Stop Adding Almond Leaves Directly To Your Shrimp Tank! ‪@PoseidonsPets‬
Adding almond leaves directly to your shrimp tank can be beneficial.
Almond leaves in a shrimp tank provides a great space for biofilm to grow and the shrimp will eat the leaves as they breakdown.
Almond leaves can contain living organisms on there surfaces so you need to sterilize them before using them.
The easiest way to sterilize almond leaves is by boiling them in hot water.

Boiling them breaks down the leaves and cones and won’t last as long causing more breakdown in tank. I have been doing this years and have no issues with hydra with them. Hydra mostly comes from plants from infected tanks

Thanks for the input Joe. I feel there’s a lot of debate about this topic. To boil, or not to boil. Do you feel boiling them can affect water quality as the leaves break down?

@@JoesShrimpshack good observation. I may do a test to see. I’ll add some leaves to a tank without boiling them and see if anything unwanted pops up. The last few times I had hydra was after adding almond leaves and alder cones. It was in established tanks with no new additions besides the leaves and cones.

Highly unlikely to get hydra from the leaves unless they were collected from some body of water. Hydra lives and multiplies in water. I can see sterilizing beneficial as a precaution but it has to be for a very short time to avoid loosing all the benefits for what you use the leaf in the first place.
@PoseidonsPets
@PoseidonsPets 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. A quick blanch in boiling water is enough to sterilize.

I was wondering if rinsing them would be enough. I worry about the leaves breaking down too fast and losing a lot of the benefits. I’m anxious to try almond leaves for the first time because i have never tried it before and people in this hobby always give such different advice lol.

Boiling helps them break down and it’s a good way to ensure they are sterile and rinsed of any debris. If you want to prevent them breaking down faster only flash boil for a minute or two.

Its ok to use tap water. actually one of the fastest way to dechlorinate water is by boiling it. 15 minutes is enough. Otherwise alot of people would have ingested chlorine all their life as many cook using tap water.

Yeah! For neocaridina shrimp I’m sure it would be fine. I mostly avoid the tap water because of how hard our water is. I don’t wanna add any unnecessary carbonates to my soft water shrimp tanks

@@PoseidonsPets I just got going with my first shrimp tank. I have Bloody Mary shrimp and I’m currently cycling a Caridina shrimp tank! I remineralize distilled water for my tanks.
