I loved this video and your tips! The make up industry can be sickening. If we try to keep up, it just makes us BROKE and overwhelmed. I agree about the Chaos factor in having too much make up too and that is why I had to slow down. I felt so anxious each time I would try to find more space for another new palette, but then I would watch youtube later that day and see more make up I wanted to buy! So, this video comes at time with desperate need!

Very good tips. For limited edition items or new releases, I would say wait at least too weeks to a month. The only ones that perhaps think only for 24 hrs might be when is a product from a really small indi brand. I have gotte to purchase limited edition items a year later, so, whats the rush?

I like to jump on Temptalia to look how close a dupe is to a product already in my collection. I also like to switch up my products every few weeks to still feel excited about something I haven't used in a couple of months 😊

Personally I almost never buy full price products. I wait until they go on sale, like ABH palettes, I purchased my Modern Renaissance and Sultry when they were 40% off. I also use my credit card points to get discounted Sephora/ULTA gift cards(mostly 10% off) and wait until the sale(another 20% off) to make a purchase. For higher end products, I always wait until there is a 200-50 sale at Neiman's. I always wait until something has the lowest price... If it's gone or it's limited quantity, I just let it go, there will always be new & better things in the future. BTW, I also love to organize my collection :)

Imagine you’re over 50 and facing throwing out 20 year+ Chanel eyeshadow palettes. That has helped when making new purchases now, the age factor eventually hit me and my carefully collected makeup. It doesn’t last forever.

There are so many different categories in make up (eyeshadow, foundation, concealer, primer, lipstick, liner, etc.) that if someone even had 4-5 of each, which isn't excessive, it would be very easy to forget what you had. That could easily be 40-60 separate items. So having an inventory of everything would help someone be aware of what they have, what they need, what they don't use, need to repurchase, etc. So you really shouldn't be judgemental about it. Just because you disagree, doesn't mean someone else is wrong🤷🏻‍♀️

Nope,not at all I for one can attest to that for one thing makeup expires like anything else so I am not putting something on my face that isn't good and if I don't check how will I know,also that's how you know if you're running low on something and can help you see what products you're actually using and what is just collecting dust so you can spend money more wisely and lastly if you don't know what you have you could end up buying duplicates and really similar products 🤷‍♀️

I stopped buying those contour kits, bronzer palettes, blush palettes...etc. All the colours will not work for my skin, ever lol so I may as well buy the single of a shade. Yes it may cost more or you only get one shade vs. 6 for the same price but I’d rather have one that I love then one I love out of a palette of 6.

Great video! I find that something that helps determine how strong the “want” is for me for a product is that when shopping around online I place the item in my cart and then leave it. If I am still thinking about it and want it in a day or two then I actually complete the purchase. Often I have moved on and the want has passed!

Love these tips! Thanks so much for sharing! My tip is to remember that just because you don't have a color in your collection, that doesn't mean you NEED it. I used to buy every color of everything because I felt like I wanted a completed set or collection...but I wasn't wearing half the colors of lipstick or they looked awful on me. Now I only buy what I like and know looks good on me.

To me what works best is to have a budget. Come up with an amount that feels comfortable and stick to it. That way, you can only buy so many things and you end up buying what you truly need. X

I have a really bad relationship with bronzers and eyeshadow palettes, idk why 😂. I have 117 eyeshadow palettes and is ridiculous to have this amount for personal use, this is why I am in a no buy year plus more than 40 bronzers singles this is not counting the face palette i have with bronzers. I love this type of videos it helps you realize how much product you actually have. Plus using up an entire bronzer or palette takes a long time and you need to think about expiration date. Mind you I still use expire product if they perform well specially if is for my personal use. 💕💕💕

Joandra Maceda I too have over 100 eyeshadow palettes, plus face palettes & bronzers, and just at a quick glance I've counted 43 eyeshadow palettes that haven't even been unboxed much less used, not including other makeup products that remain untouched. I didn't think it was a problem, not until I tried a project pan myself, not just watching on KZbin. I found out just how long it takes to use up 1 item, now instead of enjoying all my makeup I feel overwhelmed when I walk into my beauty room, don't get me wrong, I still love makeup but I fell anxiety realizing I'm never going to hit pan on all of this, and I've given away a lot to family and friends.

Hi ☺ So I'm on a no buy for most of the year excluding spring releases, because my birthday is in March and I love the kind of makeup that comes out right around now. I started in November and really haven't bought anything til this month and what helped me the most was not checking for new releases all the time. I think staying away from social media until you get over the cycle of wanting and getting is very effective. Now I can look at any vid or promo pic and not feel the need to go crazy.

