Two years ago, I was paying .20/round of 9mm. My local gunshop is now unable to get any to sell. I've seen ammo as high as $1/round, now it's down to .60/round, so prices are coming down, but not fast enough. I belong to an outdoor range and usually go twice a month. My wife and I shoot 100-200 rounds each time we go. Not at .60 a pop. I'm not seeing an overcrowding there or at the indoor range we sometimes shoot. What are people doing with all these bullets, eating them?
@koryhegwood57503 жыл бұрын
This approach only makes sense if we are allowed to buy ammo at all by the time supply catches up. Many people panic buying are more worried about possible future restrictions than they are about lagging supply.

Indeed. Last box of ammo I bought was in October of 2020, a box of Winchester .303 British (goddamn $2/round) for the Enfield I saw for $200 (and in excellent condition, very accurate, too). After that, I decided to reload for .303 Brit, and lucked out in getting a box of 1,000 match grade large rifle primers, a pound of 760 ball, and some Sierra 180gn soft points. Before that, I think my last ammo purchase was around November 2019, a 1,100 round box of Federal CPHP .22LR (which I still have about 600 rounds about 1.5 years later). I can't even remember the last time I bought 5.56x45... Must've been around July of 2019, back when Federal 5.56 was $0.27/round. Yeah, less than 30 cents a round, guys. Stop paying these stupid prices for ammo! If you stop buying from price-gougers, they will be forced to lower their price if they ever want to move their inventory, but we all gotta do our part. If you keep buying at ridiculous prices, the price will never go down!

@oaksparoakspar31443 жыл бұрын
5.56 weighs about 1.94lbs per 100 rounds. 50,000 rounds is just 500 times 1.94lbs. That is 970lbs - not 12 tons. Not 1 ton. Less than 50% of a single ton. Now, considering that you are talking 50 cases at 1,000 rounds per case (42 if you are loose packing 50cal cans, 84 in 30cal cans at 1200 and 600 rounds respectively) - you are not going to carry that around with you unless you are rocking a very heavy duty tactical shopping cart. Of course, since that is about 30 hours of continual firing at any rate you are likely to sustain your firearm at (and, honestly, even that rate would ruin most with heat build up over time) - you probably won't need to carry that much. That said, 30 hours of continual firing is 15 minutes at the range continually firing every week for just over 4 years - so 50K is not a ridiculous amount for a regular shooter. More than I need, but I'm not that heavy of a shooter.

I burned down more .22LR in 2020 than I have in the last decade, combined. The weapon manipulation reps are the same, the mechanics are the same, but at a fraction of the cost. The longer the demand stays high, the greater the incentive for producers to expand their production. Just having a producer max profits now without adding costs later isn't the best outcome for us. The best outcome for us is industry expansion. That means the demand needs to be high, stay high, and maintain that high. That doesn't mean you pay scalper prices today. It does mean, however, anywhere you see it at a reasonable price for you, clear the shelf until you are set on ammo FOR LIFE. That isn't hording - factor how much you shoot with how long you will live - but get to the point where the only time you will ever need to buy ammo is if you add a new caliber to your collection. THAT is how you cease to be a part of the problem - by removing your purchasing from any cycle, up or down, by having all the ammo already. Obviously, you are not like to be able to do that in a day - even if prices were normal - so you will be a regular, steady purchaser until then. Again, we are best served by the industry expanding capacity and that is done off of the DURATION of the demand, not the momentary depth of demand. That said, it isn't about June. Don't buy over priced ammo in any month - full stop.

I agree completely. I have been saying this for a long time and a lot of people refuse to listen to common sense. There are even experienced gun people that are making regular "gun videos" in which they video themselves going to the store several times a week, complaining about the price of ammo and then buying as much as they can. These people get KZbin money, Patreon money and some are even sponsored by different companies. They aren't actually paying for their overpriced ammo...... their loyal followers that are drooling over their computer screens at the ammo this person has just got are the very people paying for it. If everyone took one month off from buying ammo and then didn't try to "catch up" for what they didn't buy, we would be so much better off. Some people can't grasp the concept of supply and demand. There is no excuse for experienced gun people to buy overpriced ammo and then video it regularly on YT or anywhere else and preach to their viewers about how much ammo is overpriced. No one can tell another person how much ammo they need (that's a big argument from these "people") but there is no average person that "needs" a million rounds of every caliber they own. I agree with you completely and have been saying it for a while but the push back is insane. Of course, it's easier to buy overpriced ammo when someone else is paying for it. Businesses do not want stock sitting on their shelves or in their warehouses, if we just stuck together things would get a lot better a lot faster.

Moral of the story is if you have a closet full of ammo and half your garage full of ammo and you're still buying ammo and you're complaining about an ammo shortage...... you are the problem. See normies like me who aren't retired and sit around all day on the computer ordering up every last box of ammo you come across for calling Cabela's and Academy every morning before they open to ask if they have a shipment and then going to said store and raking is much in your basket as you can or that they will let you which I have witnessed first-hand. These fudds I've been waiting outside of Cabela's four months every morning just to see if they have a shipment of ammo in. And if they do they usually buy it off the pallet before it even hits the Shelf. Like I said I've witnessed this and this is cooperated by multiple Cabela's employees and Academy employees. So if you're one of those old men that are doing this and you're reading this when s*** hits the fan you're not going to be sitting on the roof of your house in a sniper's nest taking out bad guys from 2 miles away with your forty thousand rounds of 556....... cut it out

I live in the Charleston South Carolina area. I've had no issues getting ammo. We have Precision one ammo company and I can get it directly from them. PSA and Sportsman warehouse has it an $22 for 50 rounds of 9mm. I am new this year after a few decades of not owning, but I did get my CWP and own a Ruger security 9 compact and a PSA AR15 freedom that's got a Holosun HS403B red dot, sure fire light and Magpul addons.. I had no trouble finding 5.56 or.223. I do want to take classes, but not sure where around here to go

I haven't bought ammo since Nov '19. I found it on sale in the couple calibers that I more frequently use. I've been telling folks this for a year.

