This is the third episode in the series of Barking. In this episode I will show you the beginning exercises on how to teach your dog not to bark on a walk. Stay tuned and Subscribe to see other exercises that are very useful for reactive dogs and dogs that are hyperactive.
All these exercises benefit ANY dog, not just fearful, reactive or aroused dogs. These same exercises are GREAT for dogs with little impulse control, the kind of dog that wants to pull towards everything on a walk.
-----------------------
When a dog becomes aroused or reactive, it is due to chemicals being released by the brain, effecting the dogs behavior. Not only does a dogs behavior change because of these chemicals and stress hormones, but their heart beat, respiration, and blood flow will change too. Jerking a dogs neck will not reduce these chemicals, instead it will INCREASE them.
Barking can be reinforcing, so the more a dog is allowed to bark the more likely they will continue barking in the future. When you and your dog are surprised on a walk and your dog starts to bark, simply say "Let's Go" and move briskly in the opposite direction. You can use this cue whenever you change direction unexpectedly or need to move from an area that is causing your dog to be over their threshold.
Here are some tips:
1-when on a walk cross the street to set your dog up for success
2-If you have a very fearful or reactive dog, simply change the direction of your walk when you see something your dog wont be able to handle at this point in their training
3-Never feed the dog for looking at your treats
4-Use real meat or cheese for these exercises, the higher value the reinforcement the faster your dog will learn. If you use low level treats, your dog might not make any progress
5-You can use calming signals to help calm your dog on a walk. Yawning or sighing loudly when you see the distraction. You can also walk in an arc around the distraction rather than head on which is very unnatural for a dog to do.
6-If you are getting frustrated, better turn and go home immediately than take it out on the dog.

A couple of these comments completely overlook the point of clicker training. I adopted a poorly behaved high-energy 9month old lab cross. Two months later and lots of reruns of kikopup vids, she's like a new animal. I don't know the dog trainer in these videos - I'm just a random viewer from Toronto with a really good dog now! One thing: You need to have a food motivated dog for great success with this. My other dog isn't so food motivated but she now likes the clicker sound and knows it means she is good. And over time, you slowly stop using the clicker/treat. I still click with my mouth when they need reinforcement. And yeah, I always have kibble or treats in my pockets. I used to wear nice clothes, lol.

Great advice! ! ! I will also add, a lot of dogs in North America are over weight, which causes them to have little interest in training with food (they already are eating too much) putting the dog on a diet increases their interest in working for food, AND exercising more

THANK YOU KIKOPUP!!!! I discovered you while attending Bergin University of Canine Studies, where I got my AS in Assistance Dog Education. You got me through some tough times and problem behaviors before I learned about Kohlberg's stages of development, BAT training, etc... I just wanted to give you props for putting those concepts into a language and video that common dog owners can understand. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

This will defiantly help with my dog. He is people reactive, dog reactive, car reactive, bike reactive, and a but tun of energy. Its hard walking him since there is always people, dogs, cars, and bikes so I make a real fool of myself trying to get a 75 lb dog who completely ignores me to listen. I've tried the turning and walking away but he simply turns around and will pull me towards what he wants. I'll have to get some hot dogs and see if they are high value enough for him to ignore people, dogs, cars, and bikes.

Great stuff, I love how you work with all kinds of dogs, it reminds others how this positive training is rather simple and works, but needs to be consistent.I also found just sitting in a place being boring that is reactive, just not overly triggering, then just trying to train after a while the dog will stop or slow down the reactivity and eventually you can treat and train. It takes a lot of dedication and the outing has to be for just that training and done regularly until the pup gets what you want. I found this to work with new things too for both dogs and kids. The trick is to be physically, mentally and spiritually prepared for it before you go and to know how much you and your dog can handle in one shot each time. Keep sharing I have learned so much from these videos. Blessings..

Thank you, this barking on a leash video is EXACTLY what I have been looking for. I have been trying to stop this barking at other dogs on a leash for 4 months since I got the dog, a 2 1/2 year old female german shepard. She didn't bark at other dogs when I got her so I somehow created the situation. Thank you again! oh yes, ITS STARTING TO WORK!!!