Your organization is so cool and pretty 🥰 I live in brazil and we dont have access to all the brands, so it helps in not buying make up haha but even when I travel - that only happend twice... yet - I do stop and think "do I really need this? Am I really gonna use this?" It helps me a lot, makes me feel sorry for the money I would be spending and for the make up that was going to be fogotten in my things. I think I am a really racional shopper, haha i'm proud of my hauls. Also, I think limiteds editions are coming to an end. This is really annoying the consumers, also heard this from Mel Thompson and others brazilian influencers, there is gonna be a time when no one is gonna care about this anymore.

Excellent tips! Especially the 'limited edition' trap -- The 24 hour rule really helps here if: A) You have similar items B) The colors/textures etc. are not the norm you gravitate towards C) You are on the fence for ANY reason, including spending the coins you might not really have to spend.

I made a makeup inventory, and every time I feel tempted, I open it up to see what I already own. It REALLY helps. I'll look at my inventory and realize wow I haven't even opened 3 eyeshadow palettes yet. (I color code which ones are new/unopened and which are put away in my closet as opposed to on my bathroom counter)

Yes, keep making these! I’ll be bookmarking this to watch regularly because my makeup buying is becoming obsessive! I’ve had to skip magazines, unsubscribe from makeup retailer/brand emails and skip youtube channels of anyone who doesn’t share the same makeup aesthetic as me. (Like you said, if someone who loves full glam on the daily raves about something, that’s doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll work for me.) I’ve also found it helpful to add a pic of anything I purchase to a Pinterest board. Sometimes looking through it gives me inspiration to use what I have, but it also reminds me how ludicrous my collection becomes if unchecked! xo

Thanks for the video, great advice. Two things I’ve found help are 1. What Hannah Louise Poston calling ‘duping the vibes’. I was fascinated by the Urban Decay GOT palette until I checked my collection and realised that I have something similar for every colour and I can create that gold and purple look right now if I want to. 2. Learning the formula’s you like. I’ve realised there are eyeshadow formulas I love and others I can’t stand so why buy a new palette that’s just going to annoy me?

I have found the visualizing how to use the products helpful with my low buy this year! I use neutral mattes on the daily, so many of the colourful palettes that catch my eye just aren’t logical for me to purchase. Another thing that has helped me this year has been setting boundaries for purchase of things that I need to use up (ex. No primers, foundation, or lip gloss until I use up a certain number). It’s helped curb the need to buy all the new releases lol!!!

In the past I got sucked in by the limited edition trap. Now If it says limited edition I try to avoid it because I know if I end up loving that item and want repurchase I can't. When I find items I love I want to be able to repurchase them.I'm not a fan of being a guinea pig and testing everything . I want to stick with the items that work .

Love this video idea! Thanks for sharing. I have to declutter every 3-6 months because I buy too much that I don’t use!! My collection is pretty much all stuff I LOVE now, so when I’m considering a new palette, I ask myself, “Will I like it as much or more than ABH Self Made? (Or whatever favorite palette I want to compare). If you’re getting a new palette, you’ll have less time to use that old palette you love. That helps me anyway!

I enjoyed this video! I already did all these things and didn't know it. For visualizing the product, I only purchase palettes I will use at least 75% of. And I have never paid attention to the trends. Back when matte liquid lipsticks were a thing I stayed strong with my bullet lipsticks with a cream formula. I didn't care if it was "trending", if I couldn't stand it on my lips more than 5 minutes, it was OUT! I'd love to see another one of these, thanks!

I enjoyed this video and would like more of this type of content. Hauls are fun, too, but we also need some realism. :) my best tips are actually sitting down and looking at my products. Seeing SO many blushes makes me not want more. For eye shadow palettes, I make myself point out which colors I would actually use and then realize it’s the same neutral shades I use in all my other palettes so I don’t need it!

Dear Jena, thank you for your video, I think your tips are very useful and I'll try to follow them. I've bought too much make up in 2018 and I already have a large collection. My tip is, if you want new Anastasia palette and you have three palettes from this brand already, just take the ones you have and use them and you will see that you don't really need another one.

I've made a spreadsheet for all of the eyeshadow palettes I own, how much I spent, how much their retail value is, price per shade, price per gram, colour story and how many times I've used them so I can track what I love. For lip products I have a running list so I don't end up getting a shade of some other brand of something I already own. I also use the vanity on temptalia so I can check for dupes first

Welcome to the “club”. 😉 something my no buy has done is made it really exciting to buy a gift for a fellow makeup lover. I don’t spend as much but it’s wonderful. My no buy is mostly because I want to visit friends of mine who live in Mexico and we want to finish our basement. So I have other goals. Great tips. Another thing I do is try to save up most of my purchases for sale times. I try to only buy things I need in the interim (i.e. things I've run out of) and then buy the rest during Sephora sales, Ulta 20% sales, and brand website sales. I use the loves list feature on Sephora's site to keep track of items I'm interested in. I don't have an inventory for every product I have but I sent myself an email listing all the MAC eyeshadows I have and all the makeup brushes I have since those tend to be the items I can't really remember. I can easily pull the email up on my phone when I'm shopping just to make sure I don't purchase something I already own.

