This video is about our experience observing, training, and managing the Kangal Shepherd Dog. Now I'm the first one to admit that I am no expert on Kangals, or any other type of Anatolian Shepherd; this video is meant only to give and honest account of my personal experience and hopefully add to the public discourse concerning purchasing and living with any one of the many Livestock Guardian Breeds.
For more information: www.ukcdogs.com/kangal-dog
The Kangal Dog is an ancient flock-guarding breed, thought to be related to the early mastiff-type dogs depicted in Assyrian art. The breed is named for the Kangal District of Sivas Province in Central Turkey where it probably originated. Although the breed has long been associated with the family of the Aga of Kangal, large landholders and chieftains, the majority are bred by villagers who take great pride in the dogs ability to guard their flocks of sheep and goats from such traditional predators as the wolf, bear, and jackal. The relative isolation of the Sivas-Kangal region has kept the Kangal Dog free of cross-breeding and has resulted in a natural breed of remarkable uniformity in appearance, disposition, and behavior. Despite its regional origin, many Turks consider the Kangal Dog as their national dog. Turkish government and academic institutions operate breeding kennels where Kangal Dogs are bred and pedigrees are carefully maintained. The Kangal Dog has even appeared on a Turkish postage stamp.
The Kangal Dog was first reported in European and North American canine literature by David and Judith Nelson, Americans who studied the dogs while resident in Turkey. The Nelsons imported their first Kangal Dog to the United States in 1985. This dog, and subsequent imports, provided the foundation for the Kangal Dog in the United States.
The Kangal Dog was recognized by the United Kennel Club in 1998.
I hope you guys enjoy!

I’m a 56 year old lady who owns a Kangel. She is 6 years old and I love watching these videos bc they are exactly like she is. I do live alone so I always have a big dog for protection and warning and this is my first time having one and I will always have one. She’s amazing. I love this breed and respect this breed so much. I really can appreciate them for who they are. She’s very special to me. Thank you for these great videos

my Kangal is 25 months old, I raised her from a pup on my farm. showed her the perimeter of the farm, and she stays within it. Super observant, she guards the chickens and livestock 24/7, and takes her job very seriously. Best dog I’ve had…few distractions, so she caught on to her training effortlessly. Great breed for large areas, she will do a patrol of the property line twice daily. I do love my Boo!

It's good seeing the calm/working side of this breed. So many clips are these snarling monsters of a beast lunging at the end of a big chain while making a grown man wish he wasn't holding the other end of that chain. It's good to see the "I'm just a dog too" side of the breed. Thanks Stonnie.

These dogs are generally gentle breeds but unfortunately Turkish people are trying to make them look intimidating by clipping the tail and ears off like it's a show-off. In their genetics they are always protective and loyal family dogs, but it still depends on the owner though. I hate seeing my people doing this to such majestic gentle dogs

Being Turkish, I remember being in Turkey and seeing a bunch of Kangals. These dogs are freaking HUGE! The second you enter someone’s property they definitely make their presence be known. Awesome dog but also scary....... the fact that you don’t know if they have been trained / socialized etc. bit nerve racking seeing one confronting you 😂 all in all they are working guard dogs that go above and beyond to protect its Territory even if that means dying for it. Fearless / ruthless / confident / vigilante / intimidating/ relaxed

I like your comment about "meeting in the middle". That is dead on correct with this breed. An owner of a Kangal needs to be the leader, but respect the dog. It is a very fine line. Too much direction and you will lose the dog, too little and the dog will take over. I like to think of myself as my Kangal's manager. I get the final say, but there is often negotiation as to how things are done.

