Protection Dog or Scared Dog 3 | Was Uncle Stonnie Wrong?

Uncle Stonnie addresses comments from last weekend's video about Bella, an under socialized German Shepherd Dog. This is the third video in a series following Bella's progress over the next month and talking about Stonnie's approach to proper protection/guard dog socialization and management.
Dogs like Bella are bred to be a family protectors and loyal companions. Unfortunately, breeding dogs to be protective is a double edged sword. On the one hand the dogs come pre programmed with a tendency to bond closely with people and animals with whom they come in contact with early, but on the other hand they are very skeptical (afraid) of people and animals that they have not been contact with during their formative developmental stages.
All too often, the lack of early socialization leads to fear based aggression which makes the dogs and owners the scourge of their neighborhoods.
Over the next few weeks Stonnie is going to talk about techniques and strategies to prevent, and/or treat, the common types of behavioral issues that pop up with guard dog breeds.

Stonnie, I have a 2 yr. old, (3 yrs. next month) adopted this May who is very much like Bella. She is good with people but very dog reactive. Don't know a thing about her background except that there have been 3 previous owners ( UGH), her parents have working line lineage and she's had at least one litter of pups. She is doing well on the leash with the "Leave It" command. Lunging and growling at other dogs on leash has gone from 100% to about 20% consistently. I am pleased and she is so happy when she is successful with this! I sure wish you took this age dog. I'd sign her up immediately! I love this dog and want her to have a happy life. But she needs more exposure to other dogs which I don't feel comfortable doing... and don't like the idea of dog parks. I like your method and philosophy. I am older but active. We walk 1-3 miles most days. It's a challenge living in the city. I have been seriously considering finding a rural property in order to give her the freedom and learning experiences she needs. I've had rough collies in the past. I grew up with a few GS. My father adored the breed.But -- I knew while working full time I'd never give a GS the exercise and attention it requires. I am so concerned about her not hurting other dogs. She recently got out the front door accidently and bit a passing dog in our front yard. Would not let go. So she must have been trained to do this? (or is it natural for the breed?) She came afraid of storms and loud noises, but her fear is less than it was. I have not babied her on these problems. The vet wants to put her on Prozac and is very adamant she needs to see a behaviorist so that the agresssion does not escalate. She's never growled at me or our elderly Boston terrier/pug mix. She loves her kennel, and stops at the door ALWAYS to have her feet wiped before entering the house. I LOVE THIS DOG!! Can you give any comment that will direct me in how to get this dog socialized? Would you take her? I know that's doubtful...but it never hurts to ask.

Stonnie, I agree with you 100%. It breaks my heart to see people get working dog breeds and keep them in a crate for 12 hrs a day and use them solely as fashion accessories. Then the same folks wonder why the dog is always anxious and destructive when they let them out. People are so concerned with internet optics and how they look on Instagram they forget that the dog is a living creature with wants and desires even if they are just simple needs such as going for a nice walk or swim to get their energy out. Keep up the good work man!

I enjoy your rants because they are so true! I received so much bad advice when my (now old) working dog mix was young. And of course I was in over my head not knowing what I was getting into with her. As soon as I stopped trying to make her act like an Instagram ready showdog and just let her be a DOG, things got so much better. She has been a great adventure buddy, companion and protector over the years, and all I had to do was let a dog be a dog.

I think I'm a competent trainer also, similar style, but I'm unbelievably jealous of your facility. People who visit think I have a lot of space, but once I hit about 8 big dogs, it starts feeling small to me (especially when the pool is out). Your space puts mine to shame. Uncle Stonnie, you are my mentor. I’ve got my stepdaughter walking a dog for an elderly woman and I teach the girl how to keep it on a long leash in the condo neighborhood and keep it fun for the dog, a Chow Chow (6 y.o.) and let get the “bugs” out. He goes out in front, sniffs and pees on every bush but in ten minutes his tail is level and the tongue gets longer and now he’s following, watching us and coming when called back. No fuss, no conflict and my daughter gains a great friend and the dog has a good leader.😀

