There is a whole story behind how I picked up my first tractor, but in short I worked hard for about 1 year and started off with $700. I traded up through atvs until I traded for a sxs that was all kitted out and worth about 8k. I just traded my dream vehicle yesterday for a really nice Beaver S-370 with a whole trailer full of attachments. I realized that my parents over the year have sacrificed a lot for me, now I’m going to try and return the favor. You helped me in deciding which tractor we needed for the property. They have a bad rep but it held up for almost 15 years. I don't want to spend 3 hrs mowing anymore and want a toy - the resale on the Kubota's seems great.

I bought a Kubota B26-50 because it was the smallest tractor that didn't feel like a toy, like it could do real work, but it was not so big that it got into all the more complicated EPA stuff like the 33-50 you have. There have been a few times I wanted more power, but for the most part, I made the right decision. And totally agree on the loader and four wheel drive.

Haha, the right tractor was the one I could buy. I lined up to buy a tractor but due to Covid restrictions the dealer could not supply it. So we went to another dealer and told him what we wanted. He had a tractor a bit bigger than what we wanted and did a deal on it. We now own a strong Kubota MX5200 with a 4 in 1 front end loader. It’s not exactly a beast but it’s strong. The 4 in 1 loader is great. It’s won’t pick up stuff as easily as a grapple can but it can carry stuff and grade like a grapple can’t. It’s a Swiss Army knife of implements.

I have a John Deere 1025R with several implements for my 5 acre property. I cleared land for garden, put in deer fencing, trenched and installed french drains, leveled land and installed a lawn, built trails through the woods, repaired gravel roads, moved 1/4 acre of wood debris for burning. Endless project in one year and put 430 hours on the machine. A larger machine would have been great for some of the jobs but would have been too big to maneuver for many of them on my forested land.

@@TDC_Dragon Hello! We have 31 acres, most of which is woods, brush, and rocks. We have a Kioti 20hp (model 1610? can't remember off the top of my head, and I don't want to go out and look at it) with the front loader and backhoe, and a few other implements. We bought it used after moving here, and its what we could afford at the time, as if you know anything about the Ozark Mountains... you know why we HAD to have a backhoe... you can't dig a hole with a shovel for nothing... heck if you could still buy dyno mite down at the hardware store...... anyway... Yeah, a small tractor Can get through woods Easier... but in many situations once we get back through the woods, the tractor isn't powerful enough to do the work we need. Whether its needing to dig, lift, or move large rocks. Sometimes it wasn't even strong enough to lift other stuff.... Digging up trees... small trees are fine, but larger trees I often just try to cut at or below grade and leave them as it just isn't worth the time, but in some locations this isn't an option. Like one instance, we needed to dig up two oak stumps, about 20 inch or so diameter. Which we deal with oak constantly as its mostly what we have here in Missouri, and oak often has some deep very tough roots. We litterally spent two or 3 weeks just trying to dig up just these 2 stumps.... I couldn't beleive how much time we had spent.... and they were out in the open in our yard... Finally was able to finish pulling them up with a heavy log chain hooked to a 2-1/2 ton Deuce & Half 6x6 military truck... and even it had a Hard Time!! Same thing when we have to dig up small boulders, many times the tractor wasn't strong enough to get them up out of the hole even after we have them dug out. We spent a lot of time trying to slowly "work them up" out of the hole, kind of dangerous too as you have to drop boards or blocks underneith them as you work them up. So yes, I do understand your point about taking a tractor through the woods... but when I get the finances to get a bigger tractor, I'll Make the Paths Wider :-)

Your JD 310D can do some double duty on the farm. You can get a bale spike that attaches to the bucket so you can use it to move and load big bales. You can also get pallet forks that attach the same way and use it for a number of different things.