We have a 2 year old, male Kangal, and he is the sweetest boy ever. They utilize their paws...a lot. Slapping and stomping. But very playfully in the house, to get attention and scritches. They move slowly and with purpose. When they decide to haul, they are extremely agile and can probably keep pace with a running pony. But they generally don't run, if there isn't a cause. They do trot a lot, though. They don't have a typical bark...it's kind of a combination hound dog howl combined with a true bark. Hard to describe. Ours does not bark often, so when he does, it is sudden, very loud, and can be startling. They have a very playful personality, and they need at least 2 hours of outdoor time or they will eat your house. As in the drywall, your furniture, etc. These are big, thinking dogs, and they can do a lot of damage in minutes if they get bored or restless. They will walk on a leash, but they definitely prefer running free in open spaces, so a farm or a fenced back yard is needed. Likewise, they were bred over 6,000 years to hunt for themselves on the open plain. Despite their size, they don't need many calories to maintain weight. (They get fat, quick.) That being said, they must be genetically eired to eat ALL the food, wherever they find it. This includes your kitchen counter, which they can easily reach. It seems that no amount of training stops this, so don't leave food out on the counter when you leave the house. It will not be there when you get back, no matter how much food is in their bowl. They are very respectful, though, about letting you fill and take their food bowl. They quickly defer to you by walking away to a respectful distance if you mess with their bowl. And they shed...a LOT. So much so that they easily choke out a rumba every day, no matter how much you brush them. In the spring and fall, forget it...it is ceiling to floor hair. (We use the furminator, too, which works best on thrir coat.) They love children, and adopt them as "livestock" to be protected. Aggression is not their first go-to. They stand between a threat and whomever they are protecting first, and watch. They use their own bodies as shields, first. They very much communicate with body language and, because of this, they pay very careful attention to the body language of others around them. If a threat makes what they think is the "wrong move", then it is go-time, howling bark and all. They absolutely love human interaction and belly rubs.

We have two Kangle's ( Cricket and Mary Tyler) on our farm in Ohio. In the past, we had some problems with predators..Coyotes, some feral hogs and the rare occasion Panther, Mountain lion. After 2 years of the pair being on the property (we raise beef cattle) we have NO problems....when I say no problems I mean None. They are great with the Grand children and always on the guard, So be aware that if you are looking at this breed for protection, they need lots of room to run, they are extremely protective and can be unbelievably strong. Having said that I wouldn't take a dollar and a quarter for either.

dog newbie here, do you have to train them so they protect the live stock and attack predators? or is it a natural instinct
@john9842
@john9842 3 жыл бұрын
@@ciscoplank8107 Mostly natural, however, they have to be with the livestock on a regular basis. For example, some friends of ours have one, we have to pen our dogs when he comes over. Now, he has a good time running and playing but he doesn't know what his job is. He's a city dog. My dogs go with me everywhere on the farm and some trips to town. Occasionally, I leave them out with the herd all night (weather permitting) and they stay back away from the herd, but the herd is always in their sight, that's the way they were raised. I know your next question..have you ever had one take on another animal? Yes...final score House 2 predator 0. Dogs are like people, we are a product of our past. If you are a first time dog owner my advice is to go to someone that has them...You'll soon find out that these are very powerful dogs, they will not back down. This can be a problem if they are left alone to raise themselves..they must have boundaries, they have to understand you are the pack leader.

@@john9842 Hmmmm, interesting, I have recently bought a farm and soon I will be raising some cattle and sheep, I live in northern of british colombia, Canada, and there are a lot of wolves, coyotes, black bears, sometimes cougars. So I figured out I'm gonna need some dogs. I have heard that the Kangals are very independent and good shepherd dogs in general, I know they are huge and powerful but I'm willing to risk it considering I have never owned a dog before, so... uhhh, I'm gonna need some help. I have a ton of questions, It would be greatly appreciated if you answer them cuz I know nothing about dogs. 😅😅 So they don't need training at all to protect the cattle and sheep? I buy them as puppies, feed them, take care, spend time with them, and make them get used to the livestock, and they will automatically guard? How will they know what they should guard against and what not? Is there special food to feed them from the supermarket, or just meat and chicken? Any vitamin pills they need to take? How often should I take them to the vet? Any potential health issues they might come across? Do I keep them outside all the time, even during the winter (btw its gets cold here, sometimes it can reach up to -20 C)? Do I have to put a leash on them and walk them everyday, or is them running around freely in the acreage enough? Is it best if they are as a pack (3 or 4 kangals together)? If yes, is it better if they are siblings? Does it matter if they are male or female? Sorry, I know it's a lot but I'm extremely intrigued 😇

