One consideration I didn't hear, or may have missed, is physical size. My CPU cooler does not leave a lot of room for fancy RAM with all the heat spreaders that look like trees with branches sticking out, or a samurai helmet. I don’t know how people manage to fit that stuff. For my current system, I went with 32GB Corsair Vengeance LP 3200 CL16 because I knew it would fit. Also knew it would run without issues because my old system also used a similar Corsair LP product and never had any RAM stability issues.

Thank you for making this video. It's been a while since I've seen anyone make a good RAM roundup. Great points regarding considerations for a gaming PC. One thing I do want to point out regarding rigs for Professional content creation. If you're building a PC for these reasons, then stability should the 2nd highest consideration behind capacity on what settings you should use for memory. It doesn't help if you gain a few seconds on your rendering times if the PC is crashing regularly. Even if you game on the same PC, the loss of a few fps is worth getting reliable performance when doing paid (or practicing to get paid) work.

For intel 3200mhz cl16, may seem that it has same first word latency than 3600mhz cl18, but the subtimings are slightly faster and are often same price or less than the 3600mhz cl18. For amd 3600mhz cl18, amd cpus usually prefer 3600mhz or so. 3600mhz cl16 is also on the table, i can find these kits for $20 more than their 3600mhz cl18. You can also consider samsung bdie for amd if you overclock, but they are quite more $ and quite more hard to find. Also there are ADATA, XPG, and TEAMGROUP bundles of RAM and SSD which contain higher end SSDS and saves a buck.
@PCBuilderChannel2 жыл бұрын
Some things prefer lower latency, some faster frequency. On balance 3600 CL18 is roughly equivalent to 3200 CL16 and that's why I recommend to skip it in favor of 3600 CL16 if you want to jump up a tier of performance.
@adama77522 жыл бұрын
Internally there is a timing spec of how long it takes in nanoseconds to get data to the output pins (CAS latency). So, if you are running at a faster clock, you'll wait more cycles before that timing is met. At the extremely you could have CL1, but you'd have to run slow like 20MHz. The only reason to run at a faster clock is the subsequent data burst (next bit in the burst) has a much faster timing. Not than you can control how a game reads it's memory. But sequential reads are faster than random

Great video in general, no complaints. Might make special mention of the 3600 cl17 stuff in future which is almost certainly CJR, and although with a ryzen build which doesn't run odd Cas latencies you'd end up at 18-19-19-39 which is still better than the 3600 18-20-20 or 18-22-22 kits. The main reason 3200 14-14-14 is more expensive is the fact that it is bdie and as such attracts the bdie tax and is less common as well and the real value lies in manual tuning for it and like you mentioned the compatibility as even the older ryzen stuff will run it no problem.

@PCBuilderChannel2 жыл бұрын
If it is a prebuilt, you don't have a lot of choice if they use DDR5. Nothing wrong with it, just that the memory controller on 12th gen intel can't fully take advantage of DDR5 (similar thing happened when DDR4 first rolled out). Hopefully Ryzen 7000 and 13th gen Intel continue to improve! But similar gaming performance. Hope that helps!

I would actually go for 2x16gb 3600mhz, cl16. Price wise it's like less than double usually compared to 2x8 and you future proof yourself so much more. I agree that most of the time you won't need more than 16gb ram, but when you have discord, steam, windows, and all kinds of other stuff running it starts to take a toll. Especially when you play city builder games which are often overlooked in comparisons. Think of: cities skylines, frostpunk, anno 1800. Then 32 will make a difference over 16gb. Plus it's easier to fork out say 50 bucks for double the ram rather than finding a matching kit 1 year down the line. In my case for instance the RAM i had was discontinued because of a takeover.

Thanks Dude. I've had 4 sticks of CL15 2666mhz running in 8 + 4 / 8 + 4 (24GB) for a couple of years, but suddenly it's stopped working (1000's of errors and frequent crashes) in DOCP, and can only run up to 1200mhz or so with DOCP off.

8:11 I'm not sure about this, but I don't think it's the memory controller's fault Ryzen runs at a slower ram to maintain 1:1, if I remember, I think it's due to the infinity fabric instead not being able to clock higher, the memory controller should be able to reach higher frequencies if you're willing to sacrifice running 1:1. For newer 8gbit crucial ballistix kits, I've heard that they use the same chips beyond 3000+, so if you just get the cheapest new ballistix 2x8gb 3000, you can manually tune to to perform similarly to the 3600 c16 kit. Well it's a shame that they discontinued the ballistix line though. But it's a good deal if you can get it. 3200 14-14-14 kits are guaranteed to use Samsung b die, its basically the better ddr4 IC, you can manually overclock it to higher speeds. Although yeah I have to agree it cost a hefty premium, and if you don't want to manually overclock and tune it, it's probably not worth it 16:14, I think it could be debatable depending on what you want to do with it, on most cases 4x8gb DR configuration is worse compared to 2x16gb DR cause of the motherboard's memory topology.

