, there is lots of rock and hard clay. What's the best method for putting in posts in to rock and/or very hard clay?
@farmfencesolutionsllc5 жыл бұрын
We generally use a rock auger or pilot auger in those situations. The "dirt" in this video is very hard and dry clay. Pounding the posts makes for a stronger fence, it's faster to install, less expensive, and requires less labor.

As an Aussie, I'm almost speechless at the fact you can even drive posts of that diameter into the ground! There aren't many places in the Great Southern Land with soil soft enough to let you do that. Most rural fencing is made up of steel "star" pickets, ( there are probably other names for them ) and in some places, even getting them into the ground requires a lot of faith in the Lord and an equal amount of bad language. It all balances out in the end, because what we lack in the former, most of us have an oversupply of in the latter! I once worked on a job putting in a telephone line from Croydon to Normanton, up in the Gulf country of Queensland, over what the locals called "ironstone country" and they sure weren't joking. Almost every post hole we put down required drilling and firing. There was no competition going on that job- we just wanted it to end! There's no sour grapes in this post - I just envy the amount of soft topsoil you have in the U.S.
