My mom was just telling me about a lawsuit where this woman went to a spa where they had those fish that eat the dead skin off your feet… she had gotten that done before and it went fine, then the owner encouraged her to try a facial with that, and again it went fine. And THEN the owner encouraged her to do her whole body, claiming it was totally safe. The owner had the client get totally naked and climb into the tank, when the client said she felt uncomfortable and felt like something was wrong, the owner pushed her to stay inside for several minutes. She got an infection and her cl!t was destroyed. I’m 🤢 over the whole thing. The client did win the lawsuit and the owner was arrested because it’s very much illegal to do that where she owns and runs her spa.

I gave myself an acrylic allergy, not from gel nails, but from press-on nail glue. I was doing DIY press-one regularly for years before I had my first allergic reaction. I woke up randomly at 1 AM with my entire body swollen and itchy and barely able to open my eyes because they were almost swollen shut. Went to the ER and nobody could figure out what was wrong with me. Passed a standard allergy test with no reactions to anything so had to wait several months for a specialized skin allergy test appointment. During this time I kept doing press on nails because I had no idea that was causing the reaction due to 1) the reaction was delayed, so it’s not like I would do my nails and then immediately swell up, it would happen 3-7 days after nail application so I didn’t realize there was any correlation and 2) the reaction wasn’t localized to my nails or my hands, it was my whole body, so I thought it was maybe my laundry detergent or body wash or something else, and 3) because it made me allergic to acrylics in all kinds of other products, even if I didn’t do my nails for a couple weeks I would still have reactions so that was even further reason why I had no idea what was causing it, it seemed completely random whenever I had a reaction. So I was unknowingly making my allergy even worse because I had no clue that is what was causing it due to the delayed full-body reaction. It was nine months between my first reaction and my skin allergy test results, and none of the medical professionals who I saw during that time had any idea what was wrong with me, nobody ever made the connection between my nails and this full-body allergic reaction.

I was lucky enough for my first tattoo with color to be SMALL (like, 3x3 inches is a generous estimate). I was also SUPER lucky for the doc I saw when I first started fearing what I THOUGHT was infection to have been knowledgeable in tattoos: I “just” have a metal allergy. If your ears are sensitive to any earrings at ALL, you have metal allergies, and you MUST be super careful before getting any tattoos with color. I’ll be having a (fortunately mild) reaction to the purple in my ankle tattoo for the rest of my life. Two or three years on, it gets a tiny bit swollen and itchy whenever I go for a long run. Even if you haven’t had any allergies before, if you’re planning on getting a tattoo with color, MAKE SURE you do a little patch test first (like with tiny dots in a hidden area). Paying the artist a little extra for their time for an allergy test is WAYYYYYY Better and cheaper than dealing with basically being implanted with metals you’re allergic to for the rest of your life* *btw, part of my undergrad degree was in chemistry, the rest was in physics. Even if the colors are “naturally derived”, the colors STILL COME FROM METALS!!! Even flowers and fruits get their colors from chemical complexes using transition metals. You might be able to eat the fruit or flower with no problem, but tattoo ink is tiny dots permanently implanted in your skin for your immune system to continually carry on to the next layer!!! If you’ve ever had ANY itching with earrings, you probably can NOT safely get a full color tattoo. It REALLY sucks, but it’s better than dealing with a lifelong allergic reaction to something you can’t really remove.
@imlookingforthetoweroflear78717 ай бұрын
Thanks for the knowledge. Would later tattoo removal break up the metal and help flush it out?
@ace.l.w7 ай бұрын
@@imlookingforthetoweroflear7871 it would definitely depend on the pigment. By breaking up the little implanted “drops”, it will be more capable of exiting your system for sure, but the biocompatibility of the pigment is going to be a huge factor, and either way it will take a LOT of time and many sessions of laser removal. If you can figure out exactly what the pigment you’re reacting to is in advance, then an allergist MIGHT be able to suggest some things to help the process along (like medications that would eagerly bind to the metal, allowing your bloodstream to bring it to the kidneys), but that’s my guess from my chemistry background, not as an allergist.

The risk occurs with all acrylics, not just gel nails. Even with ordinary nail polish the risk occurs. It's An occupational hazard for nail techs or anyone working with resin. It's why when you see a nail tech they are very careful about not getting any on your skin and ensuring it is fully cured before they proceed. It's also why they are careful about getting it on their skin. I have a sensitivity due to my previous job as an ink formulating chemist. We worked with acrylates, but at the start they are just a clear, runny liquid. If someone has poor glove hygiene it ends up on all the door handles.

Over a period of time the product (if not cured correctly) can cause an allergy to develop. The way this happens is by the chemical bonds in the acrylic mimicking the amino acids in your body and that sends signals to your immune system to stop producing the correct acids in your body. It's a whole complicated thing and I'm not a doctor but I watched a doctor talk about it in depth and it's definitely real. Stay safe (like please wear a mask if you can) and make sure you're curing that product all the way bc if I'm understanding it right, it's because the product isn't cured all the way and that's what makes it happen.

