The one on the fender well is the starter relay. It sends high amps to the starter. Protects the starter keyswitch. The solenoid on the starter motor pulls in to engage the starter pinion to the flywheel/flex plate.

Around my neck of the woods that was about a $300 to $500 truck. Definitely worth a hundred. I sold one a couple years ago for $300 just to get it off my property. The buyer was happy and I was happy with the deal. Served us both well. He will have a nice hot rod truck when he is finished and it is no longer taking up space on my property.

I love the 73-79 Ford Trucks. In 78 they still used round headlights, except for the ranger trim level like this one. This one's pretty well optioned out with all the trim, factory AC and the bedside toolbox. The fact that it still has the factory jack, the factory battery hold down, the factory radio, factory air cleaner with the preheater tube speaks to me that this truck has been maintained and not abused. Also, a trick with a bad solenoid, get some wire or a screwdriver and jump the two big posts with ignition on. My two sense, you would've been stupid to not buy it. Great purchase. If you're concerned about traction issues on the farm, there are several options. Being this has the ford 9 inch rear axle, there are many cost effective options to put a locker or other traction device in. That coupled with a good set of mud tires, you shouldn't have any problems.

Battery jumper order should be + on the dead batt, + on the good batt, then - on the good batt then a chassis GND to the dead vehicle. Then start the good batt vehicle then the dead. Disconnect jumper cables in the reverse order.

Could add (and do be cautious) if it won’t kick over you can put the negative from the frame to the - battery terminal to kick the dead battery over. Of course, this is recommended for gel-cell batteries only. Should kick over.

Hey you made a good buy. I had the 1976 model F250 that I bought new. It was a very reliable truck. After a small accident ( bagged 4 point buck) It sat in my back field waiting for me to get it back on the road for 4 years. I just did not have the time back then. I started it every so often . It sank right up to the rear end in the mud. Yet the frame on that truck was in better shape than the 1997 Chevy van ( bought that new also) that was only 4 years old at the time (2001). Unfortunately I let it go to a scraper for $100.00. Would like to have it now for projects I am working on. Enjoy & stay well, Joe Z.

Its cheap and It will fix a lot of reason crazy problems you may run into. Edit: duraspark ignition module

I am 72 now and have been pulling on wrenches for 60 years yet still I am not a mechanic but I have had three old style batteries literally blow up in my face. I have had plastic and battery acid blown into my eyes from making the "last" connection onto a gassing battery. Was much younger then...LOL. You are very correct to make the last connection away from either battery. The only grounded place on a vehicle that is capable of carrying "cranking" amperage is the engine block itself. An AC compressor brace or mounting bracket that is bolted directly to the block is a good place to make your last connection.

Definite miss, with the condition, location, and everything you showed, I'd go anywhere from $800-$1200 depending on how she drives. Sitting for a year, definitely should check out the entire brake system. I would flush the brake lines and take a good look at the fluid for rust and debris. For $100 you can't go wrong, even if you have to do a little work on it. I just recently bought a 92 Geo Metro Convertable for $700, needed a fuel pump, but was in beautiful condition. It will be a good gas saver for running around instead of my 5.8l V-8 Ford van.

Jason Johnson here in central Ky, 1200 to 1500 running with bad gas in it and needing brakes, minimum, to be trust worthy. After flushing the gas system, oil, filters, tires, brakes, lube job including packing the wheel bearings, replacement battery, plugs, ... It would then be a 5000 truck in these parts and you might pull a 500-700 profit.

Kevin Johnson I'd rather make it road safe before passing it along. If the buyer can't recognise that my labor rate was much-much cheaper than most, then they can get-on-down the road. I refuse to sell a vehicle to anyone running the same roads as my family and they might do the bare minimum to get an unsafe road on the streets. If I saw it wrapped around another vehicle in a few weeks, I would feel responsible for allowing it to hit the road in an unsafe manner. If it was going to someone I knew and knew beyond any doubt that they would make it safe to drive, not just able to drive, then I may sell it to them with the understanding that it is not road safe until they do a select few items of repair, with recommendations for other repairs to make it the most reliable it could be. But I would have to have a history with them.