I bought a 13 week old GSP that hadn’t been socialized. He bark at every dog he saw when I took him to stores. I made so many training mistakes with him. I wish I would have watched your videos before I purchased him. He ended up getting through our fence and rough played with a lamb and killed it. I had to find a new home for him. At about 15:00 in this dog on the picnic table, shows how remarkable this concept is. I’m working with a dog now Stonnie would call a covid dog. Two weeks ago he was snarling at the end of the lead at everything. We worked the mentor dog process with lots of hike and run in the woods. Last weeks video was adding more dogs, I thought where am I going to get more dogs to add in? Then my neighbor asked me if I would watch his two dogs while they had an appliance delivered, Ha! I added two more dogs for the afternoon. Then another got added as a peer group dog, we had a chance encounter on the trail, totally surprised, not planned at all. No snarl, no warning bark, just “ who is this? do you want to run and chase? I was so happy with this today. I can see now we are moving in a positive direction very rapidly. When I got this dog to take care of for a year, I felt like “that guy, the idiot neighbor with the poorly trained dog” . I’m not “That guy” anymore, because this is happening. One more thing, building on what the dog does right is such a great concept, it has made me feel differently about our training since, this one right thing today turned into two by the afternoon, then six the following day. A Mentor dog and feeding the positive outcomes, just huge concepts for me now. Thanks again, don’t worry about the idiots, they are everywhere, just keep doing what you are doing, it’s helping me deal with a situation I had no idea how to handle.

You are my favorite channel - just common sense and building confidence so formal training is easy - i live in Alberta or i would love to come to your kennels and train my new aussie puppy - i love that you do not turn your dogs into the new kind of dog that takes 10 days just to put a collar on and then another 10 for the leash. I lost my patience with some you tube trainers i dont have 2 weeks just to get a collar on. They never allow their puppies to get to know the world that they live in - without micro management. They are never allowed off leash because they forgot to teach them to come when they are called. And the biggest thing that is missing is having fun with your dog on their journey. I feel most trainers are so stressed about the perfection of a sit that they pass it on to their students and their dogs and all fun is lost.

I bought a 4 month old mini-labradoodle at the end of April. I named her Lola. Your videos helped inspire me to "train her like a big dog." We walk on a leash for a mile and a half every morning then usually play some fetch. After work and on weekends we visit parks for a variety of environmental socialization. We walk on concrete, asphalt, bricks, dirt, gravel, wooden bridges, metal wheel chair ramps, stairways, boat ramps, etc. We go to the dog park to socialize with other dogs, starting out by just sitting on a bench and watching them play, then eventually following them around, and now my puppy teases them into chasing her... and she is quite the sprinter. We have had a few swimming lessons where I wade out knee deep into the water, and Lola swims after me. Last weekend I took Lola on her first tent camping adventure. My dog is currently 8 months old. I feel that we still need to work on socialization with meeting new people and children. I have overlooked the opportunity to walk her through Home Depot, Lowes, or Tractor Supply. We might also plan to spend time near a playground where she can listen to children squeal and giggle and jump around. Lola can be very reactive in situations where she sees things that are unexpected. Her reactivity can lead to excessive barking. People have suggested anti-barking shock collars, but that seems wrong to me and likely to only increase my dog's negative association with whatever she is reacting to. I believe that continuing to expose her to new situations and rewarding her calm attentive behavior will lead to Lola becoming my "go anywhere dog." much like my previous mutt, Sunny, was before he passed away.

I watch a lot of dog training videos from all the named trainers on KZbin. If I had the money to send my pup to any trainer in the country, I would send him to you without doubt. I don’t know what kind of comments you got that set you off because I don’t read other people’s comments I frankly don’t care what they say and I have little interest in them reading mine. @@marnabro You are not that old. I just got a black lab pup and he is a lot of motivation. If you feel you need a dog, get a dog. You are at the best time in life to have one. When in your life have you ever had the amount of time you have now to devote to a relationship with a dog. My guess is never. As Stonnie says, just try to find one that matches your lifestyle. It is damn hard to live without a dog.