Improper use of gel nail products can cause you to develop an allergy
@KateyMoseley7 ай бұрын
That's not how acrylate sensitivity works. Acrylate sensitivity is an acquired condition from repeated exposure to things containing those chemicals. It is a common occupation hazard for nail techs or anyone who works with resin. If a nail tech repeatedly gets any product on their skin, they increase the risk of acquiring the sensitivity. I used to be an ink formulation chemist. I am no longer an ink formulation chemist because I acquired an acrylate sensitivity. As a raw material, it is a clear runny liquid. If someone in a lab doesn't have good glove hygiene, they spread it around a workplace... door handles in communal spaces. I'm sensitive to skincare products I used to be absolutely fine with and can tell if I have put an acrylate containing cream on my body because it causes contact dermatitis. She was very likely not sensitive, but by doing the nails herself she was probably getting the gel on her skin. When a nail tech does your nails they are very careful to not get any on your actual skin to reduce the risk of acquiring a sensitivity to acrylates.
@KateyMoseley7 ай бұрын
@professionalbummer3274 I'm curious where you found this explanation? Because acrylates/acrylics look nothing like an amino acid because they are missing the amino group. I've had a search through journals and really can't find anything.

Yes i am back, I work as a dental assistant for many many years. 1. The UV light on the eyes, in dentistry we use a shield to protect the patients eyes and our eyes when we use it to cure dental fillings, yes it will be hot because it's like a light bulb, UV light is radiation bro, when it is applied close to an area and produces heat, and then used repeatedly especially over a long period of weeks, months years, it can cause damage to cells, can alter the way things grow back, can do damage to nerves, it's the same technology as x-rays dude. This is also why people should wear gloves when getting their nails done, so repeated exposures to hands don't continually age the skin and do damage. 2. Veneers, it involves more. When you come to a dental clinic, not only is oral health assessed, anatomy and lifestyle habits are taken into consideration to see if you are a good candidate. To get good seamless veneers we push back the gums with a cord, certain chemicals are applied to stop excessive bleeding, these are procedures a DR should do, mishandling can lead to infection. Also your anatomy is important because if you are a grinder, or if you bite a certain way things have to be planned so no damage is done to the opposite teeth. Your lifestyle habits are assessed to give you realistic idea of how long they last or if they are suitable, because teeth are like car tires, the way you use them will determine how long they last, if you go over bumps excessively, like to tokyo drift etc you got 2 years tops lol

Me watching this while doing my nails with gel polish 😭😭😭 I’ve been doing my own nails with gel for 2-3 years and never going back to a salon not only is it cheaper for me but I’m soo much more gentle than the girls in the salon. But acrylic allergy is scary which is why you have to be SUPER CAREFUL NOT TO GET UNCURED GEL ON YOUR SKIN!! I can’t stress that enough. I’ve always loved painting my nails (reg polish) so I have a steady hand from practice and I would be so scared if I had super shaky hands. I do my nails every month or so also as a way to limit how often I come in contact with gel polish. But this why you need to watch informational videos from professionals who can provide correct information.

@the clip at 5:49 I am so surprised to know allergies to nail products are now becoming common. I remember when my allergies began, I felt awful and like nobody had the same issue. I started applying fake nails with the worse quality (usually old) Kiss glue when I was 12 years old. I didn't know any better so I would just reapply new nails twice a week and layer glue on top of each other. I also saw the videos online with the nails being pushed into the fake nail styling hands. I thought they were real (Because I was a dumb kid) and did that to myself. My cuticles never grew back how they should after this. I hate those videos, they never made it obvious then that it was a FAKE hand. I thought as a little girl you genuinely dig a cuticle pusher into your skin and push the nail in. This constant glue exposure for 4 years led to me developing an intense allergy to most nail products except plastic based press ons and adhesive tabs. This glue exposure and improper nail application also led to me developing permanent eczema on various parts of my body, eczema that's never gone away and I still suffer with it to this day. My nails can never grow like how they did, either. My nail issue began a little before the events of COVID, but worsened around COVID. The false nails side of Tiktok and other medias can be awful. I hope no child or person has to go through the shit I experienced (Mainly the shoving the false nail inside the cuticles and getting eczema thing). ----------------------------------------- (EDIT PART) I also forgot to add. When I try to apply nail glue now, my skin will swell around the false nails, inflame, and trigger my eczema. It also causes my skin to separate in layers around the false nails. It looks like a medieval torture and feels awful. I've never seen it get so bad to the point of causing the skin to go into a protective response and SEPERATING. Every time this happens, I have to go to my dermatologist and get antibiotic ointments and lotions. If I didn't do this, the skin would become infected and fill with yellow pus. --------------------------------------------- Media knocks the idea into most girls' heads that they are not beautiful without false nails or painted nails. It's very sad and very real. I remember even contacting some of the companies I bought glue from once I got older to suggest for them to give a warning on their nail products, but I was to blame and ended up almost getting into legal trouble for harassment. I wish people could go back to painting their nails and that being it, not temporary results with long-term damage.

