Protection Dog Or Scared Dog 4 | Dog Training Strategy - Desensitization Via Progressive Exposure

Join Uncle stonnie as he demonstrates an awesome dog training strategy with Bella, an under socialized German Shepherd Dog and talks about the value of desensitization via progressive exposure, or what he calls Bum Training. This is the fourth video in a series following Bella's progress over her boarding stay and talking about Stonnie's approach to proper protection/guard dog socialization and management.
Dogs like Bella are bred to be a family protectors and loyal companions. Unfortunately, breeding dogs to be protective is a double edged sword. On the one hand the dogs come pre-programmed with a tendency to bond closely with people and animals with whom they come in contact with early, but on the other hand they are very skeptical (afraid) of people and animals that they have not been contact with during their formative developmental stages.
All too often, the lack of early socialization leads to fear based aggression which makes the dogs and owners the scourge of their neighborhoods.
Over the next few weeks Stonnie is going to talk about techniques and strategies to prevent, and/or treat, the common types of behavioral issues that pop up with guard dog breeds.

Yeah, I always get so sad seeing a bum begging with a dog. They can’t even take care of themselves so how do they take care of the dog? I guess the dog brings in sympathy money.

@@fmknokey can be true but when you are lonely and homeless. sometimes your dogs come with you when you loose a home. As well, dogs and other animals provide a sense of companionship which people who are alone and cold and wet all the time desire. It may be a selfish act but humans are selfish everyday, like how you assume its a choice for the majority of homeless people to be homeless and to choose into bringing their pets with them.

I just read my original post from 10 months ago. It was cold and cruel. I apologize. I think it came from a time when I had rescued a dog that had come from a homeless man. The man had an alcohol and drug problem. He would tie the dog up, go drinking and forget where he left his dog. The dog was terribly abused. He was a sweet dog that didn’t deserve that. I still stay by, if you can’t take care of yourself, how you going to take care of a dog?

I love the bum training concept so much. It's when we stress, worry, and let our pride get in the way that our dogs develop stresses and worries of their own. Just relax, spend lots of time wandering around doing stuff with your four-legged, not caring what people will think or say and the rest will take of itself.

Wow! Saw the video today, was super excited how simply you explained this method. So, we went out to “bum train”. I had errands and utilized it to train. We hit Home Depot and where we walk daily they were setting up a carnival event which was “the jackpot”. We sat and watched them set up, walked up the steps and ramps to every ride, walked the strip mall, watched a remote “speedboat” on the lake and more. Bum training, what an easy way to remind yourself to go out with your dog and wander around. Great channel, love how you train your dogs. We're getting a yellow lab pup the 1st week in Dec. Our 5 year old lab died suddenly last Thanksgiving day. I've been watching your channel for the past 10 months now getting ready for our new pup. We live on 16 acres of land in Indiana, with a creek and 1/4 acre pond so plenty of room for puppy adventures. I hope I can get our pup to respond as well as your dogs do to this training method.

My husband and I have two retired police dogs living in our home. They are both sensitive to sounds. One, who is my husband’s retired working police dog, and is usually attached to his hip, will run off to her safe place when he starts drilling to put up a shelf! The other can’t stay in the room when I put the vacuum round. You talk SO much sense!

Great video, Stonnie. Working with my fearful poodle mix. I brought him home 2 months before Covid hit and unfortunately wasn’t able to “bum” around with him much since he had terrible car sickness as a pup. I rescued a black female lab mix and am building a training course similar to yours, but smaller, to increase her self confidence and basic commands. She goes with me when I shop at Walmart, Home Depot and is doing better walking in crowds… We go hiking, river walking… I have learned a lot from u , TU for doing so many informative videos! Great point stonnie! We have a 4 month old lab mix who was absolutely scared of sounds and people and cars. We live in metro Atlanta and in the city. Literally our 4 month old and 13 year old boxer mix just walk around and there are all kinds of people sounds etc. Now our puppy walks and almost completely un phased and confident. His tail is relaxed and not tucked, sniffing things and being a dog. Now he wants to say hi to everyone! So true Stonnie so true about just being outside with your pets.

With my four dogs its more than sit stay etc. It's about showing them all things like my neighbors horses, the cows, and we have all kinds of equipment on our farm so they experience all kinds of distractions. This is insane, I have met SO MANY BUMS with dogs who ignored me, but were friendly. No leash, but never chased cars or ran in the road. They were the PERFECT dog. Never chased anything, no bikes, no deer, no kids. And I am like, HOW?