I have watched nearly all of your training videos- I am impressed with the practicality of your training, the simplicity of commands, and the way you seek to integrate the dogs in everyday life. I have a small companion (toy breed) dog. I got him when he was 2 years; in December he'll be four. He is highly reactive to other animals, especially dogs. He knew nothing when I got him but he was housebroken. I worked with him on basic obedience and introduced him to some agility obstacles in an effort to increase his confidence. He's a pretty good learner but his reactivity remained. It wasn't until I found your channel that I realized he needed more safe exposure to other dogs, not less. Since I don't have access to any mentor dogs, his exposure now consists of watching other dogs from a distance and rewarding him when he doesn't go bonkers and voluntarily focuses on me. He is making progress, albeit slowly. I realize my situation is not ideal: handicapped, old, no balance and in need of a mobility aid for walking. But as much as I can, I make sure he's given opportunities to experience life with me. I likely would have never developed my current technique without having watched your videos. My little dustball 😁 may never be as easy going around dogs as I would wish, but if I can help him stop lunging at dogs when out walking, I will count myself lucky. Keep up the good work and keep the videos coming. 😀💕👏👏🐾

Great video. I teach all puppies a structured obedience routine but once they catch on I drop that...and then I just teach them life and how those things they learned apply to life. I never tell my pack to 'down/stay' in the house...the down with duration as a puppy already taught them how to be calm so as soon as we come back in the house they all just find a spot and lay calmly. I've been told my dogs are bored by folks that can't tell the difference between calm and bored...they are high drive so will/can go from 0 to 100 in a split second when we are ready for an adventure but I don't want 100 when I am trying to do something else

Makes a ton of sense, Stonnie. Pretty much the same thing with people; physical movement has a ton of psychological benefit. As some who eventually plans on becoming a clinical psychologist, I have really been considering trying to specialize, to a degree, in movement based therapy. I think a lot of psychological problems could be eliminated or improved upon with movement, time spent in nature, exposure to a broader range of situations, and other lifestyle based interventions. It consistently amazes me how many parallels there are between human and dog behavior and training. Thanks for the great info, Stonnie!

I have found your videos very helpful. I had planned on getting a Chow Chow (and have had several or Chow Chow mixes over the years. I've had very good luck with them. A good friend of mine contacted me saying someone she worked with was wanting to find her puppy a new home. I was told the dog was a German Shepard. Of course she was living in an apartment. I eventually took the dog hoping I could ease her into the family. Well this dog has turned out to be a Belgian Malinois. She became my nightmare. Eventually I got her in a training program and she is improved. Your KZbin videos have been very eye opening for me. Of course with Covid-19 lockdown and few visitors socializing was very little. Your videos have been so helpful to me. I've also had a friend that I made watch one to make her realize what she could when she came to our house. Thank you!

I love this channel, Stonnie you saved me from making a big mistake and in turn - a dogs life. I was contemplating getting a Malinois, I have owned GS before, I’ve worked alongside the Malinois breed - point is, I do know these dogs BUT …… like children, the “work” and commitment they take is forgettable. I relate to straight talk and that’s why I love this channel - who wants to be bullshitted to when making a decision like this - NOT ME! Thanks Stonnie. I will be waiting to get my Malinois. I so wish I had known what you have described in these 3 Sheppard videos. My last Sheppard past away 3 weeks ago today.I had her for 10 years.at age 4 she was attacked by fear aggressive dogs twice in less than a month. At that point she became just as aggressive as they were biting an innocent lab and cost me $500. I then tried to go to a dog behaviorist and even willing to pay 100's of dollars that I could hardly afford and got nowhere. My dog was violent at the sight of any dog. I had lost my 22 year career and my home and for a time we were in an apartment. I soon bought a mobile home and had a fence built with a play area to exercise her and yes a tired dog IS a good dog. I lost all hope of being able to socialize her, and I tried everything. Finally she and I spent the last 4 years of her life in solitary confinement wearing fashions by Hannibal Lecter (rubber muzzle, harness, double clipped leash) to take her into the vet, only after having them clear the lobby, they would call us in from the car. She was never alone in the back yard, she was always on a leash as a portion of the fence could only be 4 feet high. How soon would something happen and I get sued? I never knew that fear was the foundation of her basic makeup. Alerting at hearing a dog almost out of my hearing range blocks away. I never knew Sheppards were predisposed to such a low tolerance for fear compared to labs, really a lab? So embarrassing! No wonder we had the problems we had. So there was a solution I didn't know about. That makes me so incredibly sad and very angry, but I hope someone reading this will learn from my story and hear your decisive advice and warnings. Thank you for those videos.