@@thatbasicwitch7468 you said in your comment “when I try to apply nail glue now” which makes it sound like you are still using it “now” so sorry for misunderstanding I guess? Adhesive tabs also have acrylates in them so maybe that’s why your eczema isn’t going away.

@sprig.sprout7 ай бұрын
@@thatbasicwitch7468 there is a chance that the allergy could worsen with every exposure, it might not.. but it also might. You do you though. Also want to throw out there that there may be acrylates you aren’t allergic to, there’s a brand called Light Elegance that uses a polymer with larger molecules so they don’t leach into your skin like HEMA and other acrylates with smaller molecules can. Like you said, not worth risking long term effects for temporary results.

Nails are pretty basic thing, everything has risks, even buying new makeup, but the risk of developing some horrible infection or, developing an allergy, getting really ill is really slim, people have been doing their nails at home for centuries, there's even one time use acrylic or Gel sets/kits in the goddam pharmacy. This is a non-issue. There's always the exception, but we don't base our decisions and risk assessment based on the 0.5% of the possibility or exception. It's not really something to consider when taking a decision. Driving is roughly 100x more dangerous and FATAL, but u don't stop driving or taking an Uber because of that, we do t even think about it most of the time when we get behind the wheel or as a passenger. So this ain't something to worry abt tbh.

Eh the problem is that people don't realize the damage over time. I see plenty of people who develop sensitivity to nail products and sometimes straight up allergies without realizing bc they think they just have "rough nails". So they don't get infections or anything catastrophic but they DO have damage from these diy
@justiceconcepcion36947 ай бұрын
While everything has risks, we shouldn’t glamorize something that could be harmful. Like filing your teeth etc. if you wanna use an example like that, someone could easily say well drunk driving is a risk, so are you gonna do it? Just bc there’s plenty of things that are risky in this world. It’s more like yeah you can do it but do it at your own risk and research before you just go doing anything you see on TikTok.
@mikaelawilliams57797 ай бұрын
Actually Gel nails have a huge risk. When done improperly you risk exposing your skin to those chemicals on the skin which makes it more likely to develop and allergy. Leave nails to the nails tech. They know how to properly clean the cuticle, avoide flooding the nail bed, and proper;y disposing of product. Plus with nails techs you get products from a repital source that will less likely to be expired.

So I am a licensed cosmetologist, gel polish is not supposed to burn but it will in fact burn if you get it on your skin! One of the reasons it burns on skin is because the molecules contract when put under the uv light, on skin this can cause a weird feeling but doesn’t necessarily mean you are allergic! Also second you said cluster lashes last 4-8 weeks. Absolutely NOT!!! You’re lucky if you get professional lash extensions to last 4 weeks. Lash clusters are meant to last 4-10 days tops, depending on how you apply them and what glue is used. Just wanted to make a point to tell you that. But as stated be careful when doing diy beauty treatments. I’m surprised you didn’t mention the ppl doing diy filler or diy piercings lol 😂

Even if a doctor agrees with her account, still be skeptical. There are doctors on SM that constantly get called out for posting false or sensationalized info. Always remember that cases like this are far from the norm, and that most folks use these products for years without any problems. We also don't know how safe and careful her application technique was, where she purchased her products, frequency of application, etc. Always err on the side of skepticism unless you can find a good number of peer reviewed reports from reputable sources to back up these claims.

I have basically always done my own bleaching my own dying my own waxing my own haircut, my own gel nails, my own dip nails all of it and I thought everybody else did too. I thought for the most part everybody was pretty much doing it themselves. I did not come to understand how much people relied on the salon and how often they were going to the salon and how much money they were spending at the salons until quarantine hit and there were people vocally complaining online about how they had gone to the salon every 3 to 4 weeks since they were like 16 to get their hair done and their nails done okay. I have never had the money to do that and I just assumed that everybody was pretty much as broke as I was and that for the most part unless it was a special occasion, whatever they were doing they were doing on their own The fact that people were demanding that salon personnel hair stylist nail text put their life at risk because they couldn't deal with not having these maintenance options for their beauty boggled. My mind
@samiyahparen84077 ай бұрын
You could not have possibly thought that EVERYBODY did their own hair and gel or dip nails. That's ridiculous. Dip wasn't even a thing a decade or so ago so how would everybody just be doing it themselves. Many women only go to the salon for special occasions and otherwise don't wear polish at all and many go regularly as a form of self care. Most people now that bleaching your own hair is dangerous especially when you have zero knowledge of the chemicals you are mixing. So how would they be in the majority?

I got my nails done and i tried plastic tips for the first time, the curing was burninnngggg my natural nails. I always thought it was because my nails are very thin, is it actually a bad sign to prone to allergy or amateur nail tech?
