I’m a fan of smart bulbs. They give you have the flexibility to choose the precise warmth and intensity you need for any specific occasion, without having to change the wiring. Handy if you’re renting, you can pop the regular bulbs back in when you move and take the good ones with you. You are right about good lighting being luxury-quite literally. As I’m sure you know, luxury is from the Latin for “light” and originally meant the comfort and convenience that came from being able to afford candles or lamps to light your home at night. That way you got to enjoy the evening hours, while the poor people who couldn’t afford them went to bed at sunset because they couldn’t see to do anything in their homes.

100% spot on as usual, Garrett! Here's an idea for people like me who are renting and can't change the wiring to add a dimmer switch. Philips makes SceneSwitch LED bulbs which can be used anywhere a normal lightbulb can be used. You can cycle through three levels of light by turning the light switch off and on. It's not as flexible as a proper dimmer switch but it is a big improvement over a regular bulb that can't be adjusted at all.

Lighting is 100% the unsung hero of the way a room looks and feels! I wish I'd understood this sooner. Also, for renters, you can get dimmers for any plug in light - basically an adapter at the plug/wall socket connection, They come with a little remote, and you can also connect a number of them up wirelessly and manage them with your smartphone.