I have friends that puppy walk for guide dogs for the blind. They do exactly this (along with basic obedience) until the dog is old enough for the specialist guiding training. They allowed by law to take the dog anywhere a guide dog can go. They do it for free btw

Enjoyed this video, Stonnie. In town we see people that my 'farm dog' pup is both attracted to and afraid of at the same time, and she barks at them. Holding her back from them seems to make her bark more. I think holding her back makes her more afraid AND want to go after them even more. Those two inclinations seem to be simultaneous. Maybe we need to start off bum training inside a library where people are sitting quietly. Did go to the library yesterday, and noted that loud barks tend to get people shooting straight up from their chairs and the librarians' hair standing on end. (Malinois-pit bull cross pup is also part literary critic, apparently.)

This is great advice and made me realise that what I've been unconsciously doing this past year with my undersocialised rescue terrier mix dog makes sense! He went from overreacting and straight up flipping out about 20-25 times a day, both indoor and outside, to maybe a couple of barks every second day. So, yay for the bum method! I've wondered many times how come that punkabbestia (that's Italian for maybe "gutter punks" in English? Not sure😉) have so well behaved dogs😍

I remember going to a 3 day event. The weather turned rainy and out came the unbrellas. Well some of the horses had a melt down. I heard a rider fussing and I said you need to umbrella train your horse. I was 17. He looked at me like I had 2 heads. I had a friend that worked at the horse park and was in charge of the carriage horses. The week before the derby parade she palyed marching band music in the barn. Everyone thought she was crazy. Her's were the only ones that didn't blow up. I get your point. LOL

Bum training is like when we were kids. Our Dogs went where we went, except School. Rode around on our bikes and the Dogs followed. Don't remember many unsocialized dogs back then. Leash law and Dog lic just started out in our town. People were pissed about the new $3.00 Dog license so the City sent a worker to knock on every door to make sure you bought the license.

I love your channel!! Have been a subscriber 2 years now. I LOOK like an old lady BUM when out with my super gorgeous GSD. We live half way up a mountain on remote Scottish island. If I had retail outlets as diverse as that I'd park my campervan there for a month. At home she wears an ecollar to protect the sheep [everywhere, unfenced[ and wildlife. That's all we see. walking one day two supersonic USAF jets practicing low level manoeuvres passed BELOW us up the sound, BOY what a BANG as they passed!! Kai never flinched!! Several years ago you guy developed the stealth helicopter, used our island for trials. Out riding my horse [Western, of course] coming to the top of a steep hill, I felt a whoop whoop in the air [no sound], as I breasted the top came, literally face to face with a b....dy great chopper flying 5ft off the ground. The Pilot had some fright!! Steeply banked away. Horse just shook his head, carried on.

Uncle Stonnie you are living the dream... my dream of hanging with dogs all day and being able to earn a living at it. I see we are similar in that we both are observers of behavior whether its people or animals. Growing up I learned that "street" dogs were smarter than many people realized... they observe their surroundings and adjust to it. That's why socialization works so well... especially at an early age. One piece of advice I often offer to dog owners who are interested in socializing their dogs is to take them to outdoor arts and crafts fairs. They will get to meet lots of different types of people there... little people and big people, people of all races, people in big hats, people with walkers or canes or in wheel chairs, smokers and old people who typically have characteristic odors associated with them, people with strange walking gates, kids with balloons, there's typically fluttering streamers and spinning pin-wheels, loud sounds and music, adults and children eating foods and laughing and running around... but best of all there are people who will want to pet the dog... especially if it is a younger puppy. Start at a distance and work closer as the dog shows you it can handle more novelty. One other thing Stonnie... I see that "arm-chair" dog trainers really bother you... I'm surprised that you aren't more immune to their inane commentaries. First off, no two dog trainers are ever going to agree on everything... but arm-chair dog trainers just make stuff up as they go along and so are not worth even addressing because their true contact with dogs is so limited. We can only draw upon our personal experiences to learn from and so less experiences mean greater possibilities for faulty conclusions. That's where I've become jealous of your lifestyle... you have so much greater opportunities to experience dog behaviors over time and watch them adjust to their experiences ...thus your advice is often practical. I, on the other hand, have mostly experience from just friends' dogs and my many hours spent at dog parks and dog beaches observing and sometimes interacting. Though I'm not a subscriber to your channel, its now showing up more in my KZbin recommendations, so I'll be watching more... just keep 'em coming.

I just pick and choose from whatever is recommended and only occasionally search for a specific topic which then drives my recommendations... I watch dog related stuff from time to time and I guess that's how I stumbled across you videos to begin with so now you appear in my recommendations. If I subscribed to everything I like to watch I'd not have any time left to live my life. I'm 71 and still quite active... even so statistically there's not much time left for me to live so I do it outside as much as possible and thus am away from my computer. Bottom line is I've always loved dogs and am open for discovering new ways to appreciate them. I'll keep tuning in to see what you're up to from time to time. Thanks for caring about dogs.

We are lucky enough to live next to 2k acres of woods, but only about 3 miles from our tiny downtown. We were accidentally doing basically this type of bum training and the informal off leash style of training just by mixing up where we go play, in an effort to wear our heeler out haha.
