Just a point to make. A shear pin is NOT a hardened bolt. In fact, it's a soft bolt roughly equivalent to a Grade 1 or 2 bolt (the softest kind). Remember, a shear bolt is designed to shear off if placed under too much load. Replacing one with a hardened bolt - Grade 5 or higher - is just inviting major damage to the equipment and/or personal injury. Like you, I prefer slip clutches. Unfortunately, people do not service them regularly - at least once a year - and they tend to seize up and things break because the clutch plates have rusted together.
@Rattlerjake1
@Rattlerjake1 5 жыл бұрын
Actually, you're only half right. Most equipment that uses shear bolt require a grade 5. Anything less will shear too often. The other thing that is important is to tighten the shear bolt a tight as possible because a loose shear pin will break easily! Also, that chipper is built to be on the ground, not off the ground. And if it is too heavy and tends to lift the front of the tractor, invest in a few tractor weights for the front!

A Slip Clutch Adapter can be added inline to your PTO Shaft. It connects similar to a PTO Adapter. I used to sell them to customers for use with Brush Mowers that originally only had Shear Pins.

BX62 came with a standard grade 8 bolt. Works great. Have only snapped two because too large limbs. Tighten the bolt so there is friction between the parts. Slow down the RPM when starting. There is a lot of mass in that large flywheel to get moving.

My toolbox has, pliers, screwdriver, 2 x adjustable wrenches, a small crowbar, spare link pins and spare hitch pins, bigish hammer, an old heavy knife, some rags and a small watertight box with spare fuses(old camera film box). I also carry 2 spanners that fit the nuts on the clutch adjustment of the pto shaft, these come in handy when you don't use the implement too often as the clutch will stick with rust. Try engaging the pto before starting the tractor to ease the sudden spin up of the pto, although a clutched pto shaft would be beter in this case.

Recommend a straight (& possibly Phillips) screwdriver in your toolbox too. & make sure your screwdriver has a non-conductive handle. If it does, you can use it to jump across the contacts on your starter to start a tractor in a pinch (if the key switch isn't working). It's very important to make sure it's out of gear & the brakes engaged before you attempt this though.

Very cool! My wife helps me out a lot on our property. I eventually will probably get a wood chipper, but we aren't at that stage yet. We are just now clearing and planning to get power out to our place (35 acres in NE Florida). On a side note, when I was first watching the video I was thinking to myself "either Mrs. Stoney Ridge is tiny or you are huge". It turns out that it's a bit of both. Mrs. Stoney is a little smaller than me and my wife (we are both 5'7) and it looks like you are 6ft +. Keep up the great videos.
@ruyguy8888
@ruyguy8888 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Josh. I may advise against a slip clutch on the chipper. A shear bolt will cut the power instantaneously to the weighted wheel in the chipper in case it binds up hard. A slip clutch will slip if it binds but your tractor will continue to power through it, until you shut the pto off. Not saying it wouldn't work, however, the cost of a handful of shear bolts VS. a burnt out slip clutch may be costly. Cheers

I like the way that flywheel is designed...1) the knives don't go all the way to the edge, and therefore the slot in front of the knife is closed at the outermost diameter. That looks stronger to me than others I've seen that the slot is open all the way out. Flexing is a problem with any flywheel type chipper anyway and it looks a little stronger the way yours is made. 2) I like that twig breaker setup. My chipper does not have that and I hat that it doesn't chop all the little twigs at the tips of the branches. It does better if you can cramp a bunch in there at once, but you're still going to get sticks. Has it ever come close to stalling that massey out? My tractor is about the same size. I'm curious how much I can throw at it...it pulls a 6ft Bush hog with hi suction blades just fine through heavy stuff.

Josh, no matter what anyone else says, absolutely never put a harder grade bolt than what the manufacturer tells you to use. Also make sure that the shear bolt is the same exact same diameter as the original bolt. If using a smaller size only for a short time can alter the size of the hole causing more issues. Also be careful in using loctite unless you use a low heat release, especially in hard to get to places. I pull a 10' o.s. 210 sidewinder mower behind a Ford 5000 tractor and it only uses 2 grade 2 x 5/16 diameter shear bolts. Do what you wish, but if you deviate from the manufacturer specs could be costly.

I am curious, is that bed plate adjustable and able to be flipped side to side, end to end, and grindable? I know enough about chippers to know that the closer you keep that in spec, the smaller your chips will be, and the easier it will pull. It will also do less beating and banging on the machine and your tractor. You link doesn't provide a lot of info, but in the pics I see three bolts at the bottom of the chute that I assume perform this function.

The chipper drum is basically a humungous flywheel with a blade attached. I think you might have more success if you idle the tractor way down, gently release the clutch to engage the PTO at low revs, and gradually increase engine RPM to get the PTO up to rated speed. You might find that the tractor initially stalls, in which case restart it and try again with an increase of 50-100 RPM. The chipper when running relies on the inertia of the drum to do the chipping, and the tractor/PTO just replace the energy expended to maintain the inertia of the drum. It takes a hell of a lot of torque to get the drum up to speed, but very little to maintain the speed, unless the drum gets jammed with something that it can't process, in which case it will shear the fairly weak pin rather than damage the chipper, tractor or PTO shaft. So the solution is to engage the PTO gently at the minimum RPM that the tractor can run and actually turn the drum without stalling, then gradually build RPM. I doubt that a slip clutch shaft will help a lot, unless you set the clamp tension so low that it can slip a lot, in which case you will probably burn the clutch linings within 20hrs or so operating time, as it will also end up slipping regularly while chipping is in progress when the clamp tension is sett so low.

Hi Josh, I hope all is going well for you and Mrs. Stoney Ridge! The best advice I can give you is this,check for any obstructions inside the chipper that would prevent the chopper drum or knives from spinning freely. Other than that, always engage the pto at low engine rpm's, barely above idle. And always engage the pto slowly. On most newer tractors, they use some type of electric pull/push type switch to engage the pto,so this wouldn't apply to those. But either way, always engage at low engine speed. Hope this helps,and Happy farming! Whoooo!

A guy I know was operating his tractor without the pot guard and his 18 month old daughter was with him and she got the sleeve of her top caught in the pot which spin her around and broke her shoulder so badly that now in her twenties she still has no use of one arm at all it was a horrific nightmare that was so avoidable he had to drive the tractor through several fences onto the highway to flag down a car to get her some help at first it was thought that they would have to amputate her arm but they saved the arm but she never regained movement or feeling in the arm