Hi Stonie, Your spot on Stoney in this 3 part series. I train nothing but malinois. I agree with you100%. The malinois has become a fad dog. There are alot in our local so cal shelters. A Belgian Malinois is too much dog for 80 % of folks. Thank you uncle Stonie.

I love your vidéos. It is so true. Finally when the dog come back when you call him it's the most important thing and it's hard. We have a two years malinois girl. It's the first time we have this kind of dog and it's a pleasure but we still don't have the key when she sees a rabbit or a cat. But we try to keep her focus on us with toys sometimes it works sometimes not. Still working on it. During three months from April to July we have to keep the dogs on leash in the forest because of the births of animals. So we avoid forest because I cannot imagine to have a walk with my dogs only on leash. Once again thank you for your vidéos . I like the way you are with the dogs.

I recently watched your video on how you prepare dogs for high distraction with Malone from 2 years ago. You showed several different types of dogs and their training needs. You showed a Malinois Shepherd that has such a beautiful tail, just like a lion's! You are so right about herding dogs having that preprogramming for patterns! I'm always saying that my GSD/heeler mix has trained herself more than I've trained her! Sometimes though that trait can be a double edged sword, they can have a mind of their own if you don't stay 3 steps ahead! I just wanted to say that I really appreciate and admire the calm, in no rush yet also in control, confident yet humble, "everything is alright" demeanor you have about you and with the dogs. I'm sure that has a huge influence on your success with them! You have a very keen sense for what dogs are about and their essence. Great admiration for that! I don't know if you are Christian, but you seem to embody the spirit of what Christ's message was about. Love life, your neighbor, and have respect and humility for the Creation you are a part of. Your concept of training dogs is really pretty much applicable to any aspect of life in general. I am more prone to being anxious and over controlling and have been sensing that I really need to change my perspective to be more "make a decision and deal with the consequences" and move forward rather than beating myself up about mistakes and dwelling on them. It has been beautiful to watch this attitude and perspective play out in your training with dogs!

There are so many different types of dog owners and so many different 'levels' of training for cometition etc. In my opinion as a life long dog owner, sometimes breeder and 'casual' competitor what Stonnie does and advocates is vital to every dog's life, no matter what the end goal of the owner is.

Stonnie - you are the best. I was fortunate to find your videos just before we brought home our 8 week old lab pup and so glad i did! He’s still a handful sometimes (five months) but because of your teaching I know it’s because he’s not getting enough stimulation and activity and I need to ramp it up- in other words that’s on ME, not him. I’ve always said “research your breed before you get a dog!!!” And you preach the same! You don’t bring home an athletic, retrieving dog and try to turn it into a Bichon! We have a bored out of her mind border collie next door who barks constantly because she doesn’t get to do what she was bred to do. Thank you for sharing your knowledge of dogs with us. All anyone has to do is look at that pack of dogs in any of your videos to see how happy they all are to see you absolutely know what you’re talking about.

I like what your saying. I was given a puppy and told it was a small dog mix. I expected something like a Bichon and ended up with a Mal-mix. lol. I had to laugh the first time I heard Stonnie say to not get dogs that don’t fit your lifestyle because my lifestyle totally changed with my beloved malinois, now six years. He has unknowingly kept me sane when I wanted to pull my hair out while training. Thanks to Stonnie I learned what mine needed, too. Best wishes to you and your lab!