My most valuable piece of equipment on my place has to be my bobcat I clear brush with it dig post holes the thing I like most about it is all the implements are quick attach it's just 2 locking pins that are hydraulic controlled you can change attachments in about 10 seconds

Kubota MX5200D, perfect compact tractor for doing some work. Need at least 2ton to do work more efficiently (I would say 4Ton is best start for cleaning up trees etc), and that leaves the smaller BX series a bit limited unless it is only for tiny jobs. I have 8.5acres and have to cut drive ways, drains and maintain them, clear trees and push earth. Even at 2Ton, still isn't enough to drag the trees out without sawing them up. 110% on the loader with 4 in 1. Best investment ever. Also doubles as a crane or forklift when you need one.

@@HooDRidEWhiteY You can't go wrong with Kubota. Basically the Toyota of the tractor world. The older stuff is super over-engineered, very very strong and lasts forever if maintained. I have an old 1979 M7500DT and it's an absolute tank!! The ground breaking pressure it has is awesome. 4Litre, 4cyl 82HP engine, reliable and powerful. 3.5Tonne in stock trim. Has a RM Nell loader on it that brings it up to 4.3Tonne. Just want to upgrade to a 4in1 bucket now. Very happy with it. I would be just as happy with the new MX5200D, but new tractors are not cheap!

Hey Josh stoney ridge farmer.... it's the implements that really dictate the size of tractors which you need... especially PTO horsepower. As long as one tractor has a loader the second tractor does not need a loader.. my Father ran for many years with a 4020 John deere a Massey Ferguson 285 with a quick attach loader and a 165 Massey Ferguson. He needed three during silo filling time

The best tractor to buy is one in every size range. Having a single tractor is like doing all your wrenching jobs with an adjustable wrench. I started out with a John Deere 990, 43 HP machine but soon realized that I needed something to lift heavy things so I bought a Case MW24 30,000 pound pay loader. Next, I needed something smaller to get into tight spaces so I bought a John Deere 1025R. I have a small 3-point-hitch backhoe direct from China that I use with my John Deere 990 but it is not strong enough to remove stumps and I am afraid of breaking is so this year my birthday present to myself was a Caterpillar 235, 50 ton excavator with an extended stick. Oh, I have almost 3 acres! I love my toys! Next year maybe the D8 to plow the snow out of my driveway with.

You can get by with a dirt or scoop pan. Although they wont do as much work as a loader, you can get by with it and not have to take out a loan to pay for it. In the beginning, I did a lot of work with a $4000 tractor. I still do to be honest. You dont have to buy a 30k tractor and finance it for 8 years just to get work done. An old Ford 2000 to 4000 will last forever and can be bought for $4-6000.

Very true...just depends on how much work you're getting done..and what you're doing...I prefer the piece of mind knowing that I've done all my maintenence right...and I'd rather utilize my time to the best of my ability...I hear ya on the loan thing...man our tractor will be paid for in about a year ....over $650 per month!! Wow!!! at 0% finance...still cost my butt! Hopefully we'll have our land paid for in about a year and no debt!!!!!

You are right, you can get by without it, but if you have the money, its worth getting, as you will almost get the money back when you sell it. The other few things that are nice to have and you can (almost) get your money back on is 4wd and a cab with A/C.

I've got 20 acres... A 29k lb wheel loader 65 horse 2wd 28 2wd I use that big pig of a loader most it's hard to beat the power. I've got serious wind and drifts and that loader sure it cats meow when the snow is 5 foot deep. The first one was the 65 horse when I wanted 30 to 35 best thing i did was go bigger.

Love these videos. I only recently ran across your channel. My two cents and extremely limited knowledge on this subject is as follows. I own 8 acres in Iowa (hoping and praying that one of the farmers around me will let me buy 40+ from them). I have an all electric house and rather than pay twenty grand on a stand alone generator we decided to buy a PTO generator. Now the size of generator we need really limited how small we could go with our tractor purchase. So we ended up buying a John Deere 5055e. I am fully aware that the tractor is far too big for the property we have but it has just enough HP for our primary need.

