I can only imagine how nerve-wracking it is to not only witness the potential disaster unfolding, but to also be forced to watch as the plane you've commanded to stop keeps moving without even slowing down. Even with that plane taking off on the same runway, the taxiing pilots just keep crossing anyway. I wonder if they still have their jobs...

No, China Airlines is just the new name of Air China based in Taipei,Taiwan.China's real airline is China Eastern, China Southeast and Northen China. There the same airline just that C.E. is based on Beijing, C.S.e. on Guangzhou and N.C. on Urumqui.

On April 1, 1999, at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, a B-747 freighter landed on Runway 14R. The flightcrew members, although given taxi instructions to exit at T-10 and taxi via Kilo to the cargo area, turned left instead on Mike and taxied back onto Runway 14R. Meanwhile, the pilots of another B-747 had been cleared to take off on Runway 14R and had to aggressively rotate early, missing the other B-747 by 25-50 feet vertically.

It's important to request/re confirm clearences before crossing any runways, the china airlines plane was cleared to cross 27L but they crossed 14R, I think taxiways and runways should have the numbers properly lighted and unmissable

@pedrosura17 жыл бұрын
Yes. This runway incursion was clearly pilot error. China Air was told to exit T10, left on Kilo and cross 27L to the ramp. Instead China Air turned left on Mike and crossed 14R the runway they had just landed on. At 3:52 he is on Kilo but turns on to Mike. The crew read the clearance back correctly but probably got disoriented. They also didn't clear the runway before crossing. Conditions were such that they should have seen the 747 coming down the runway.

Air China Flight 9018, a Boeing 747 freighter, had just arrived at Chicago following a flight from New York and was cleared to turn off runway 14R via a right turn on taxiway Tango 10, a left turn on taxiway Kilo, and to cross runway 27L to the cargo ramp. The controller cleared Korean Air flight 36 (a passenger service to Seoul) for takeoff as the Air China flight was clearing the runway. The Air China flight made the right turn onto Tango 10 then made a left turn onto taxiway Mike instead of Kilo. The Air China flight entered onto runway 14R as the Korean Air Boeing 747-400 was taking off. The Korean Air flight crossed 25 to 50 feet over the top of the Air China flight.

Excellent job recreating the incident. Much better than the actual NTSB recreation. On that video you cannot make out what the other aircraft is doing in regards to turning onto Taxiway Charlie rather than Kilo as instructed. I agree with another poster though that narration rather than dramatic music would have served better in illustrating the event. Also your date is wrong. It was April 1, not April 6.

@efoxxok74786 жыл бұрын
Not going to foment on the music. You will say, asa retired Chicago controller (28.5 years there) it would appear you have the aircraft landing and departed no on the wrong runways. Air China landed on 27L which would mean that the terminal would have been on his left and not right. Korean air was cleared on 14R which would have the terminal to his left as he rolled. By the looks of the video you have Air China on 27R which is not rated for a heavy, and Korean Air on 9R on which while is long enough is hardly ever(and not in this case) used for departures due to noise abatement
@pedrosura6 жыл бұрын
Efoxx ok @ 2:18 as the aircraft is taxiing into position you can see 14 R on the runway threshhold. That is the runway Air China landed and where the incursion took place. You comments are correct but you are assuming that is 27...
@joetocayo5 жыл бұрын
WRONG ! 14R, now taxiway SS, was the active runway and used for the Air China landing and Korean Air takeoff. O'Hare has a completely different look now, five parallel east-west runways, and, RW 22L is used as a departure runway during a west flow. Heavies use all of them

The KLM pilot was almost entirely to blame for the accident. He wasn't even CLOSE to the best pilot. He was an instructor most of the time and had very little time "flying the line." In my experience instructors are not the best pilots by any stretch of the imagination.

Not 22 years old, I've been in the business for 22 years! duh. Some of those years were for DAT of Belgium. You've heard of it? Look, I don't know why you want to defend the KLM captain. He took off without a clearance on a fog shrouded runway. It was stupid and careless. As far as instructors go, my opinion is based on years of experience. I've had good and bad but they all share a close relationship with management and they do not fly enough "line" flying to be as in touch as they should.