I wish I was part of the problem and had ammo at all. I still need enough to fill my plate carrier

The biggest problem is buying on line at the outrageous prices the scalpers charge, Stop buying from them and ammo stays on the shelf longer. Prices will eventually go down when the supply lines catch up with the demand, and the raw materials producers scale up. When that happens buy two boxes at a time one to stash and one to shoot until you have enough to get buy in lean times.

Great point. We want those who think like us... Our allies to have the ammo they need. Us buying more than we need to train prevents our allies from training and being prepared.

“A day late and a dollar short”! By now I fear the bean counters have more than enough data to justify their price gouging and determine the next plateau of ammo prices. These people are smart and prepared at all times to test the market for every half cent they can increase profits from. And consumers in America are the worst kind of blind sheep! We are far too easily manipulated in this country. The corporate overlords developed and established an entire science for marketing that includes fear based strategies to the old ‘new and improved’ strategies all the way up to peer pressure tactics etc. etc. They have masterfully studied and perfected these strategies in order to manipulate us with the sole intent of testing our willingness to pay more! Especially if/when they are successful at convincing us that the supply is short and the future uncertain.

I do not buy ammo during shortages. I have a decent supply and when these scares happen it forces the prices up. I do not want to feed the industry to stabilize at higher prices.

601 sportcenter have told me no matter what the bullet grab more gun sales there is a 12% cost increase the ammo prices are never gonna go down the price gauges will become the standard

I 100% agree, but it will be very tough to herd so many cats. Maybe some good advice is to tell how much ammo a person should have in case of SHTF & then don’t buy any more.

Like Rudyard Kipling said, "You can never have too many books, too much ammunition, or too much red wine." Of course, I know what James is saying, so I've accumulated over many years.

If you swapped books with women and red wine with bourbon id be with you.

This is why I don't think higher prices is the worst thing. In theory, it should keep people from hoarding or trying to buy and resell ammo, although it hasn't seemed to stop this. The only thing I've bought in 2020-2021 is 7.62x39 because I had very little more than what I'd train with, but I'm buying a box here and there.

I haven't bought in months. I bought some every week in 2020 (at nice prices), but wont pay the 2021 prices.

1:43. to 1:57. Oh yeah..like those some of those "smaller youtube channels" out there that goes around filming themselves buying "ammo score", updating the ammo crisis in their area or whatever. They aren't helping. They are prolonging their viewers or viewers to stay in panic mode and keep buying ammo.
@CyclingAddiction3 жыл бұрын
I stopped buying months ago. I am training with 22LR and dry fire training with a SIRT and Mantis Blackbeard system. But I know most will have to lay off buying for a few months for this to return.

I bought some practice ammo about 9 months ago. Nothing since, cant afford the stuf at these prices. Dont buy now, let it stock up and fill the shelves and you'll see better prices in 2-3 months.

I haven't bought ammo in over a year. I'm not paying 1$ a round for 9mm or 1.25 for crappy 5.56.

Working at a gun shop/indoor range, I see this litteraly on a daily basis. I couldn't agree more with James, especially when he mentioned the "new" ammo brands. Where I am at we have noticed the "panic" surge is slowing down so hopefully this continues and prices can go back to normal...

Hey James, me and the guys I know watched this, and we've all agreed to take June off from buying ammo. We all shoot pretty regularly, none of us are "hoarding" , but we've all got enough for SHTF and to practice for now. We'll each urge others we know to do the same. Curious to see if it has an affect.👍

Like you said- the issue is people that didn’t have enough ammo at the start of this. I’ve purchased some in the midst of rona, and it’s because i entered it with some ammo, but not enough to call a stash- I’ve learned lol

I’ve only bought defensive ammunition in the past year. I figured if I’m gonna pay outrageous prices I might as well get as quality of ammo as I can get. The prices are not that insane compared to regular ball.

I'm in Cali and a lot of ammo that i don't have and always only had a few boxes of 22 lr or rifle or shotgun rounds so i said hmm why be that guy so about every 2 weeks i bought the 5 boxes of 22lr or shotgun shells or i buy a few boxes of 9mm and 357 to have on hand. What your saying is the same logic of stop buying guns when you can only shoot one at a time if you don't hunt you don't need to buy a hunting rifle and if you don't hunt bird stop buying all the shotguns just because you want it.

I was in my local shop to buy some sling mounts and a few other odds and ends when two guys walk in. They went straight to the ammo shelves and knew exactly what they wanted. Then the stood there waiting patiently. I told them to go ahead I am still shopping, they shook their heads and stood there. The guy behind the counter sighed, looked at his watch and motioned them up to the register. They paid and left. I asked what that was all about and he said those same two come in every day to buy the maximum allowed by the store and can’t buy more for 24 hours. They still had 10 minutes to go until the time was up. He said that they would be back tomorrow like clockwork. And that’s what they do. They run from store to store and buy all they can. God only knows why or how long they will continue. Like they think it’s the next gold rush or something. Very odd
@Adubz8193 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I stopped buying about a month ago after getting what I need for range time and some defensive rounds. I won’t buy anymore until it’s back at reasonable pricing and availability.

I haven’t bought more than 2 boxes of 5.56 since last March, over a year ago I last bought 9mm. Makes me sick to pay these kind of prices. Just can’t afford to shoot right now. I’ve put off classes, training, and a match this year because of supply. Hope it comes down sooner rather than later, got about 200 rounds stashed away right now.