My dog is a Black Mouth Cur, Rhodesian Ridgeback and Kangal mix.... We rescued him from the shelter when he was 12 months old. He was dropped off at the shelter 4 times before I gave him his forever home. He's fearless, high energy, Powerful, intelligent, eager to learn. I used to have a coyote dog and then a chow mix before "Odin". I'm used to an independent strong dog. I work at home and he spends all day and night with me everyday. It's a Huge responsibility unless it truly fits into your active lifestyle. If you work a 9 to five or live in an apartment then you should consider an easy couch potato dog that doesn't mind spending lots of time alone. An intense, intelligent and powerful dog is Not for you and it's not fair to the animal. He's expensive. He eats real meat everyday and high quality kibble. We go on huge walks everyday and woods adventures when we can. It's almost more like a roommate than a pet. On the other hand, he's by myside day and night. I always feel very safe. I haven't seen another dog that he was afraid of in the least. He stays completely calm. If anyone ever tried to hurt me I'm sure it would be a crazy mistake. I do everything that I can to socialize him and make him my sweet boy. His natural hunting and guarding instinct is extremely strong. He loves the family like his own pack. I'm trying to say that unless you really have time and you truly love it then don't get stars in you eyes. I'm Shannon and he's Odin. We're a team. It's a whole lifestyle choice. Think really hard before you get a Kangal or a Kangal mix like mine. It is something very special but it's also a big deal.

I own an Anatolian shepherd. When you said "biological predisposition " I subscribed. You obviously know how to o evaluate a dog's personality as well. I agree these dogs have a mind of their own. Do not tie them up with rope! Those teeth will go through rope like a knife through butter.

One story I have about a Labrador is the dog knew you had to turn the door knob to open the door. He would literally mark a door knob up with teeth marks trying to turn the knob, by bite down on the knob and turning it with his teeth! Tell me that dog wasn’t paying attention! Truly an intelligent animal! Thanks for getting back to me, I really appreciate it!

Great video and your calm demeanor with the dogs is excellent. We have a boy Anatolian mix (not sure with what) who looks a lot like the lady dog your working with, just more freckled black muzzle. Your general observance of the dogs exactly matches his temperament. Independent (kinda stubborn), super alert, likes woman & kids and our family - super protective. Small boy by Kangal standards at 100 lbs, but tall and full neck. Only real downfall is his constant shedding since he’s in and out of our house. 👍🏽

Her disposition is fantastic, I really dig how detached she is yet doing everything on the obstacle course almost as in passing and I really like the ears left intact. America is lagging behind on abandoning the custom of docking ears and tail. I'm so sweet on this breed after a life long obsession with Dobermans She's beautiful.

I have to say this was the best dog video I’ve seen for ages! Always been fascinated with Kangal’s and you broke down her behaviour and temperament down perfectly. Also make me think about how my Cane Corso reacts to his environment as well! He sniffs the same things always and always goes out in front and checks back as well. Maybe not quite as diligently as your Kangle but it’s there. Would love to get a kangal one day but you need a very large space for them.

A good friend of mine has an Anatolian shepherd named Jaeger. She has been doing scent work & tracking/trailing with him for many years. (I'm in the same groups with my Siberian Huskies 😊) Jaeger is excellent in both types of nose work. We always observe how he doesn't waste a single calorie of energy when he's working. He's very deliberate. So it's extra fun when he starts to prance a little after a successful search. My male Siberian, who is not the most confident dog in the world, is terrified of Jaeger. 😅 I think your video is spot on about theses dogs.

I have a Great Pyrenees / Saint Bernard mix that has a lot of similar traits! Especially the watching quality...Frida is very observant of her environment and you can see her actively deciding whether something is a threat or not. I always say my two boxers are the alarm dogs (all bark no bite...actually vicious barking til whatever it is gets too close, then hiding behind me LOL ) but Frida is the quiet protector. If she barks, I know there's something going down I need to check out!