I'll have to try all this. I've tried giving him treats while he's looking at people but he just doesn't understand and will eat the treat but continue to bark. I feel bad for him because I know he's just scared of people but it's so embarrassing. It's gotten to the point that I have anxiety whenever I have to take him out for a walk. Ugh!

+Liz Liz oh I understand you all too well. I got my dog from animal rescue and he's incredibly reactive as well. Some walks are just torture and I really started to get nervous when I knew he might need to go out soon. Especially those sudden yanks on the leash in some random direction really got to me because they sometimes really, really hurt. It's also embarassing when people are friendly and go by and then my dog freaks out. Not much you can say then. However, after 6 months of no improvement, he suddenly got it. I mean he still barks and it's still a strain sometimes but it did get better. Much better. My biggest problem though is that my dog freezes upon seeing another dog and then he won't budge, until of course he decides to lunge and bark. Now I try to avoid those situations before they happen. Or I use a recall which works at times. What also helped is training and get playing right after the stimuli passes to get my pup to calm down faster. Sometimes he even anticipates the reward enough to contemplate if he really must react or if he'd rather play. I know it's not easy to say the least and I am not trying to downplay your despair. I totally get what you are going through and how painful and draining it can be.

Thanks for breaking this down into easy to do steps I'll practice this in spring. We're doing 1 & 2 constantly. It's really difficult to train a dog in the suburbs where few people walk their dogs (especially in the cold months). I thought socializing a dog would be so easy with daily walks, but so many people did 1 & 2 that my dog didn't get enough interactions.

"If you're getting frustrated with your dog better to just go home." I totally agree...when I was training my dog in the beginning he was totally out of control and looking back I wish I would have simply turned back and went home. Instead I'd push through but with immense frustration that I know he could sense and it only slowed us down in the long run.

WOW! WOW! this is a REALLY EXCELLENT vid, i love the way you have shown it, I love that you have put the info on about the chemical reaction within the dogs body. Education helps people to understand better what is going on, so that they then can have the knowledge how to help their dog. This provides it all...fantastic is defo one to share:))) i love the cue 'Lets go', i use it often for changes in direction and to get the dogs attention back on you:))

Actually, turning around will help your dog succeed in training. When you walk in the other direction, you're communicating with them that you want them to focus on something else. it is like telling them to change the subject and move on. hope this helps!

Remember also to work with your dog with a Let's Go, LOTS on walks, (everyday) so your dog doesn't stop and wait to see what "trigger" he is leaving before deciding to leave. If this has been well trained he will immediately follow you when you say Let's Go, without looking for the "trigger".

Goal is to be able to pass another dog on the street. 2) When using Firefox, download the Firefox plug-in (add-on) called Download Helper. Available for either Mac or Windows. I have a phobia of being near other dogs, in case a 'row' starts between them and I get pulled down. My dog has only started to react recently and I feel it is my fault. I never let her off the lead unless in a confined area - I am less worried then. Even when I am brave enough to say hello to a friend walking their dog, and mine has met it before, my heart starts pounding. I need help for this but not sure where to go and everything is so expensive. However, I walk her daily - she is not aggressive but I think I am making her fearful. Thank you for this video, I just found it and will go back again to study it and try these techniques.

@NativeHiro That tells you your dog is so stressed to be out of the house that his body has cut off the blood circulation to his stomach causing him to not be hungry. You need to habituate him to being out of the house, take him places, perhaps feed him his meals by hand when out and about? Make sure being out side is the 'norm' not a rarity.

Thank you for posting this VERY helpful video! Clicker training has helped Jake so much with his barking at other dogs, as well as some people. I can judge by Jake's body language when he is becoming stressed, and when to start clicking and treating him, the c/t gets him focused back on me. To help Jake succeed, I cross the street, or do whatever I can to keep a comfortable distance away from the other dog. A GREAT book to read on aggressive dogs is "Click to Calm" by Emma Parsons.