Why do people have to shame? It's a 40 year old non running truck when the buyer shows up. The seller had given up on it quite a while ago. It's not a $2500 truck, not even close. It's a $100 truck because that's the price the seller accepted. Yeah, he got a nice deal but most vehicles that sit that long will need TLC (time and money) neither of which the seller was willing to invest any longer. I enjoyed the video, you are just jealous you didn't find it. Hey losers, STOP throwing shade because an enterprising guy might benefit from a little hustle.

Haters gonna hate that's for sure....and you are absolutely right..that truck would still be sitting there in the weeds...now it's back on the road and living an new life....this fella lives close to me and I scraped his driveway (500 yards long) last snow storm...he knows if he needs anything he can call me....he's now a close friend ....people been watching too much "American Pickers" where a person throws a price and they offer more for it......that's just to keep the masses at bay....people hate ya for getting a steal...not sure why....they take it personal like you're screwing them....oh well....still driving the $100 truck almost daily!

LOL Toyotas are used in some of the worst types of conditions throughout the world. The 3rd world uses nothing but Toyotas because they treat them like absolute shit yet they keep on working 100% of the time. American girly grocery hauler lol that is pretty funny considering we use an F150 and a Tundra for work. Our F150 needed its transmission replaced at 115,000 miles. The Tundra is at 231,000 miles without a single malfunction.

While reading the comments here, two things struck me, 1. most people were focusing their interest on getting a great deal like you made and 2. I was fascinated, amused, and disappointed in the variety of interpretations of value, cost, and price. As for my opinion, too often a deal comes down to who gets taken and who took advantage. For a transaction to be truly successful, it must enrich both parties and I think you fellas managed that splendidly. The arrangement you and the seller made was perfect. You were happy with the transaction, the seller was happy with the transaction, you didn't dishonor yourself or the seller, the seller didn't dishonor you or himself, you put an unused tool back to performing a useful purpose, the seller relieved himself of the burden of seeing his family member's truck slowly deteriorate and at the same time he knows he placed the truck in good hands. The snow clearing, etc are all good things to give of ourselves, are noble, neighborly pursuits, as well as being the right thing to do but at the end of the day, the most important event of all is that you each made a new friend.

Great find, only problem is, I’ve never seen an older ford truck with the solenoid on the starter. Always on the inner fender just behind the battery on the passenger side. If you look in the glovebox there probably was another solenoid in there. Great video though. I did like the yota vid! Also the a/c compressor on that truck makes an awesome air compressor. Put a well pump switch in line, you can use copper tubing( i perfer stainless) plumb your lines to a tank in the bed make sure of a pop off valve for safety and put a throttle set on and that compressor will keep up with any air tool at 1200rpm’s. Make sure you have a 15gal or larger air tank.

Gotta love them old odometers. 99999 miles then like magic resets to 0. I had an old 93 Ranger like that. All original and rolled it well over 300k. Selling it and the guy went nuts to see 22k on it amd wouldn't believe it had 300k since it was a michigan truck it's entire life with the normal cab corners with surface rust then the Swiss cheese rust around the beds fender wells. Frame was rust free. Original engine and trans just had a new clutch put in it a year prior to selling it. Along with new tires including the spare and suspension all around Was a good little v6 manual rwd truck.

Canadian Redneck TV In 1998 they introduced the 24valve Cummins which is still considered a 2nd gen up until 2002 which then introduced the 3rd gen. While the 24valve I can't say anything bad about although in not too familiar with them, but they do not have the unstoppable reputation like the 12valve Cummins.

Sir, you really need to get someone to show you how to jump start a vehicle. You pulled cranking amperage through the radiator cradle which only has a low amp ground connection suitable for the headlights and such, perhaps a 14 or 12 gauge wire. Second you should never have your truck running when you try to crank the dead truck because the heavy amp draw or shorted starter could and most likely will damage the alternator on the jump truck.

I've got an '84 F150 with 351w engine in it. It easily does burnouts without using the brake, but shorter ones of course. You'll get plenty of power from it, just don't take it on a road trip and expect decent gas mileage. My holley 4 barrel gives me about 11mpg when tuned properly.