Especially since price doesn't seem to make all that big a difference. I would have thought a bigger one would have easily cost double. I've learned that if we shop we'll, getting second hand on long wear items, can really save some money. Like you said, not only on the purchase, but on the resale. Good sounding advice.

I agree that the 4x4 and FEL are very important if you can afford it. We have a Kubota MX5200 that is 2wheel dr and has a FEL. There has been many times I needed 4x4 for traction. I have looked at that place in Newton as well, especially at their grapples. I think that is a really neat piece of equipment as well. Good Video Josh.

Looking to get a BX2680 here soon. Only have an acre, but lost of stuff that the lawn tractor can't do LOL. The BX is large enough to do some loader work, but small enough to fit in my barn, barn lot, and easy to keep stored out of the weather. I'll be getting a loader, roto-tiller, and box scraper with the initial tractor purchase....still on the fence about getting a mid-mount mower....my lawn tractor is only 3 years old, so it'll be fine for many years...but if I purchase the mower with the tractor new I save about $300 VS buying later if I decide that I want a mower....I may also pickup the front mount snow blower and front blade attachments at some point as well. The B-series is great, but for my needs a bit over-kill LOL....the BX is a great compromise between a lawn tractor and no tractor and for what I need it'll serve me extremely well for decades.

I think I would add availability on service , parts and implements for your tractor and budget! I have a 9n Ford w/ loader a IH 982 super w/tiller and snow blade . Here in Minnesota a diesel is not conducive to our climate and a gasoline is easier to maintain and easier to start in the extremely cold weather we have . All of your points are very valid! And talk about the different hitch systems !

A few years back went to a John Deere dealer was interested in a 3000 series tractor with FEL. I asked this salesman if he knew about problems with leaking front 4 wheel drive axles and he didn't. But I had read about so many issues about leaking front ends an the fact he didn't know about them. He treated us like were stupid or whatever. Not much better treatment from Kubota dealer either. We ended up buying an LS tractor. Never had heard of them before, till we moved south. It's been a good tractor, no problems, they are all pretty much made oversea's. You might need a quick hitch for the tractors makes life a little easier. My small tractor has cruise control. and a few nice other fetchers as well

I definitely think you need a loader. I will always need a loader for pushing snow in the winter. I purchased an older Case backhoe for 7k when I moved up here but all I am doing is clearing up and thinning up my land. I have a ton of trees and under brush that needs to be cleaned up, that's why I bought a backhoe. I also have an old Ford 8N that need some work but is a strong tractor when is running good. Thanks for the insight on some other tractors, I will need another tractor after my land is cleared and I start working part of it. :)

That rule to buy too big goes out the window if you have to mow around growing trees. My 35 hp TAFE (65" wide) proved unusable by the third year of growth and I had to buy a pair of tractors other guys thought were too small for their needs. First was a Bolens G174 (38" wide) and then a Kubota B7510 (44" wide). Both are pretty great. The Kubota gets the bulk of the hours because of its belly mower and the 35 hp does mainly loader work. The Bolens is very good in the woodlot for light jobs as it can go anywhere a draft horse can. The additional benefit of the Bolens is that it can run a 7.5 KW generator at a very low rate of diesel consumption, about half that of the hydraulic Kubota.

We have tractors with forklift masts on the front and you can't beat that straight lift, we have a loader that is good for moving dirt but we also have a tractor with an under axle blade and love it it digs dirt faster than the loader and you can get in more places than the loader tractor

thanks for this video. I'm watching this because I am doing some research and preparing to buy some land to homestead on. I am thinking about buying if I can 5 to 10 acres, just enough to keep me in food. That last tractor could be ideal

totally agree to the loader and also the final ranking i would like to have an 5065 as first tractor and like an mf135super or whatever perkins as second and i'm just doing like 10 acres (if i convert correctly) beside my regular work.