Was on the fence with DDR5, I went with it and was disappointed at first, after many (5) bios updates all to improve ram speed (z690 hero) I’m getting much higher scores in my benchmarks, about 18 percent higher compared to when I first used it. I was actually a few fps lower than my ddr4 comparison now im a few fps higher. Manufacturers are maturing for ddr5, and quickly

Very, well explained video! I just don't fully understand the whole running "one to one" or "synchronically" bit at 7:53. Weirdly enough i also don't find anything about that on google. I have an Ryzen 5 3600XT and there it states the max type of DDR4 as 3200, so does that mean, that the memory controller runs at 3200 and therefore i should run 3200 Speed Memory? I guess it's not that important than since i don't find much about it.

Hi Jason, When it comes to a AMD Ryzen 7 5800 CPU and DDR 4 ram, is it best to increase your PC ram to 32GB using only two DDR DIMMS (i.e. 2×16GB.) or is it best to fill all the memory slots, I.e 4x 8GB DDR 4. Or with double clocking and CAS doesn't it matter? If you can let me know, I would appreciate it.

I would like to know the reasons for the picks, particularly budget where there are many options from known brands for similar amounts. Why "Silicon Power" and not "Corsair" or "G.Skill" for the $50-55 range?

Hi, great video, one question: I have a b550 with 4 DIMM slots, I've installed 2×8 gig sticks, 3200 CL 16, I'm thinking about adding two more but I'm worried about compatibility issues, what do you suggest? Am I gonna be safe If I get RAM sticks with the same specs (different brand)?

Yeap, And 32GB overall feels more snappy when moving though tabs which recently i had 16GB and it was nice but as well when i had a few tabs open i was reaching all the way down to 900mb left of ram in games. For me as i muti task alot and run VMs, 32GB was the best option and people even said "Oh but you wont see a difference its not worth it" Yea right there's a difference for sure

Last upgrade I performed for RAM, was swapping out my 2400mhz Aegis ram 32gb 2x 16gb kit xmp profile set to 2700 or 2800 (i forget) for ripjaws 4x8gb = 32gb @3600mhz low latency ram. I ended up getting them used for 134 dollars which at the time was a steal. looks good having all the slots filled, and it has been a solid performer. I haven't clocked it higher in the xmp, I just saw no need for it. I may later at some point when I get a upgrade on the cooler for my 6700k for higher OC. as for the silicon powr kits you showed, i've tried a 3600 mhz kit 32gb 2 x 16gb sticks that were supposed to support XMP. My system did not like that at all. if anyone here is running MSI z170, you might want to rethink that as an upgrade. I am not sure if it was the board or my ram, I tested the sticks in all slots by themselves and the only way they worked for me was with xmp off. i didn't pay to run 3600mhz ram at base speed. I am not crapping on the company btw. I love silicon power. i'll go to them again and again for SSDs without any reservations. I've only had one bad drive and they took care of me with no issues. and maybe they would have done that with the ram, but i went through AMAZON, and it was easier just to get refunded and move on. ended up with the rip jaws and have been happy ever since. I would like to build a new system, but i see no need to do so, so I am just going to drive this heap till it fails.

Hi Jason have been watching your videos non stop. Im a first time builder, and was almost finished everything with your channel in the background. I overheard you talk about the gigabyte 750w psu, and looked at the one i was literally finishing up cable management on and realised i have the explodey one. Oops. Problem is that the reviews on it that i saw before i bought were pretty good. Thanks Jason! Upgrading to one from the a tier list. Is there enough other bad/dangerous components getting around that you could make a video to warn others like me? It was literally a total coincidence that i had your videos on auto play and an ep of boost my build was on with that same psu!

I just want Ram, NVMe and SSD that won’t bankrupt me and won’t die after a year which is what almost every PC builder channels on KZbin never seem to understand by using cheap parts but never read the comments on Newegg that these cheap brands die after 6-12 months.

I just built an I7 12700k, Msi 3080 trio x, 32gb DDR5 5200 Kingston fury, 4x WD sn850 2tb drives and a Gigabyte Aorus pro mb.. runs sweet, I probably have more than I need and threw more money than necessary but the ability to multi task and minimize games with no problems with memory or cpu was worth it..I'll probably hold out for another generation or 2 before upgrading the gpu because the power consumption and heat is concerning. I suspect they will have to address that issue eventually as it's possible the EU might go after the industry considering it needs energy efficiency, not to mention consumer backlash.. needing 12 fans and needing to ac my room because it's a heater will become ridiculous, I use an aio but paying out the nose for a custom water cooling system is not in my future