Fantastic advise. I am a lipstick collector. I have an Excel spreadsheet that list the lipstick brand, the color, and the description. It is a lifesaver. I love this video. I am on a Low Buy/No Buy this year and have downsized quite a bit over the last year and a half. I have become a selective buyer/consumer for the same exact reasons you mentioned. Being a Sephora Rouge member does not mean I have tons of makeup or buy a ton in a year. I really just buy carefully, and more often than not, they are mostly on the higher end of things and I also buy skincare and presents for friends, so not all of them are mine. In theory, you can buy only 13 items a year from Sephora and still spend $1K depending on what they are. I used to have a full Alex Drawer of just blushes and highlighters but half of them are the same shades since I gravitate to almost the same ones. I’d have a drugstore and a few high ends and in reality, I really only use maybe two of the similar shades and were mostly high end. It’s not so much how you much one spends, for me, it’s how much I actually use vs what goes to waste. I do not like being wasteful.

Right now I’m balancing with picking up new products that interest me that I also know interest you guys, but also consistently rotate the items I use in my collection. I'm on a low buy this year. I've bought so much in the last 2 years that I couldn't fit it away. So I did a major declutter, was so ruthless limiting myself to just 5 bronzers/highlighters etc. if it doesn't make me happy, isn't holy grail or my normal style I won't use it much. I got so caught in the limited edition trap & FOMO - Charlotte Tilbury hello. Needless to say my mum & sister were pleased. And I've cutback in the number of channels I watch now to people I trust (mainly you, Mel Thompson & Morgan) which helps. Loved this video idea.

I'm currently eyeing jeffrree star blue blood palette but I have so much eyeshadow already that I do know I have atleast 15 similar shades. I also feel that the problem is I'm not as good with creating looks. So I'm always buying because gurus from KZbin use a new product all the time instead of creating multiple looks with the same thing. I wish not to be fooled now !

I also want to see a comeback in the trend of single eyeshadows - picking colours that really appeal and not so many palettes that repeat the same theme or just buying for the sake of 2-3 colours. Palettes are supposed to be good value but we end up just collecting. I'm also really contemplating following more KZbinrs like Sam (the Canadian?) who do unusual content and tutorials/educational are now unusual rather than the norm. We will always need reviews but I find watching too many channels on this just sucks me into a buying frenzy.

This is a really useful video. I really want to do an inventory on my eyeshadow palettes - I often get sucked into buying another palette because it has pretty colours that I'm convinced I don't already own and then find that actually I already do - or very similar to it. I bought the Riviera palette the other day and realised I already have most of the colours. I think if I have the inventory with pictures of what I already have it'll hopefully make me think twice before purchasing. I'm on a no buy with lipsticks/ lipglosses. I did a swatch test of them all and discovered I have a liking for particular shades and have twenty variants of them. I don't need any more.

When I started my makeup collection a few years ago it was hard to discern what I’d use and need and what, all these years later, would be sitting in my drawers untouched. I now have so many eyeshadow palettes I don’t think I could ever need another palette again! But that’s okay it helps me now that I’ve collected so much makeup because now I know what I actually like and it’s stopped me from purchasing a lottt of products this year.

I am barely getting into makeup an so my collection is not really a collection, haha! But I do want to branch out just a tad an see what else is out there. I think your strategies are helpful regardless because we all fall into the hype of things and sometimes the hype is just hype. I do believe in doubling up on products you use daily, such as brow and foundation products, but no matter the size of your collection it's a good idea to be conscious of what you purchase. I am currently going through and hand writting an inventory for my collection for many reasons. 1 because i have a good bit of makeup. 2handwritting because i am decluttering as I go so i dont have to write it all down and also for future purchases or when i want to use specifically!! i love colorful shadows so needless to say my eyeshadow is the Hugest portion!! Ulta's 21 days of beauty hasnt made this easy but i dont have myself on a low buy or no buy. but I do want to pick up a few items from sale because I need to restock on an item and also want an item for my son *skin care for acne* so cant do the whole wait 24 hours thing so much...but your tips are amazing and i have these saved on 3 lists so i can rewatch these to help curb my spending on make up...

I'm a sucker for packaging. I purchased the high tides good vibes palette . Very pretty palette. At first I hated the glitter shades even though the colors were beautiful.I've never used glitter glue so its going to be new territory for me since I decided to keep it.