Good video. I've got a barn full of tractors and equipment to work 68 acres with around 16 acres cleared and the rest in woods. here's the list: JD 450G dozer JD 350B crawler loader JD310 TLB JD 2350 with fel JD 1250 JD 2030 Ford 2910 NH TC 55 with fel Yanmar 2110 Ford F-700 dump truck Implement list it too long to list as it asundry list for ditching machines augers ,blades ... More equipment at another location so I didn't count it:this list is at the farm only. Of this list only the NH TC 55 was bought new. I bought so many units because (A) I got them cheap because they needed work and (B) I turn a very good wrench. When you need a backhoe you need the backhoe. If renting it usually is questionable in condition and availability could be an issue. Economics is a no brainer: I've used the equipment for major clearing and construction and very conservative figures put me tens of thousands ahead of paying for the work to be done. Additionally I've bought cheap,repaired and sold at least a dozen other units that have netted an amount that covered the total cost of the units I've retained. Land management /farming is a business and running it as such can net a profit or a loss: depends upon your goal.

Do you need a TLB on a farm? Well, we do on our farm. We have a 1 km dirt road to maintain, have to level our 7 ha field that is messed up from rain. We have to dig channels to divert stormwater coming from the higher part of the farm to avoid the field to be messed up by the stormwater. Renting a TLB would have cost a fortune, we found a used CAT 416 C and it paid itself back. Also, I wanted one since I was 5. Paid it 180000 ZAR, something like 13000 dollar is suppose. Our tractor is a Ford 4600, main reason for this choice is the easy availability of Ford tractor spares in South Africa

We just bought 4 flat acres near Houston Tx. About 1/2 acre cleared the rest is wooded with mixed pine and oak and many of the trees are large. We want to thin out trees, build a perimeter fence, spread dirt to build up for a home site, maintain a 200 ft gravel drive, mow, build and maintain landscaping, and probably more that we haven't thought of yet. Tractor size and model recommendations please? Most dealers around here are JD, Kubota, and Mahindra to my knowledge. I don't have tractor experience but I'm generally very handy so I'm confident I can get up to speed.

First: Hire a forestry mulcher to come clean up the trees and brush....chip it all up....it's costly but well worth it...average about $1600 a day...one day should get ya set. Then a smaller tractor like the kubota in the video is probably enough for ya...check out mahindra...great warranty....good tractors #1 sold in the world. Heavy and not gonna break the bank. You probably wont put 200 hours a year on it...we have 200 acres and I work with my John Deere alot....4 years and pushing 5 now...still under 1000 hours....forestry mulcher to clean up brush is my #1 advice...search forestry mulcher on youtube..you'll see my video

Loaders are so amazingly handy. Just weld hooks to it and fab up some detachable forklift forks, and you're practically unstoppable. I won't ever own a tractor without a loader.

I have 65 acres. 20 acres cropland and 45 acres cow pastures. I am leaning towards a 40-55 hp utility tractor.

I'd go minimum 85hp my friend...if it were me. Something that can pull larger implements to save you time it's worth the additional expense

@@StoneyRidgeFarmer thanks for the direction, I will look at those then. I think the size of tractor vs HP throws me off. I have been paying attention to PTO HP and I have noticed some brands lack PTO HP in ratio to engine HP. Most are 7 to 9 HP less but I seen some that are 15 or more less. If you have any recommendations for a smaller sized tractor with the HP to get the work done I am open. Maybe it's odd but I don't want a tractor too large in size

we have a massey ferguson 35 thats never seen a loader in its life ! , we are small scale anything heavy like medium felled trees we just rope round the lift arms or linkage at the back and it works well

That's awesome....I just sold my 135 ....a very similar tractor.....If you're arueing that you dont "need" a loader...I'll agree with you....but if you bought another tractor I'd bet you'd want a loader and a 4X4...it's just super handy....I'd say I use the loader on the tractor about 1/3 of the time I'm on it
